DHASG Secret Santa Challenge 2012

Duration: December 1st-January 31, 2012

Signup period: November 1st-November 22, 2012

Description: Christmastime is on its way, and all of us good little readers want some nice gifts from the Book Santa. In this challenge, Santa will hook you up with some nice goodies in time for Christmas morning.

Who can participate?: Any DHASG member, old or new. You do not have celebrate Christmas in a religious sense to participate.

How this will work: November 1-November 22nd, members can sign up to participate. Unfortunately, the cutoff for the challenge signup will be November 22nd so I can have time to send out the PMs with assignments. I will assign each participant their own Secret Santa, and I will notify everyone by private message who your recipient will be.

December 15-January 31, 2012 is when the thread will be open to discuss your thoughts on your gifts from your Secret Santa.

What do you need to do?

1. Sign up for the challenge by November 22nd.

2. Post a short “letter to Santa” describing your likes and dislikes on the thread.

3. When you get your PM from the challenge coordinator with your gift recipient (as their Secret Santa), take a look at their wish list/letter and choose a maximum of 3 books and a minimum of 2 books based on their likes and dislikes. Of course, you want to try to pick something you think they might like. You may also take a look at their profile, so long as it is not private.

4. Participants should make sure they are getting books they want to read. That’s up to you. If you are participating and you keep your profile private, make sure your letter/wish list is descriptive enough to give your Santa something to work with. You can list any of your likes or dislikes regardless of genre. They do not have to be dangerous heroes or even romance. Participants are asked to please pick and read at least one of your books. If you don’t like it, that’s fine to be honest. Just be gracious about it to your Secret Santa. You may use free books, owned books, or library checkout books. You do not have to buy books especially for this challenge. If you are worried about the expense, you can even list books you will have a better chance of getting in time for the challenge in your 'letter to Santa' (including books you already own). Since we always tell Santa what we want and not what we’ll settle for in real life, don’t be shy about being clear so that’s not an issue.

5. The challenge coordinator will get your Secret Santa assignments out to you by December 1st at the latest. I will tell you who your assigned participant is via PM. Send your selections for your Secret Santa to me by December 7th at the latest. If you have your profile set not to receive messages, it is important you allow messages for at least the first three weeks of December so you can participate in this challenge. I will get the Secret Santa selections out to members by December 20th at the latest.

6. When you have read your books, list your stats as completed. You should have posted your final update by January 31st. At the minimum, tell us if you liked the book or not and what you rated it. If you would like to write a review, feel free to post it in your final post or with a link to your review on Goodreads. On February 1st, I will reveal who everyone’s Secret Santa is.

7. Secret Santas, do not post any of your selections on the group or who your recipient is. This will all be done via PM! The only things that will be posted on the thread are your initial signup for participating and your letter to Santa, general comments and questions about the challenge, and final stats for participants. The reveal will occur on February 1st, 2013.

8. The goal is to have fun and to help celebrate the Christmas holiday (in any sense you choose) season with book love. Books are the gift that keep on giving.

9. Any questions? Feel free to ask on this thread.

Important Dates:

• Challenge Sign-up: November 1-November 22nd, 2012
• Secret Santa Assignments given via PM: November 22nd-December 1st, 2012
• Deadline to turn in Secret Santa selections: December 7th, 2012
• Secret Santa selections sent to participants: December 8th-December 20th, 2012
• Comment period on Secret Santa ‘gifts’: December 15th-January 31st, 2013
• Reveal on Secret Santa assignments: February 1, 2013

I hope you participate in the challenge. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it!

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 511 comments Okay here it goes...
I am normal a Paranormal Romance or Urban fantasy reader. Although I do occasionally branch out and read historical romance as well. It is a RARE occasion that I read contemporary romance. I like to escape into my books and I just can't seem to do that with contemporary romance.

I love a strong alpha male type character. A sarcastic sense of humor is a plus. I can not stand whining or moping about. So, although I enjoy a tortured hero I don't like it when he is all "poor me" about it.

I like a lot of action as well as romance in the books that I read. I get bored with books that are only about the relationship between the hero and the heroine. There needs to be some sort of outside force that they are fighting against.

Some of my favorite authors include: Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Cherise Sinclair.

Thanks for the suggestion. Part of the fun will be seeing people's Letters to Santa on the thread, so I think we will keep it all on Goodreads.

Bror (Abrar) (ab2y) | 3 comments Fun ,i'm in !

I like almost everything but i prefer paranormal romance , romance in general , M/M romance , young adult fiction and happy endings . I am very open to new genres and suggestions .
I don't like very short/long books (less than 100 , more than 500). Sad , predictable , bad and open endings and yes i hate boring books too .
I'll read anything , i can make time for a book and i love to buy books , any book in my TBR or not is ok with me unless i can't find it in my country or it's not available by amazon or any ebook store to my country .
Thanks :)
❄ Merry Christmas ❄

*Your dislikes
*Books that you really want to read before January 31st.
*Books that you plan on buying in time to read before January 31st.
*Books that you own and want to read
*Books available at your library
*You do not need to ask for a book that you will have to buy for this challenge, unless you want to.

message 18: by ~Melissa~ (last edited Nov 21, 2012 11:42AM) (new)

~Melissa~ I want to play!!

I like romance, PNR,UF, YA, mysteries and suspense thrillers. Historical and historical romances I usually don't really get into. I'm open to new genres and suggestions. I personally don't need alot of background description of the setting etc ~ I tend to skip over it to get back to the action of the book, lol. Unless it is the first in a series for world building then I tend to pay a little more attention. Also this year I have already read several long books (started Game of Thrones series) so if you could suggest a normal length book (250-400ish) would be great!! I have shelves labeled book own ~ nook own for what I have readily available. I'm not opposed to buying a new book as long as it is out in paperback as I don't buy hardback books and I rarely pay more than $10 for an ebook. I have a wonderful library system that I borrow from as well ~ the newer titles are sometimes hard to get a hold of if they are popular.
Thanks!

The signup deadline has passed for the Secret Santa. I will be pairing up participants in the next week or two, so expect a private message with your assigned group member.

Please write your Letter to Santa and post it here as soon as you can so your Secret Santa will know what kind of books you want for Christmas!

message 20: by Ren Puspita (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) Sorry Lady D, I forgot to write the Letter to Santa. This is mine :

Dear Santa.
My name is Ren. Thanks for being my Santa anyway, lol! I am avid romance reader, and I love to read Paranormal Romance, Romantic Suspense Romance and lately Urban Fantasy. What I dislike of my book are if there's force seduction like in those bodice-ripper so if you want to give me historical romance book, I prefer its have paranormal element of it :). Oh, and I'm now not into innocent girl-domination billionaire books too. Just don't like it.

I really want to read Tangle of Need by Nalini Singh, simply because she is my one of autobuy author and Full Blooded by Amanda Carlson since I read so many great reviews about her book. Plan to buy those two books too. As for book I own, I have shelf "own" in my bookshelves. You might want to check it *giggles*. Don't have any library here in Indonesia, my country :(. I really hope they provide English books so I can borrow it.

Thanks for reading this letter, dear Santa!

message 21: by chillygarlic (new)

chillygarlic Dear Santa,

I read all types of books but my favourite is Historical romance. Doesn't matter that the hero is a commoner or not. I m open to any suggestions and new genres. I donot like short books, whining (specially from the main characters). and no 50 Shades of grey or anything related to that.

Favourite authors:Elizabeth Hoyt, Judith Mcnaught, Cherise Sinclair, Lisa Kleypas, Syrie James.

Thankyou Santa!!!

message 22: by PepperP0t (new)

PepperP0t Sorry, I forgot my letter to Santa

Dear Santa,

its me, Pat. My favorites are Paranormal Romance and UF but would like something in one of those or in romantic suspense genre or even erotica. (but nothing with zombies cuz they still freak me out.) Mostly I read books that have between 200 & 400pages and thats fine, I don't do well with anthologies. I love getting new authors so that would be ok too. Since I'm getting to be such a big girl I don't mind if you regift from my to read shelf, as long as its got a purple bow. and I get a glass of wine to go with it.

Pet all the reindeer for me and I saved all my yucky chocolate this year so you got a bunch to eat. Oh, and I'll remember to make sure the fireplace isn't lit this time. and don't forget to take the reindeer their snacks this time.

Bye

From Pat

message 23: by Arielka (new)

Arielka (readalover) | 10 comments Dear Santa,

I'd been a good good girl this year... Really! I have... Well, whatever. I just wanted to write this letter to you, so you can get it right this year (I hated the socks you gave me last year... There were blue and you know I'm a pink girl!!) ;) ;P

Well... Back to the letter. I love romance (paranormal, historical, suspense, UF...). I just love a good romance, it doesn't matter much what kind. But to be more specific I really will like something with erotica in it or a little suspense. I love bad sexy hot guys but if you want to send me something with a good sexy guy... I don't mind. An even though I'm a Spanish speaker, I prefer books in English.

Long books, I love. Short books, I hate. I just want a book that suck me in from the beginning. Last but not least, I love HEA endings. It doesn't mean the book can't have sad and emotional parts in it (I love drama) but I prefer a book that leave me with a smile on my face.

Ohhh... Lately I'd been not too happy with love-triangles (so I you can... Please don't sent me one).

Xoxo,
Akleira

Ps. My profile is gonna be public for you to go check out what I have in my books shelves :)

message 24: by Renee (new)

Renee Nicole | 30 comments Sorry, Lady Danielle! Totally forgot about this one. Here is my letter to Santa:

Dear Santa,

I've been such a nice girl this year, that I'd love for my presents to be a little naughty. Sexy bad boys of the PNR/UF persuasion are always welcome! Contemporary heroes are fun, too (as long as they, too, can get a little naughty). But please don't leave me a Historical man. I have a hard time handling them. Also, Tear-Jerkers - stay back! Christmas is a joyous time, and I don't want to be a cry-baby. But I'm not too picky. If Santa likes him, or thinks he would be good for me, then I will trust his her opinion!!

Love Renee

message 25: by Laura (new)

Laura Sorry, Lady Danielle, forgot about this too!

Dear Santa, I have read a lot of books this year and I'm looking forward to the one you pick for me at xmas. I love all sorts of romance books but mainly historical and paranormal romance. I'm not a big fan of UF. Getting totally sick of Sookie. I'm about ready to start Rogue Rider and I've got the newest gena showalter and kresley cole on pre-order. I'm willing to try something new but as you probably already know I live in Ireland, so there may be books I won't be able to get. Although if it on kindle from amazon.com it should be fine.

Please Santa, although I will keep an open mind about which ever book you pick, I really hate books that are too descriptive. I'd rather read about the actions leading up to the HEA.

Thank you so much,
Love
Laura

Hope I'm not too late to be included on the good girls list! I thought you should know that I am in love with reading about other people falling in love! I'm a hopeless romantic, and love an alpha male! Please feel free to check out my bookshelves - my profile is viewable to all goodread members!

Historical romances do not float my boat!

thanking you in advance! ho ho ho x

I really want to thank everyone who signed up and apologize for any glitches. This is our first official Secret Santa challenge, so you are all guinea pigs.

By now, most of you should have received assignments. If you didn't, it's because you have your account set not to receive messages. Please check and post if you have changed that. I will get your assignment out to you by Tuesday or Wednesday in that case.

Thanks again!

Just a reminder that when you receive your assigned member whom you will be the Secret Santa for, send me your recommendations for that person. Do not send them to that person or post them here.

Also, I have participants who are not able to make selections for their assigned member because the member's profile is set on private and the member has not posted their Santa Letters. Doing the above will facilitate your receiving your gifts (aka recommendations) for the challenge.

message 32: by Lacy (last edited Dec 03, 2012 11:42PM) (new)

Lacy (lacylaces) | 28 comments Dear Santa,

Sorry to be so late getting this out to you. Hopefully it's not too late!

I love really emotional romances where the connection between the characters is deep, intimate, sexy, and sweet, that I cannot put down with suspense and/or paranormal elements. I love YA/teen romances, paranormal romances, and romantic suspense.

I must have a HEA! I love dangerous heroes who fall totally in love with the heroine and pursue her. I don't mind if the road is rocky to romance if it's resolved in a believable HEA way.

I am really into Fallen Angels right now. But I also love vampire hunter, warrior heroes/brotherhoods, etc., psychic powers, other special abilities and powers. I like humor but nothing too fluffy or chic lit.

While I do like emotionally intense reads, I don't like serial killer/murders etc. I do NOT like Women's Fiction at all.

Lacy

Renee Nicole | 30 comments Cool! So, what's everyone reading??

I got Goddess of Spring (Goddess Summoning, #2) by P.C. Cast and The Darkest Kiss (Lords of the Underworld, #2) by Gena Showalter . Overdrive has The Darkest Kiss, so I'm definitely gonna read that one. Goddess of Spring looks good, too but I haven't read the first in the series. Hmmm...

I decided to read Fated and Divergent. I may read the other two if time permits but I am really enjoying these two so far.

message 42: by PepperP0t (new)

PepperP0t From my picks I selected Finding the Lost (Sentinel Wars, #2) by Shannon K. Butcher , #2 in the Sentinal Wars series, I really enjoy that world. I also plan to read Bodyguard by Suzanne Brockmann before the new year.

Jessica how did you like Fated (Dark Protectors #1) by Rebecca Zanetti ? I have that series and haven't found time to read it...should I move it up on my tbr?

Pat ~ I know can't wait to get back in to the series. Holding off since I signed up for the series challenge in TCF group. I'm going to be reading Finding the Lost soon. It's on my nightstand...two more to finish before I can start it.....I really liked the first book in that series.

I really liked it. The hero, Talen, was a little over baring because he was an extreme Alpha but I like that. :) So, as long as that doesn't bother you I think you will like it. I loved the heroine, Cara, and that is saying a lot since I am really harsh on the females in most stories I read. It was full of action and adventure which is the way I like it. I would recommend it.

I definitely want to check that one out because I have heard such good things about it but I worry that I won't like it do to the psychic aspects of the story. I have never been a huge fan of that but I am willing to give it a try since everyone is raving about it. Not sure if I will be able to get to it before the challenge is over though.....hmmm
