I tried that last year and did fairly well - did around 10. This year I'm already two books behind!! But...life happens, as we all know. And, I've been busy with crafts for our church fair, so that's a good reason, I'm thinkin'... :)

Melinda | 35 comments My goal for 2009 is to make it a habit to read five books that I already own for every one book that I buy.

message 53: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow Brittany 42 books in one month. Amazing. I would love to try it but will have to wait for retirement!

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

Lisa 500 books in a year that is super amazing!

Mindy, if I were to do that... well, I think that this year alone I would need to read somewhere around 500 books... I should start reading more of what I have. Good luck with that! Admirable (sp?) goal!!!

message 56: by Dee (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 16 comments My goal for 2009 is to finish the Harry Potter series...It took me FOREVER to get through the first four books.

Worst thing is that book 5 is an additional hundred pages over book 4, and now it is in 11.5 font instead of 12 points. Ye Gads...I hate that I read so slow :]

Elizabeth (Alaska) Dee wrote: "Ye Gads...I hate that I read so slow :] "

Maybe you're enjoying it more!

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 16 comments Hey Elizabeth,

Oh, that I am. I have a bad habit of reading each and every word, and then pondering over the meaning of each and every word (I blame my University Lit. Prof.).

I am pathetic ;]

message 59: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments I thought I had posted here a few months back but I must have imagined it! Last year I did the 50 book a year challenge here on goodreads and I made it to 80 books. I'd like to surpass that number this year but I think it's doubtful since I'll have a new baby in September. When I had my son it took me 3 months to get through my first post baby book and that was Dinner with a Perfect Stranger which was barely 100 pages!

Given all that my goal is this-to make it to 50 books by the time I have the baby in September and then to read at least 3 books while I'm on maternity leave. I really think I'll be able to read more than 3 but I'm starting with a managable goal and I'll go from there.

I am a super slow reader too! Sometimes, when I feel like I might have skipped a word, I have to go back and re-read the paragraph. It is more then a little frustrating... but I HAVE to! Good luck. Book 5 was my least favorite, but books 6 and 7 pick up!

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow Stacey... under the circumstances a book a month sounds like a huge challenge!! good luck. (and congratulations on you 6 kids!)

message 62: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments had a thought this morning. For years I am buying books that aren't on my many lsits. I am continuing with adding books to the lists....so I keep reading books, keep adding books, but my lists don't get shorter or stay at the same amount. And I have books on there that I want to read at least for five years or more. So for now I am going to continue like I was doing, will try to do very good for the challenge but after...I might try to read in order of how I put them on my list in my notebook and see what matches in the summer challenge. I know it won't be easy but I really feel like doing that. maybe then I will also finally read the first book I wrote in it: mists of avalon...

Roseann | 400 comments I feel computer illiterate right now (and I'm not), but how do I start my own reading goal thread? I went to the group's home page, but did not see anthing to add a new title(maybe I'm going blind from all the Spring Challenge reading). Please help, someone!!

Lydia (loverofinformation) After 5 months, I have kept to my original monthly reading goal, exceeding it at times. But now I face that wonderful task of moving and finding another job, so I'm glad I'm a bit ahead! LOL

message 69: by Kate (new)

Kate Quinn My goal is just to find another writer who I love. This is difficult, because I'm picky about fiction and there's just so much crap out there nowadays. I pick up 5 books and end up throwing 4 aside - but if I can find that fifth one from a writer I don't know, I feel like I've found El Dorado. My goal every year is to find a new writer who I love, hopefully one who's written a lot of books. On a good year, I found Robert Harris (5-6 books). On a REALLY great year I found Bernard Cornwell (40+ books). Here's hoping!

Kate, I had a look at your Bookshelves and, other than Bernard Cornwell, don't recognize the authors. Therefore, some of the following may not be to your taste. However, have you tried reading these authors?:

Jack Whyte Camulod series (starting with The Skystone)

Bryce Courtenay

Terry Goodkind Sword Of Truth series (starting with

Wizard's First Rule)

Barbara Kingsolver

Just hoping to help you find a new author.

Hmm ... I have read some Barbara Kingsolver and liked her very much (my bookshelves are still incomplete, since I joined recently). I read one Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth book back in high school but didn't pick it up later - maybe it's time I did.

Thanks for the suggestions!

What a great goal. Have you read John Irving, Monica Dickens (grand daughter of Charles), or Mark Childress - just a few of my favourites.

message 74: by Kate (new)

Kate Quinn I think I've read some Irving, but I can't remember what. Dickens, Childress - I'll look them up!

Petra Kate wrote: "I think I've read some Irving, but I can't remember what. Dickens, Childress - I'll look them up!"

Kate, one of my favorite books (and one I always recommend) is John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany.

message 76: by Kate (new)

Kate Quinn THAT'S the Irving that I read. "A Prayer For Owen Meany" is one of my favorites - the character is unforgettable.

message 77: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments Have you read John Irving's A Widow for One Year??? Though I haven't read it yet, I recently discovered that I have two copies of this book, if anyone needs one.

message 78: by Kate (new)

Kate Quinn I haven't read it, but I'll look it up.

message 79: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) A Widow for One Year is my favorite John Irving book. (the first part was made into a movie a few years back starring Jeff Bridges; it was called The Door in the Floor; disappoining, I thought).

I've had A Prayer for Owen Meaning for a million years on my to reads......

message 80: by Brenda (new)

message 81: by Jen (last edited May 22, 2009 12:02AM) (new)

Jen (oshngirl) | 34 comments I would just like to say at the beginning of the year my goal was 25 books by the end of it. Just over 2 a month, not toooooo stressful with plenty of time for kid/house. I was feeling good about myself in Feb with 4 books done. Thanks to this group I have already hit 22 books read!! So now I'm shooting for 50 this year!

t took me a lot of time to get into The world according to garp and never liked the parts the mother told. I thought this would be one of the greatest stories or at least very very good but it made me feel so mixed....weird book.

message 84: by Kate (new)

Kate Quinn I liked "The World According To Garp" a lot, but it is a strange book. It was astoundingly funny in a lot of places.

message 87: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) I posted my 2009 Challenge in another group and will copy it to this group. It's 2 books a month, or 24 for the year, with half being from what I already have at home (that's more the challenge, don't you think?)

I hear you Diane.... Read what you got before you go get more, yeah? I can't stick to that... Im a sucker for buying books.

message 91: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 157 comments Thought that I had posted my goal, bout couldn't find it. So........my 2009 goal is to read all the books that I bought/mooched in 2008!! Like that's gonna happen, right? HEHE!! I did read 5-7 of the 2008 books so I'm getting there.

message 92: by Katie (new)

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 109 comments I'm doing my own ABC Challenge for 2009. My goal is to read books whose title starts with each letter of the alphabet. I have 2 separate lists for print and audio so it's actually 52 books for the year.

My friend and I also have a pact that we will not buy any books (unless they are for an author signing) until we make our annual trek to the big book sale next year. It's tough, but necessary considering I filled my entire trunk in April when we went to said sale and my shelves at home were already overflowing.

I always have that rule and somehow I wind up buying book or books several times a month. And then if that isn't bad enough I go to the library.

message 95: by Rita (new)

Rita I just posted 50 books to read in a year and realized that that list only included books I kept in my bedroom. I have a ton of books elsewhere so, that's my goal. Initially it was to read the ones in my room in the year, but now I want to surpass that. We'll see.

I'm sure I'll juggle that list about as well.

message 96: by Vicki (new)

Vicki My goal is the same as it has been for the past three years: to read (on average) one book per week for the entire year. Because I do a lot of traveling by car, I count audio books and I also count abridged/condensed books once I've actually hit my target.

Every year, for the past 3 years, I've exceeded my goal and I'm currently at 36 books so far for the year -- so I'm ahead of my game!

message 97: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments My goal this year is to read all the books sitting around on my shelves that I haven't read yet. The only problem is, for every book I read off that shelf, I buy 2 more to go on it. sigh.

The good news is, there are only about 30 books left.

message 98: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) My personal reading goal this year is 36 books. I have OCD concerning numbers. Last year my goal was 2x12 books (I read 30 books), and the year before my goal was 12 books. So this year I'm reading 3x12 books so only 4 books left. Shouldn't be a problem to accomplish :)
