Hey everyone out there. Name's Zach, I'm new here and I've got a question for the world out there.

The basic thing I've been going through is that I've started to highlight passages in my textbooks. I know that this is stupid, but I want your opinions.

Is it wrong when a well loved book you own has highlights in it? Is it destroying the book... or is it showing the reader's love for it??

Leave your comments on it all below. Be honest; be brutal; but be gentle too. No swearing. None at all.

Bye y'all. ;D

It depends on the reader really. I personally couldn't do it, it would kill me inside. But others think its a way of showing how much they cared for the book and the emotions the books brought out. It's perfectly fine if you annotate, a lot of people do. Just don't doggy ear, thats just crossing the line :P

I say "go for it". It's your book. If you love it and that's how you can best relate back to a certain part of it later then by all means, do it! A book is all about the story, not the paper on which they are written. I often dog ear pages so I can go back to them later, or on my Nook you can highlight without ruining the integrity of the book because you can erase it later. I guess I'm trying to say there shouldn't be a rule about this :)

If it's your own book, then there's nothing wrong with it.. it is after all your property to do with as you wish..

I love highlighting passages in books, it allows me to quickly look over favourites quotes etc.

As little-miss said though, don't doggy ear..thats bad :P ..though in the end..it's still depends on what YOU like to do with your books

I say books that are too "clean" are boring. I personally underline/highlight and write insights on my books. That way, when I read it again, I won't only be reading a story, I'll be transported to the moments I read the book. It makes the experience even more fulfilling. And, if you ever decide to give your book away, along with your highlights, you'll also be giving that person a little piece of yourself (which is also why I love buying second-hand books). :D

Think about it. :)

I highlight all the time. But I get all of my books from the library, so I always feel like by looking at my highlighted passages, someone is going to see the words in a new light and have their lives changed forever. I like to think that that will really happen. So basically, I completely agree with you on the highlighting.

I didn't highlight in this particular copy since I read it in one sitting and pretty much devoured. But previously I wrote in pencil in my copy of Lolita. I had read it as part of a book club. I made notes, thoughts, etc. It is now a very treasured copy.

I don't make a habit of writing in my books since I do the swaps/trades unless I plan on keeping them in my possession. I would want the reader to form their own ideas and not just read mine.
