Kim | 259 comments Discussion Questions for Chapters 6 - 10

11) Do you find Wade's obsessive dedication to the egg hunting commendable or sad?
I find it sad that he doesn't really have anyone or anything else in his live to spend his time on. I don't blame him for spending so much time on the contest, because he isn't neglecting anyone. I just think it's a sad way to have to live. I am hoping he can make a real connection with Art3mis in real life. :)

12) If gunters don't share anything related to the egg with each other, what do you think they talk about on message boards?
They probably spend a lot of time talking about the 80's and video games.

13) Okay, this one isn't a question - I just had to acknowledge that you can sign up for Quidditch as a school sport in OASIS. That is all.
Ha, Ha! That was pretty cool. :)

14) What did you make of Halliday's hiding place on Ludus? What does it say about him that he (appears to have) wanted a student to find the Copper Key?
I think he wants the prize to go to someone who really deserves it and someone who is an underdog. I think he would have been upset if he was still alive and a Sixer won the contest.

15) Did you expect things to play out the way they did in the Tomb of Horrors? The image of Wade playing Joust with Acererak was incredibly bizarre, which fits with Halliday's eccentric personality, I suppose.
I hadn't thought about what he was going to find a head of time, but I do think it fits with Halliday's personality.

16) Did you expect that someone else had found the Tomb first? Do you trust Art3mis? Now that she has a Copper Key of her own, do you think she and Wade be running into each other more often on their quest?
I didn't suspect anyone else had found the Tomb first, but I should have! Five years is a long time to go without anyone finding the tomb. I do trust Art3mis and I love her character! I bet they will be running into each other a lot and I bet they will eventually start working together.

17) What will things be like for Wade now? What will his relationship be like with Aech? Will he still attend school?
I think he is going to have a huge target on his back. I think he would stay in school if he could, but I don't know if that will be possible now. I think his relationship will be strained with Aech at first, but then hopefully they can get past being competitors.

18) What do you think is beyond the gate?
I think there will be some kind of test for Wade to pass. I really think Halliday wants someone worthy to win and I think the contest is designed to find that person. I think they will need more than just smarts and research to win the contest. Somehow their character will be tested.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Okay. Finally got to the library and got this in CD and hardcover. But, do you think I can find the time to get to it? Ha!

But, my storage bin is finally emptied. Yay! Good thing they couldn't pick it up on the due date, but gave me four extra days free!

And Thanksgiving is next week! Eeeeeep! Impossible.

Kaitlin (kait-k) | 455 comments 27) Is it possible that Sorrento's already gotten to someone in the "High Five," as Art3mis puts it? Or are the members too smart for that? I think it's definitely possible!

28) First impressions of Daito and Shoto? Were they what you expected? They were OK. I was surprised they showed up to the chat room.

29) What about the disturbance in the corner of the chat room? Did IOI break into it somehow? Or is something else going on? Maybe. I was hoping it was a good thing, like somebody's watching over them. That's probably too optimistic though.

30) It looks like things are headed to an all-out war between the Sixers and the gunters. Who do you think will reach the Jade Key first? I think one of the good guys HAS to win.

31) Were you surprised at how easy it was for Wade to create a new identity and set up a new home? Do you like his new place and new gear? Yeah! It was really easy. His new place is terrible! Who paints over a window? I did think his system for accepting packages was pretty cool.

32) What do you think of Wade's decision to stay inside until he finds the egg? What does it say about him that he avoids interaction with any human being whatsoever? I think he's upset about Art3mis and is just sort of depressed and figures nothing else matters.

33) What did you think of the chat between Art3mis and Wade? Why do you think Art3mis is so reluctant to reveal anything personal about herself? I think her reticence is smart. She doesn't know who he really is, and she should be suspicious of everyone. They're in a dangerous situation, and meeting anyone new in person is a bad idea.

34) Do you think Wade was too obvious about his feelings for her? Do you think Art3mis is manipulating him in any way? Or does she perhaps not trust him to care about the real her? Yeah, I was surprised he put it all out there. I think they both have low self-esteem, but that she's holding back more to be cautious.

35) What did you think of Ogden's dance party? Surprised the Sixers crashed it? And what about Og's lightning superpower? That was pretty neat. I was surprised that so many people came! Yeah, Ogden's superpower was pretty cool.

36) Book quote:"I was just another sad, lost, lonely soul, wasting his life on a glorified videogame." What do you think brought about this realization? Will this change anything to have admitted this to himself? I think on some level he knew that all along, but what else does he have to look forward to? I don't think it'll change anything.

37) Now that we are roughly halfway through the book, what is your overall opinion of it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs? I like it!

Yeah, I really like Community too! I think it's weird they didn't put the new season on the air this fall like they were originally going to and I'm hoping they'll air it eventually.

Kim | 259 comments 27) Is it possible that Sorrento's already gotten to someone in the "High Five," as Art3mis puts it? Or are the members too smart for that?

I hope they haven't, but I wouldn't be surprised though if the author had Aech secretly working with them to throw a twist in.

28) First impressions of Daito and Shoto? Were they what you expected?

I liked their characters and I wasn't really surprised by them.

29) What about the disturbance in the corner of the chat room? Did IOI break into it somehow? Or is something else going on?

I don't know who, but I think someone was spyng on them.

30) It looks like things are headed to an all-out war between the Sixers and the gunters. Who do you think will reach the Jade Key first?

I think the gunters will reach the Jade Key first and the Sixers will try to sabotage them.

31) Were you surprised at how easy it was for Wade to create a new identity and set up a new home? Do you like his new place and new gear?

It did seem like it was pretty easy for him. All of his new gear kind of creeped me out. That's no way to live!

32) What do you think of Wade's decision to stay inside until he finds the egg? What does it say about him that he avoids interaction with any human being whatsoever?

I think it's not good and he is losing his connection with reality more and more. At least when he was spending time with Art3mis, he wasn't so obsessed with the search. He secretly wanted to meet her in real life and form a real connection. Now, he is just sinking deeper into the virtual world.

33) What did you think of the chat between Art3mis and Wade? Why do you think Art3mis is so reluctant to reveal anything personal about herself?

I thought it was fun to read and they had a good connection. There is definitely something Art3mis wants to hide and is afraid to reveal to Wade.

34) Do you think Wade was too obvious about his feelings for her? Do you think Art3mis is manipulating him in any way? Or does she perhaps not trust him to care about the real her?

I think she has something to hide and is too scared to let herself care about Wade. At least I hope it's that and not that she is manipulating him. I don't think she is.

35) What did you think of Ogden's dance party? Surprised the Sixers crashed it? And what about Og's lightning superpower? That was pretty neat.

I thought the dance party was wierd!

36) Book quote:"I was just another sad, lost, lonely soul, wasting his life on a glorified videogame." What do you think brought about this realization? Will this change anything to have admitted this to himself?

Being able to recognize that you have a problem is the first step, so hopefully he can start making changes.

37) Now that we are roughly halfway through the book, what is your overall opinion of it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?

I am really liking it and excited to see what will happen next.

29. I didn't think about someone watching them for good reasons! I hope that's true too.

36. That's true. Wade doesn't really have anything to look forward too. He doesn't have anyone in real life. It would be tough, but even going outside and taking a walk once a day would be better than what he is doing now, LOL.

11) I agree. If he had a better family life, perhaps, or some good friends in real life, he might have ever wanted to dedicate his life to this. Who knows? I don't blame him either, and there are worse ways to spend your time, but it's sad nonetheless.

14) Love your answer. I definitely think Halliday wants an underdog to win.

16) Good point - five years is a while without someone finding the tomb. Love Art3mis, too!

18) Ooh, love what you said about character being tested. I could see that coming into play later and being a deciding factor as to who wins the egg.

27) Me too, but I'm a paranoid person by nature. :-D

28) Me too! I didn't think they would show. I wasn't surprised they left early when someone mentioned "alliance," either. They were younger than I imagined.

29) I hadn't thought of that. I'm more inclined to think it's a bad thing, personally.

30) I certainly hope so!

31) I think it's pretty depressing how he wants no sunlight and no noise from the outside world.

32) Yeah, he's definitely lost it. Going hairless just so his suit fits better (I think that's why)?

33) Good point. During their chat, I was really torn. Wade was being so open, and there was so much he didn't know about Art3mis. And yet, I thought it was perhaps good for him to express some interest in something (or someone) other than the egg, you know? But Art3mis made a good point: his feelings for her were probably not genuine, as they were for her avatar, for a side of her she chose to show.

34) I was surprised, too, and I cringed at his declaration of love, as I knew she wouldn't reciprocate. I do wonder if there's something she's hiding, but it might just be that she's scared.

35) Definitely cool. He could be a big weapon against the Sixers later on.

36) I don't think it'll change much either. Kim L makes a good point, though, that realizing you have a problem is the first step to recovery.

37) Me too! I was reading a borrowed copy before, but after talking it up for the past few days, my boyfriend went out and bought us a hard copy. He says he bought it for me, but I know the truth: I finally got him interested in a book I was reading! (My boyfriend barely reads, except for the occasional zombie novel, so this is incredibly exciting for me.)

27) I'm the most suspicious of him, too. His reaction to the disturbance in the chat room didn't seem right, for one.

28) They were younger than I expected. I liked that they were brothers, though.

29) I think so, too.

30) I can see various scenarios playing out. I'm inclined to think Wade won't be the first to reach the key this time, though.

31) It creeped me out, too!

32) I think so, too. Talking to Max Headroom, for instance, just so he doesn't get lonely. Or his desire to black out his mirror. Or the fact that he doesn't wear any clothes but his OASIS suit. All very sad.

33) Yes, she's holding something back. Is it just that she's scared to reveal her true self, for fear that Wade won't want her? Or is she hiding a secret? Hmm. I enjoyed their chat, too. It was fun seeing Art3mis open up as it went along.

34) I hope she isn't either.

35) Definitely weird! Dancing in the air and shape-shifting? Very bizarre.

36) Great point. I hope so. At least he's started exercising (if only to fit into his suit) and eating well.

37) Same here! It's so hard to put it down every day.

38) What do you think of Wade's stronghold planet Falco? If you bought your own small planet on OASIS and designed it and furnished it yourself, what it would look like (or be modeled after)?

39) Do you find the "voyeur channels" - the option for every avatar to have his or her channel - realistic in terms of where our television industry is headed?

40) Do you think Wade has gotten carried away buying expensive weapons, clothes, transportation, and furnishings? Do you think he'd need a full-time job if he didn't buy such things? Or does he need good ships, weapons, etc., for safety?

41) What will the significance be of the quarter from the perfect Pac-Man game? Did you expect something specific or significant to happen after he completed it?

42) Do you think Aech will regret helping Wade with the Jade Key? Will they repair their friendship?

43) What did you think of the Zork simulation as the challenge for the Jade Key? Having played Zork, I loved the reference, but I think it defeats the purpose of the game to have everything visible around you.

44) Were you surprised Sorrento was the first to reach the Second Gate (and shortly afterward, the Crystal Key)? And what about Wade's "plan" to jump off of his apartment building should IOI find the egg first? Wow.

45) How did you react to Daito's death? Did it shock you to find out it was real?

46) What did you make of Shoto's story? I found the idea of hikikomori very sad. What about Shoto's new motive - revenge?

47) How did you like the 3-D Black Tiger simulation? We've talked about favorite games, but if you could jump into any video game or PC game this way and play it, what would it be?

48) I wonder what the robot is for… Any thoughts or ideas? What do you make of the clue for the Crystal Key? Wade seems to have already figured it out.

49. The clue for the Crytal key says the gate cannot be unlocked alone. What do you think that means?

50. Are you surprised Wade decided to come up with a plan that involved the other members of the High Five after working solo for so long?

51. Wade was so nervous about going back outside after so long, he was shaking. Do you think he will be able to change after taking IOI down?

52. Did you think Wade was crazy for going into IOI?

53. Did you suspect that IOI was spying on the High Five?

54. So, Art3mis has a birthmark. Do you think that was why she was hesistant to get close to Wade or do you think it was because of the hunt for the Easter egg?

55. IOI had the least amount of info on Aech. Why do you think that is?

56. Do you think Wade is still thinking about winning the prize or does he have other things on his mind now?

message 66: by Kaitlin (new)

Kaitlin (kait-k) | 455 comments 39) Do you find the "voyeur channels" - the option for every avatar to have his or her channel - realistic in terms of where our television industry is headed? Absolutely. Between YouTube and Twitter, we're pretty much already there.

40) Do you think Wade has gotten carried away buying expensive weapons, clothes, transportation, and furnishings? Do you think he'd need a full-time job if he didn't buy such things? Or does he need good ships, weapons, etc., for safety? It's crazy how much he spends on his virtual things. I'm sure he wouldn't need a job because he's already got endorsements. He was pretty whiny about his job, but it's kind of perfect for him. Also, 40 hours a week (when you literally never leave the house) is not that much time.

42) Do you think Aech will regret helping Wade with the Jade Key? Will they repair their friendship? Their friendship isn't as key to the story as I thought it would be, or at least it doesn't seem that way. It's nice Aech reciprocated, though; I thought Wade was going to get screwed.

43) What did you think of the Zork simulation as the challenge for the Jade Key? Having played Zork, I loved the reference, but I think it defeats the purpose of the game to have everything visible around you. I'm losing interest a little and skimmed most of that...oops. I wasn't familiar with Zork.

44) Were you surprised Sorrento was the first to reach the Second Gate (and shortly afterward, the Crystal Key)? And what about Wade's "plan" to jump off of his apartment building should IOI find the egg first? Wow. Absolutely! I feel like Wade was especially down on himself during this section. It's starting to make him a little frustrating as a protagonist; it's hard to want things for someone who doesn't want them for himself.

45) How did you react to Daito's death? Did it shock you to find out it was real? I didn't expect that it was real. I thought it was interested that D and S weren't really brothers and had never met. It shows how similar world cultures are - that everywhere social life has been reduced to solely virtual interaction. But hey, here I am writing to people I've never met :)...I did leave the house today, though, I swear! Also I have eyebrows.

46) What did you make of Shoto's story? I found the idea of hikikomori very sad. What about Shoto's new motive - revenge? Yeah. I think there are versions of that today, just less extreme ones. I'm hoping Shoto's revenge will be successful!

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Discussion Questions for Chapters 0 - 5

1) What do you think of Ernest Cline's vision of the future? Is it realistic or far-fetched? Why, or why not? I found the "stacks" of mobile homes imaginative, personally.
The vision of a virtual reality future has appeared in many books and I found this virtual reality to be incredibly believable based on the current technology of society. It's not fully submerse able and still video game enough to be believe bale, but has aspects of the real world such as online careers and school which you can actually find in today's society (just a little dumbed down.)

2) First impressions of Halliday? What did you think of his Invitation? If you were a billionaire and had no friends or family, what would you do with your money when you died?
I think Halliday was a bit eccentric, but he died doing what he loved and he wanted to make sure that someone took over his estate that had that same love he did, hence the quest. My guess is that in order to find the keys you have to pass tests that show you think and act similar to Halliday in certain situations and show that you would run OASIS in a similar manner, thus keeping people like the Sixers from ever really finding it.

3) I love the term "gunter," hehe. Would you participate in the hunt? Or would you be inclined to think it was all a big hoax?
I wouldn't think it was a hoax, I just wouldn't think that I would be the one to find it. I've never been very good at puzzles or finding game easter eggs. In fact, there are very few games I've found them in on my own and I play a lot of games. I cheat a lot :-P

4) I'm also loving all of these video game references. I grew up playing old PC games and Atari with my Dad. Do you have any favorite video games (childhood or otherwise)?
My first system was the Atari and I've owned a ton of systems since then. I'm still big into games playing mostly PC games these days. I love that I recognize a lot of the games that the author talks about, whether I actually played them or not. I spent countless hours playing games like Ikari Warriors, Burgertime, Elevator Action, Zelda, all the Marios, and so many others...just to name a few of the oldies.

5) Seems like Wade's had a difficult life so far. Thoughts? He appears to be very resourceful - I thought his hideout was pretty neat.
His hideout is pretty awesome actually. The fact that he was able to make something out of nothing like that and create his own private space like that is pretty cool. It sucks that his family seems to be such a group of losers, but then again, he probably wouldn't be as drawn to the egg hunt if his family wasn't so poor. It's basically his only way out which gives him more reason to succeed then others. He has to work harder to get just as far as some others therefore making it more then just a hobby to him, it's a lifestyle choice. Something to live by.

6) What do you think of OASIS (loaded question, I know)? It's much bigger than I imagined (with jobs, real estate). What is your favorite part? Mine is definitely being able to access fictional worlds (such as Middle Earth or the Firefly Universe). Do you think it is well-imagined?
My favorite part was when he said you could access any book, movie, song, etc ever made for free!!!! That's all I would need forever.

7) Can you see the appeal of escaping a world in crisis? What are the consequences of doing so?
I definitely see the appeal as no one wants to deal with reality. The consequence is that if everyone is escaping then no one is dealing with reality and therefore no one is really fixing reality and therefore the world will just continue to deteriorate around them as their virtual world gets better. You get to the point where the machines win and society fails.

8) I can imagine everyone's frustration over IOI's planned takeover. I wouldn't want ads or a subscription fee, either. What do you think of the "Sixers," as the gunters call them? Will they be threats later on as the search continues for the egg?
A threat in the sense that they may hinder the abilities of other gunters by using physical violence or threats. I don't think they could find the eggs on their own though. I think Halliday was smart enough to realize this would happen and figured out a way to keep the egg out of the hands of people with this mentality. I keep thinking about the mirror at the end of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone where you had to want the stone to have not to use in order to receive it. It's all about state of mind and intent.

9) Do you think we will ever meet Art3mis the blogger? What are your impressions of her (if you have any)? What do you think of Aech?
I think she will be the love interest in the story and we will see more of her later on.

10) What did you think of this first section overall? Are you hooked?
Definitely hooked!

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Discussion Questions for Chapters 6 - 10

11) Do you find Wade's obsessive dedication to the egg hunting commendable or sad?
Somewhere in between. He doesn't have much going for him in his life so the hunt gives him something to be excited about.

12) If gunters don't share anything related to the egg with each other, what do you think they talk about on message boards?
I think things are shared to an extent. Some people overshare what they've found such as the guy with the Limerick. They also share info on Halliday's favorite things and random 80's trivia.

13) Okay, this one isn't a question - I just had to acknowledge that you can sign up for Quidditch as a school sport in OASIS. That is all.
It would be awesome to play some of the sports from your favorite books, but I don't understand how you would mimic the flying since they said you mimic the body motions of sports.

14) What did you make of Halliday's hiding place on Ludus? What does it say about him that he (appears to have) wanted a student to find the Copper Key?
It shows that he didn't want anyone to have to use money as a means to finish the quest which is applaudable. Just intelligence. It's also a zone that most wouldn't think to search through and therefore a great hiding place. I don't know if it was intended for a student to find or not or just a convenient hiding place since it would draw little attention. Halliday was very proud of the school system being a part of OASIS though so who knows.

15) Did you expect things to play out the way they did in the Tomb of Horrors? The image of Wade playing Joust with Acererak was incredibly bizarre, which fits with Halliday's eccentric personality, I suppose.
I didn't think that Wade would end up fighting because I don't see Wade dying in this story (avatar or not) and being a physical challenge just didn't seem to fit. I loved the game joust growing up! Played soooo many hours of that game! Having it be a game was fitting since they were playing a game challenge inside a large D&D game. The ultimate meeting of video games and pen & paper games.

16) Did you expect that someone else had found the Tomb first? Do you trust Art3mis? Now that she has a Copper Key of her own, do you think she and Wade be running into each other more often on their quest?
I didn't think that anyone had found the tomb yet. I don't know what to think of Ar3mis yet. We'll see what happens with her. I don't think she has what it takes to go all the way with the keys and the gates but she's definitely bright. Will definitely continue to be the love interest of the story and probably an integral part of the quest.

17) What will things be like for Wade now? What will his relationship be like with Aech? Will he still attend school?
If Wade was smart, he would attempt to lay low for awhile before trying to travel anywhere regarding the quest, or at least plant some false clues. Everyone is watching him for his next move. The scoreboard is really a hindrance. Almost a test of it's own to see how he handles the pressure of popularity. I'm pretty sure he'll stay in school. That's the only reason he has access to the OASIS in the first place.

18) What do you think is beyond the gate?
Some sort of clue to the next key? No idea really.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments @Lisarenee Post #33 - Wade had said earlier that college wasn't an option for him because his grades were too low for a scholarship and he couldn't afford it outright therefore the hunt was basically his only option of ever getting out of the stacks. Also the jobs he wanted had long lines of applicants which is why he couldn't find a job, even part time, to help fund his hunt. He would end up in a dead beat job like the rest of the people that lived there.

19) What did you think of the WarGames simulation as Wade's quest? Have you ever watched a movie so many times you feel like you can quote it line for line? If so, what movie(s)?

I thought it was neat, but I could never quote a movie line for line. It would be Game Over before I even started.

20) I'm not surprised GSS created Flicksyncs after finding out about the simulation. If you could jump into a movie or TV series and play through it, which would it be?

I am not surprised either. I'd want to jump into One for the Money. lol

21) First impressions of Ogden Morrow? What did you think of his interview with the press? Will he be a factor later on in the book?

I think it's interesting that Ogden and Halliday didn't stay in touch. I feel really sorry for Halliday. He was so alone>

22) Now Aech has the first key and gate. Will Wade regret helping Aech with the key? Will their friendship continue to hold up despite their competition?

I don't think so, but you never know.

23) Am I the only one who thinks these endorsement deals are a bad idea? Isn't it a bad thing for his avatar's face to be plastered everywhere? On the other hand, it looks like the money he'll earn might save him in the real world.

I didn't think it was a bad idea. It's what Wade needed to survive on his own and to be able to devote himself full time to the egg hunt. Plus, I think his avatar will be plastered everywhere regardless.

24) What did you think of Sorrento? Did you find any of his offers tempting? Do you think Aech or Art3mis will sell out?

I don't like him.I hope no one takes him up on his offer.

25) Were you as surprised as I was that IOI had unearthed Wade's identity and location? Did you think Sorrento was bluffing with the explosives?

Yes, I was very surprised. I totally didn't expect that. I hoped so.

26) What will Wade do now? It looks like he'll be hunted in both realities. How will he handle the deaths of those in the stacks?

I think he knows it's not his fault so hopefully he'll be okay. Very scary.

51. Wade was so nervous about going back outside after so long, he was shaking. Do you think he will be able to change after taking IOI down? Definitely. I think it will just depend what happens with the rest of society. People are resilient and can adapt to almost anything.

52. Did you think Wade was crazy for going into IOI? I figured he had to have a plan! It was pretty risky but seems to be working out.

53. Did you suspect that IOI was spying on the High Five? Yep; that's their thing. I was surprised that there was an actual file with all the info in it, though. I would've thought it'd be a little more covert. And I was surprised they were planning on murdering all of the top five.

54. So, Art3mis has a birthmark. Do you think that was why she was hesistant to get close to Wade or do you think it was because of the hunt for the Easter egg? I hope it was because of the egg, but the birthmark probably had something to do with it.

56. Do you think Wade is still thinking about winning the prize or does he have other things on his mind now? I think he's still focused on the prize. He was so good at planning for all these crazy events that I think nothing will get in his way (except maybe his infatuation with Art3mis).

39 - Good point!

40 - I agree, his job was perfect for him. And I didn't find it very necessary. True, he probably needed Falco, in the sense that he needed a safe place from the Sixers. But most of the stuff inside it seemed pretty exorbitant. And I don't think he needed such an expensive OASIS rig or the smell tower (whatever it was called).

42 - Yeah, I wondered how Wade was possibly going to catch up.

44 - Good point. It was definitely frustrating for him to think that life wouldn't be worth living if IOI won the egg. That's such a depressing thought.

45 - I thought they were brothers, too. I think we tend to believe what we're told/what we see of people online, even if experience tells us they could be the exact opposite of the person they say they are.

46 - Oh yes, definitely versions of that today. I'm hoping Shoto will be successful, too.

1 - I agree! I think OASIS is a ways off, but virtual reality will be here in no time. I really love the author's vision, with OASIS. It's endless.

3 - Yeah, I probably wouldn't participate because I know I wouldn't find it. I'm not very good at finding easter eggs, either. I tend to cheat, too, and look up their locations online. ;-)

4 - This is definitely a book for gamers.

5 - LOVED his hideout. Great point about Wade's family and the egg.

6 - Oh, I know! Crazy cool.

7 - Yes, I completely agree. And then what happens if everything deteriorates to the point where the sky is so poisoned that it's dangerous to live there? And food is so scarce that the population slowly dies out from starvation? What will people do then?

8 - Love your comparison to Harry Potter. :-D

10 - Glad you're enjoying it!

11 - Yes, very true. I think what I find most sad is that his whole life is devoted to a world that isn't real.

13 - I'm not sure, either, but I bet there are many instances throughout OASIS where you'd need to fly (certain quests, etc.), so I'm sure there are controls that allow you to do so under the right circumstances.

14 - Good point!

15 - So neat that you played Joust growing up! I bet you loved this reference, then. Also loved the point you made about the meeting of pen & paper games and video games.

17 - I agree about the scoreboard.

21 - I wonder what caused their falling-out.

23 - Hmm, good point. I guess I tend to be overly cautious when it comes to contracts and fine print.

25 - Me too. I didn't expect IOI to go there.

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Discussion Questions for Chapters 27 - 31

49. The clue for the Crytal key says the gate cannot be unlocked alone. What do you think that means?
He'll need others with him when he tries to unlock it - others who also have the Crystal Key in their possession. I think it'll be a group quest.

50. Are you surprised Wade decided to come up with a plan that involved the other members of the High Five after working solo for so long?
No. Even if the final gate could be unlocked alone, I think he would still involve the others, given IOI's control over Anorak's Castle and their plan to capture the remaining members of the High Five.

51. Wade was so nervous about going back outside after so long, he was shaking. Do you think he will be able to change after taking IOI down?
I don't know what to think. His desire to see the outside world seemed very abrupt to me, but I do think there's been some sort of change in him and I think it's for the better.

52. Did you think Wade was crazy for going into IOI?
Well, I certainly didn't expect him to do it, and I bet IOI didn't either. He was lucky those pass codes worked, that's for sure. I think it was a brilliant (if incredibly risky) move.

53. Did you suspect that IOI was spying on the High Five?
Yeah. I'm not surprised they had plans to abduct and kill Art3mis and Shoto, either.

54. So, Art3mis has a birthmark. Do you think that was why she was hesistant to get close to Wade or do you think it was because of the hunt for the Easter egg?
I think it was both, but I could see it being the birthmark.

55. IOI had the least amount of info on Aech. Why do you think that is?
I honestly don't know. I find him very mysterious.

56. Do you think Wade is still thinking about winning the prize or does he have other things on his mind now?
He definitely still wants to win, but I don't think he'd be horribly unhappy about Art3mis or Shoto winning (not sure about Aech). I think he just really, really doesn't want IOI to win.

52 - He always seems to have everything figured out, doesn't he? He's much smarter than I was at eighteen.

53 - I don't think they expected that someone could get into their system so easily (well, it was easy for Wade, anyway).

54 - I could definitely see it being because of the birthmark. She's a girl, after all. I thought it was sweet, though, that Wade thought she was more beautiful in real life.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments answers to Discussion Questions for Chapters 15 - 19

27) Is it possible that Sorrento's already gotten to someone in the "High Five," as Art3mis puts it? Or are the members too smart for that?

You'd hope they'd be too smart. Besides it's only a fracion of the prize money.

28) First impressions of Daito and Shoto? Were they what you expected?

They seem cautious as well they should. Not exactly a friendly duo.

29) What about the disturbance in the corner of the chat room? Did IOI break into it somehow? Or is something else going on?

I'm not sure what that was but I'm guessing someone was spying.

30) It looks like things are headed to an all-out war between the Sixers and the gunters. Who do you think will reach the Jade Key first?

That's a tough one to call. No telling at this point, but I'd bet IOI needs to get to the first spot in order to add a little drama to the book.

31) Were you surprised at how easy it was for Wade to create a new identity and set up a new home? Do you like his new place and new gear?

I was surprised, but it sounds like he's a computer genius. You'd think he'd need to have more friends, however, to find out about these things. The new pad seems nice.

32) What do you think of Wade's decision to stay inside until he finds the egg? What does it say about him that he avoids interaction with any human being whatsoever?

It makes me nervous that he's staying in one place. He definitely seems to be lacking social skills.

33) What did you think of the chat between Art3mis and Wade? Why do you think Art3mis is so reluctant to reveal anything personal about herself?

I think she's just being cautious. She's right that without personally meeting someone in the real world you have no clue who you're talking to. Plus, she's probably a little worried about foul play.

34) Do you think Wade was too obvious about his feelings for her? Do you think Art3mis is manipulating him in any way? Or does she perhaps not trust him to care about the real her?

She seemed like a nice person when the two met, so I'm going to say that I don't think so.

35) What did you think of Ogden's dance party? Surprised the Sixers crashed it? And what about Og's lightning superpower? That was pretty neat.

That was a neat little bit to the story. Og reminds me a little of the Wizard of Oz.

36) Book quote:"I was just another sad, lost, lonely soul, wasting his life on a glorified videogame." What do you think brought about this realization? Will this change anything to have admitted this to himself?

I'm curious if the contest will make him realize he can't lock himself away from reality and feel fufilled. Seems like he's starting to want more than what the Oasis can give him. I think he wants a real relationship with Art3mis.

37) Now that we are roughly halfway through the book, what is your overall opinion of it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?

I'm loving the book.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Answers to Discussion Questions for Chapters 20 - 26

38) What do you think of Wade's stronghold planet Falco? If you bought your own small planet on OASIS and designed it and furnished it yourself, what it would look like (or be modeled after)?

I have no idea.

39) Do you find the "voyeur channels" - the option for every avatar to have his or her channel - realistic in terms of where our television industry is headed?

They do it now on the internet so I don't know if it would happen on TV, but some of the reality TV shows come pretty close.

40) Do you think Wade has gotten carried away buying expensive weapons, clothes, transportation, and furnishings? Do you think he'd need a full-time job if he didn't buy such things? Or does he need good ships, weapons, etc., for safety?

After the sixers tried to kill him I don't think he's getting carried away. It's what he needs.

41) What will the significance be of the quarter from the perfect Pac-Man game? Did you expect something specific or significant to happen after he completed it?

I have no clue, but I can't wait to find out what it does.

42) Do you think Aech will regret helping Wade with the Jade Key? Will they repair their friendship?

I don't think so, but we'll see.

43) What did you think of the Zork simulation as the challenge for the Jade Key? Having played Zork, I loved the reference, but I think it defeats the purpose of the game to have everything visible around you.

I never played Zork, but it sounded fun.

44) Were you surprised Sorrento was the first to reach the Second Gate (and shortly afterward, the Crystal Key)? And what about Wade's "plan" to jump off of his apartment building should IOI find the egg first? Wow.

That was just sad.

45) How did you react to Daito's death? Did it shock you to find out it was real?

Not after what happened with Wade. I hope everyone else is more cautious now.

46) What did you make of Shoto's story? I found the idea of hikikomori very sad. What about Shoto's new motive - revenge?

It is sad. I hope he can get his vengeance.

47) How did you like the 3-D Black Tiger simulation? We've talked about favorite games, but if you could jump into any video game or PC game this way and play it, what would it be?

I'm not sure. I haven't played any video games in years.

48) I wonder what the robot is for… Any thoughts or ideas? What do you make of the clue for the Crystal Key? Wade seems to have already figured it out.

I am always wondering what the clues mean. I just sit back and enjoy the ride. lol

57) What did you think of Wade's plan to email every member of OASIS and invite them to join the fight? I thought it was pretty ballsy, but it worked! It was great everyone could join together like that.

58)Did Ogden's appearance in their chat room surprise you? What did you make of his offer of help? YES! I'm so glad it was actually him. He's so sweet and sad. He makes me want to drink tea with him and talk about classic literature or something.

59) Were you shocked at Aech's true identity? What did you think of Wade's reaction? I was. I just pictured him how the avatar was described. I'm not surprised how Wade reacted; I think he's just happy that they got to meet and that they're on the same side.

60) What did you make of Aech's story? It's sad, but it looks like things are turning around for all of them soon.

61) Were you surprised at how many gunters showed up outside the castle? That all of them chose to fight? Very. It turned a game that's really about self-interest to more of a moral thing, which was nice.

62) What did you think of the battle? Did Shoto's sacrifice surprise you? What about Wade's decision to go after Sorrento instead of escape inside the castle? That probably wasn't the smartest, and I understood what Art3mis was upset. But hey, Wade is really putting his neck out there now...

63) So, talk about a shocker - were you surprised the Catalyst came back into play this way? Yes. Did not predict that!

64) What do you think will be Wade's final test? IDK, but I'm excited to see how this plays out! Loved this section.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Discussion Questions for Chapters 11 - 14

19) What did you think of the WarGames simulation as Wade's quest? Have you ever watched a movie so many times you feel like you can quote it line for line? If so, what movie(s)?
I was excited about the WarGames reference. My bf is in love with that movie! I've never been the type that could recite a movie line for line so I probably wouldn't be very good at this, although if I had been studying it then maybe. Too bad it wasn't Hackers...

20) I'm not surprised GSS created Flicksyncs after finding out about the simulation. If you could jump into a movie or TV series and play through it, which would it be?
Anything by Joss Whedon - Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse, etc. Or Dr. Who. Or Harry Potter. Or so many other choices.

21) First impressions of Ogden Morrow? What did you think of his interview with the press? Will he be a factor later on in the book?
I think he knows more then he's letting on. He'll probably have a big role at the end with delivering the prize to the winner and such

22) Now Aech has the first key and gate. Will Wade regret helping Aech with the key? Will their friendship continue to hold up despite their competition?
I think their friendship will last to the end. Wade didn't really help Aech any more then he helped Daito and Shoto. The hint about Joust was just a hint, Aech would have been able to beat it anyway just as Wade had.

23) Am I the only one who thinks these endorsement deals are a bad idea? Isn't it a bad thing for his avatar's face to be plastered everywhere? On the other hand, it looks like the money he'll earn might save him in the real world.
I don't think he could keep his avatars face secret anyways due to the fact that he's so famous. Plus he has a default skin so probably looks plain and simple and indistinguishable from everyone else. He can use some credits to change his appearance anytime he wants in the OASIS and the money could really help him in life, especially now.

24) What did you think of Sorrento? Did you find any of his offers tempting? Do you think Aech or Art3mis will sell out?
The 5 million is tempting, but I don't think he would have actually received the money. They obviously would go to any extreme to find the key therefore why not lie about money.

25) Were you as surprised as I was that IOI had unearthed Wade's identity and location? Did you think Sorrento was bluffing with the explosives?
It didn't really surprise me. They have the money and the power to do what they want when they want therefore why not just blow someone up. Wade made the mistake of using his real name and such for school, but then why would he have ever thought that he would be key holder #1 when he signed up for school? Who really thinks that far ahead?

26) What will Wade do now? It looks like he'll be hunted in both realities. How will he handle the deaths of those in the stacks?
He wasn't very attached to anyone so yes the deaths may sting, but he'll pick himself up quickly. I'm surprised he didn't take Aech up on the offer of a place to stay or something, find a friend in the real world. Although he's always been independent, why not now? I'm interested to see what happens to him next especially when the sixers find out that he wasn't in the building that blew up.

49. The clue for the Crytal key says the gate cannot be unlocked alone. What do you think that means?

Maybe it requires something more like another key or another object?

50. Are you surprised Wade decided to come up with a plan that involved the other members of the High Five after working solo for so long?

I'm not. I don't think he ever wanted to be solo. He is the one who seems to collect friends via the Oasis. I think he's just never had the opportunity to make friends in the real world. I think he craves closeness.

51. Wade was so nervous about going back outside after so long, he was shaking. Do you think he will be able to change after taking IOI down?

I hope so.

52. Did you think Wade was crazy for going into IOI?

Yes, but it might be necessary in order to prevent himself from getting murdered and his friends. They might just kill him for spite if he wins. The company needs to be brought down.

53. Did you suspect that IOI was spying on the High Five?

Maybe they were the ones that knocked down the comic books. I just don't see how they could have gained access, but maybe they hacked their way in

54. So, Art3mis has a birthmark. Do you think that was why she was hesistant to get close to Wade or do you think it was because of the hunt for the Easter egg?

Maybe it was the birthmark. It would explain her thoughts when she asked him that question about what if she was disfigured

55. IOI had the least amount of info on Aech. Why do you think that is?

He must have kept his personal information seperate just to be safe.

56. Do you think Wade is still thinking about winning the prize or does he have other things on his mind now?

I think his priorities have changed. He already was willing to give up his quest for Art3mis.

27) Is it possible that Sorrento's already gotten to someone in the "High Five," as Art3mis puts it? Or are the members too smart for that?
I feel like there will be some big twist and Sorento will have gotten to Art3mis or Aech

28) First impressions of Daito and Shoto? Were they what you expected?
Kind of. I didn't really have expectations but they seem like your typical Japanese nerdy duo.

29) What about the disturbance in the corner of the chat room? Did IOI break into it somehow? Or is something else going on?
Definitely think something weird was going on. Some sort of surveillance or break in.

30) It looks like things are headed to an all-out war between the Sixers and the gunters. Who do you think will reach the Jade Key first?
As a plot twist I think it will be the sixers.

31) Were you surprised at how easy it was for Wade to create a new identity and set up a new home? Do you like his new place and new gear?
I'm not surprised. In a world in shatters such as it is new identities should be fairly easy to come by. No one really tracks deaths it seems. I'm wondering how long he'll be able to afford his new digs if he doesn't crack the Jade key.

32) What do you think of Wade's decision to stay inside until he finds the egg? What does it say about him that he avoids interaction with any human being whatsoever?
It doesn't surprise me that he chose to become a loaner. He was basically doing that before. Now everyone he knew in the world is dead so why not enter the OASIS full time? At least he's keeping his health up.

33) What did you think of the chat between Art3mis and Wade? Why do you think Art3mis is so reluctant to reveal anything personal about herself?
I think she's a spy.

34) Do you think Wade was too obvious about his feelings for her? Do you think Art3mis is manipulating him in any way? Or does she perhaps not trust him to care about the real her?
Definitely manipulating. In the end she may have liked him too much and that's why she backed down when he got too close.

35) What did you think of Ogden's dance party? Surprised the Sixers crashed it? And what about Og's lightning superpower? That was pretty neat.
Definitely saw the Sixers coming, and I'm surprised there weren't more precautions in place for that. I'm sure Og has all sorts of awesome powers since he helped create the system. One of the perks of admin powers.

36) Book quote:"I was just another sad, lost, lonely soul, wasting his life on a glorified videogame." What do you think brought about this realization? Will this change anything to have admitted this to himself?
Maybe it will change what he intends to do with the money if/when he finds the egg? If the world was better then they wouldn't have to waste all their life in a virtual system and could interact with live people and be social.

37) Now that we are roughly halfway through the book, what is your overall opinion of it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?
I love this book! So many amazing references to nerd-dom that make me squee. I can't believe I waited this long to read this book!

57) What did you think of Wade's plan to email every member of OASIS and invite them to join the fight?

Very Inventive. It oould work.

58) Did Ogden's appearance in their chat room surprise you? What did you make of his offer of help?

Yes, but it made sense. I knew someone had to be spying and I couldn't figure out how IOI would have managed it.

59) Were you shocked at Aech's true identity? What did you think of Wade's reaction?

Yes, Everyone speculated Art3mis might be a man, but who would have thoght Aech was a female. I laughed too. She did warn him his avatar looked nothing like him.

60) What did you make of Aech's story?

A very sad tale when parents can't accept their children for who they are. It's just not right.

61) Were you surprised at how many gunters showed up outside the castle? That all of them chose to fight?

No, I kind of expected it.

62) What did you think of the battle? Did Shoto's sacrifice surprise you? What about Wade's decision to go after Sorrento instead of escape inside the castle?

Shoto's sacrifice didn't surprise me. I don't think he ever intended to finish the game after his "brother" died. I think he is anothter person who was mainly in the game because he was lonely. I don't think he had the skill set to win.

63) So, talk about a shocker - were you surprised the Catalyst came back into play this way?

Yes and no. I have to admit I would have thought after they opened the door they should have been safe. So I was surprised it could still take them out. I'm not surprised when the sixers realized they were about to lose their chance at the egg that they would kill and destroy everything. They had their spares. Makes you wonder how many people they had on the pay roll?

64) What do you think will be Wade's final test?
I haven't been able to guess anything yet so I'm clueless. Perhaps a series of more tests?

57 - Me too! I thought there were definitely a lot of risks associated with his plan, but in the end, he knew what he was doing.

58 - Yes, I agree! Sweet and sad is a good description.

59 - I liked Wade's reaction, especially the laughter. I'm not sure how I would react in a similar situation, if I were in Wade's shoes. I would be pretty upset by the betrayal, but in the end, I think I would just be happy I got to meet my best friend in real life.

61 - Ooh, good answer.

63 - Me neither. I had to read it a couple of times, actually, for everything to sink it and make sense. My brain was still reeling a bit from the giant gunters-Sixers battle.

19 - I've actually never seen WarGames, but I think I'm going to rent it now. :-) This book has made me want to watch a lot of 80s movies, actually.

20 - Ahh, me too! For me definitely Doctor Who or Buffy. Firefly would be awesome, too. Oh, and Harry Potter... So many choices, I know!

23 - Good points, all of them. I think, though, that his avatar's body is modeled after his real one, just better looking. But the money is especially helpful.

24 - Very true.

25 - I think this is when I realized that IOI really could do anything they wanted. Up until then, I'd seen them as a threat, but not really capable of something like this. This twist threw the book in an entirely new direction for me.

31 - I hadn't thought about it that way - that with the world being a disorganized mess, it might be easier to create new identities.

32 - I am glad he started exercising and eating better, though only so he wouldn't have to buy bigger gear.

35 - I was surprised, too, that there weren't more precautions.

37 - Me neither! Loving it, too.

27) Is it possible that Sorrento's already gotten to someone in the "High Five," as Art3mis puts it? Or are the members too smart for that?
I think it is. He seems to be very resourceful.

28) First impressions of Daito and Shoto? Were they what you expected?
I was surprised by their anger at the suggestion that they all come together to fight against the sixers and get the egg, but all of the rest of their personalities seemed to fit in with the Oriental cultures.

29) What about the disturbance in the corner of the chat room? Did IOI break into it somehow? Or is something else going on?
I wondered if maybe it was Morrow himself trying to give them a clue. I never thought about it being a break in, but that could be very possible.

30) It looks like things are headed to an all-out war between the Sixers and the gunters. Who do you think will reach the Jade Key first?
I have a feeling it will be Art3mis, but it could be the sixers. Wade needs a wake up call to get back in the game.

31) Were you surprised at how easy it was for Wade to create a new identity and set up a new home? Do you like his new place and new gear?
No, I knew from the beginning that he was a very smart kid and could do wonders with computers. I am not surprised that he is great at hacking.

32) What do you think of Wade's decision to stay inside until he finds the egg? What does it say about him that he avoids interaction with any human being whatsoever?
I think that he is more scared of the sixers than anything. It is sad to me though that he won't even venture outside at least some of the time or look out through his window. I hope that he changes later on in the book.

33) What did you think of the chat between Art3mis and Wade? Why do you think Art3mis is so reluctant to reveal anything personal about herself?
This whole thing made me a bit suspicious of her. I am wondering if she is truly who she says she is and if she isn't just trying to distract Wade on purpose to get to the egg first.

34) Do you think Wade was too obvious about his feelings for her? Do you think Art3mis is manipulating him in any way? Or does she perhaps not trust him to care about the real her?
I think that when you have a crush on someone, it is hard at times to hide your feelings. I also don't think it would have made much of a difference. I still feel suspicious of her and I think she may be manipulating Wade.

35) What did you think of Ogden's dance party? Surprised the Sixers crashed it? And what about Og's lightning superpower? That was pretty neat.
I thought it was cool. I would love to go to a club that had a dance floor like that, just to experience it. I wasn't surprised that the Sixers crashed it at all.

36) Book quote:"I was just another sad, lost, lonely soul, wasting his life on a glorified videogame." What do you think brought about this realization? Will this change anything to have admitted this to himself?
It doesn't seem like the realization has changed his actions, I am thinking it is going to take more than just the realization that this is all so pathetic to change his ways.

37) Now that we are roughly halfway through the book, what is your overall opinion of it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?
I like the book, I was hoping for a bit more action, but it is still good.

50 - Love your answer, especially what you said about Wade craving closeness.

52 - I agree - very necessary for many reasons.

56 - Good point.

58 - Yes, it did make sense. I couldn't figure out how anyone else could have gotten in either. I kept wondering if Aech was working with the Sixers and let them in or something.

59 - Yeah, I laughed out loud when I read it, too. You're right - everyone suspected Art3mis, but nobody would think to suspect Aech.

60 - I agree.

62 - I agree about Shoto. It made me sad, though. I wish he could have gone out destroying Sorrento's avatar.

63 - I had pretty much forgotten all about the Catalyst, so I was pretty shocked. I thought it was a neat plot twist.

28) Well, they barely knew Wade, Art3mis, and Aech, and had been working on their own for years. I can see why they were hesitant to trust any of them.

31) SUCH a smart kid. Not only to be so gifted with computers, but to be so resourceful, too. And to be able to retain all that Halliday lore. Gah.

32) You're right, and I would be terrified of being discovered by them, too. But yes, blacking out the window was sad.

35) I wasn't surprised, either. I thought it was a big risk of Art3mis and Wade to appear together in public like that.

37) Glad you're liking it!

65 - Did you like Wade's decision to split the money with Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto? Do you think any of them would have done the same?

66 - What did you think of the game Tempest as the first step of the Third Gate? What about Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the second step?

67 - Do you think a Sixer would have been able to solve the last puzzle, would have figured out the password to the computer?

68 - What did you make of Halliday's advice to Wade?

69 - Did you like Art3mis's and Wade's meeting (and happy ending)? Was it what you expected?

70 - What will happen next in Wade's world? Will he ever use the Big Red Button? Will Sorrento go behind bars? And will things finally start to get better?

71 - What did you think of the book overall? Any thoughts you'd like to share? What will you rate it?

I loved this book!!! Totally awesome; I'm such a geek, lol. Every reference made in it I had a memory of, but the fascinating part to me was the vision of the future. I love reading books from authors with good imaginations and a sense of humor.

I rolled over laughing at the conversation Wade had with HappyCock007, when he was tech support for 101.
I loved the sarcasm, lol.

This book had twists and unexpected surprises all the way through it and I loved the subplot of the romance aspect. She was witty as Wade and wasn't your typical "I'll fall head over heals for you because you like me" female character.

I would love to see this be made into a movie. Might be a good chance of it too, seeing as Cline is orginally a script writer and has connections in that field.

I am so glad this book got nominated as a November Book of the Month. What a delightful read!

65 - Did you like Wade's decision to split the money with Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto? Do you think any of them would have done the same?

Yes, There were billions of dollars there and that was too much for one person.

66 - What did you think of the game Tempest as the first step of the Third Gate? What about Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the second step?

I was cracking up with the Holy Grail. I liked that the game was tempest and that Art3mis knew so much about it.

67 - Do you think a Sixer would have been able to solve the last puzzle, would have figured out the password to the computer?

No. I don't think anyone but wade could have figured out the password. I think it was the conversation with Og before he went into the final portion of the game that gave him the answer.

68 - What did you make of Halliday's advice to Wade?

I liked it and it was sad that Halliday figured that out too late.

69 - Did you like Art3mis's and Wade's meeting (and happy ending)? Was it what you expected?

Yes. It was sweet. Yes, it was how I expected it.

70 - What will happen next in Wade's world? Will he ever use the Big Red Button? Will Sorrento go behind bars? And will things finally start to get better?

I don't think he'll use the red button. I hope Sorrento gets put away.I hope they can find a way to make things better.

71 - What did you think of the book overall? Any thoughts you'd like to share? What will you rate it?

I loved it and was totally surprised by that.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Really? Cory Doctorow and Wil Wheaton as President and VP of the OASIS council? That's probably one of the best pairings I could think of to protect user rights and keep the OASIS accessible to the masses. The amount of things they do now to fight for those rights is impeccable and we aren't even talking a virtual reality world yet. I really should have seen it coming but seeing the names took me by surprise and made me have a little nerd happy dance. Now back to reading.

I'm so glad you loved it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I loved Ernest Cline's vision, too. I've read other books with some sort of virtual reality, but I don't think anything will top OASIS from now on.

I loved that part! Too funny.

Warner Brothers bought the rights to the film before the book was even published. I'm not sure how I feel about it being made into a movie. I don't know that it could ever be big enough on screen. I don't know if they'd be able to use all of the references, either. I guess we'll find out.
