CS Lewis: a racist and a misogsist????

I am currently reading this, and I was horrified to find that Lewis was Anti-Semitic (p.35). Or at least he comes across that way in The Magicians Nephew. It goes on to state that disliked women (p. 40-41). While he is prejudicial against the Calormenes (p.38).

What do you people think?

Lucy was one of the main characters that exceeded in intellect above the others. Yet, she was a women. And there is one Calormen that does make it into the new Narnia (Heaven). You may see a hint of what you call misogamy in Narnia, but during the 19th century women were viewed differently (after World War One did women get the right to vote). Whoever points at this point in Lewis' writing either doesn't understand the norms of society during his life, or dislikes his Christian roots and "condescend" him.

I agree with Josiah. It betrays an ill-education to judge a person by social 'norms' applying years after their death. Be wary also of judging (for better or worse) cultures and religions other than your own. What is 'normal' anyway?

Read widely. Balance your sources. For a start you might gain from reading A.N. Wilson's excellent biography of CS Lewis, and also Rowan Williams' "The Lion's World". Good luck.
