Duplicate Character data?

1. Figure out which Kirk is added to more books; then edit the character name to be James T. Kirk (1) ... or something similar.
2. Edit the duplicate character to be James T. Kirk (2)
3. Add James T. Kirk (1) to all the books currently under James T. Kirk (2)
4. Delete James T. Kirk (2) from the databse.
5. Re-edit James T. Kirk (1) back to just James T. Kirk.

Any idea what the best way to find all of the characters that are listed for a given book are for a NON-librarian? I see that a number of Star Trek books have so many characters listed that Montgomery Scott doesn't appear in the details but when I select to ADD him as a librarian I can see from the data entry version of the screen that he's already there.
I'm assuming that the preferred name would be James T. Kirk for our favorite captain. Partly because he's an admiral in some and still a cadet in others. I tried to consolidate them as I would if I were consolidating a duplicate author name and while the names now appear alike there are apparently still two entries in the database.
If one looks at Enterprise by Vonda N. McIntyre one can see that one variant of the name is already listed and yet on the edit characters screen where one typically adds characters there is a second James T. Kirk listed there as well. Ditto for Leonard McCoy.
Perhaps there was a transporter error...
Nevertheless, how does one clean this up?
