Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments That's fantastic news, Tim, well done!

I admire your perseverance, but more than that, I'm looking forward to Hunted... no rush of course, no pressure.

But do hurry up!

Actually, I'm wondering whether to hold book 1 back until book 2 or even 3 is done - like you did with the 3rd Rule. Partly that'll give me a chance to tout it to agents (ever the optimist), but also I have the worry that with just one book I'll chuck it out there and it'll sink without trace...

message 154: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Don't keep us in suspender Tim! The Third Rule is really a single book. (I think)

message 155: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Sure, Hunted is more self contained, in that it has a definite beginning, middle & end, which I think is slightly lacking in 3rd Rule (it reads more like a 3 part tv drama than 3 stories, IYSWIM). I'm hoping that Hunting will be reasonably self contained too, but because it follows straight on from the first book, that Might be tricky (imagine ST3: the search for Spock without ST2:The wrath of Khan...)

message 156: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments You're right, Tim, the typical three act structure is missing from TTR part One, but that's because part one is the first act so to speak. I could have made life easier for myself by publishing it as just one book but where's the fun in that?
Whatever you decide, to publish this book now or wait until you have more to 'put out there', I'm very much looking forward to it.

Tim | 8539 comments I think there's probably space for an omnibus edition - both Darren and Mel have omnibus editions of their series'. But of course I have no idea how well they do compared to the standalone versions.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You could ask them. :)

Tim | 8539 comments So I was supping a pint of something bittery last night in The King's Head and Bell, with some authory chums, and one word kept cropping up... PIRATES! There were other words that cropped up too, some of them were bank and heist, but that's a different story!

Q: Why are pirates called pirates?
A: Because they aaaarrrghhh!

Please note: This is a cookie-free zone (NO! That does not mean the cookies are free, Patti) There's a costume I have to be able to fit into in January...

message 161: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No cookies???

Well, I'll not be visiting this thread again. :p

Tim | 8539 comments Ah, but she didn't leave, did she! (Those invisibility cloaks they've been touting in the press lately don't *really* work, you know, and even if they did, we'd still notice the bottles sliding along the table and "magically" emptying themselves... ;)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Talk to Phil Whiteland. He has a really good one!

message 167: by Tim (new) - added it

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 7663 comments I don't suppose you would consider lobbing a copy of 'Broken City' at his head in the vain hope that the outrage will be featured the 10 o'clock news and make me famous???

Tim | 8539 comments Been playing with word clouds this morning. Go to http://www.wordle.net/create and paste in a bunch of text, then amaze yourself with the results! This is what I got when I pasted in the first draft of Hunted:

message 181: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments Hey that's clever! I might have a go at that myself.

Yours looks great, Tim. I can guess who the protagonist is, hehe.

message 182: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I absolutely love that! Love the colour scheme you've used too.

Tim | 8539 comments Just bought a stack of domain names. timarnot.com was taken (grr), but I got .co.uk and also tim-arnot in both .com and .co.uk 12 quid for the .com and 6 quid for the .co.uk, + vat, all for 2 years.

They're just parked at the mo, but I shall need to think about designing the site (and some artwork...)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hey, good thinking Tim. I read somewhere, maybe a year or more ago, that publishers won't look at authors who don't have a web presence. They take it to indicate seriousness of purpose and professionalism. I wonder who Timar Not is, who's nicked your first choice?

message 190: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments It's parked, just like the ones I bought, so either one of my namesakes (I've corresponded with some of them), or someone out to make a buck ransoming it...

message 191: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Grief, dropped to page 3 in less than a week!!

Anyhow, editing progress: Just 20K to go till I've finished the second draft. Then I'll be looking for beta readers, thinking about the cover etc... :)

message 192: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Oh, that's good progress. Looking forward to that!

message 193: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Okay, so what do we learn, kiddies?

Number one: As soon as you start talking about progress, you skid to a halt!

I've hit a bumpy passage which is just not working. I've already had two goes at rewriting it, but frankly it's dull, dull, dull. It needs an injection of... something. More tension, more conflict. Maybe I should just let it fester in the back of my brain for a day or two in the hope that something will - figuratively or literally - leap out of the bushes.

message 194: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Miss it out, skip over it, come back to it.
That's my considered advice as a non-author. So that'll be no use then!

message 195: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Pretty much what I was thinking. Also looking at intercutting other stuff - like a chase: back and forth between the chaser and chasee. That would rather break my "chapter" rule though. But then rules are made to be broken...

message 196: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments This is true. I think you need to know the rules thoroughly and know why they are rules. Then you have the freedom to break out on your own! I suspect (as I say, I know nothing of the mechanics of it) that editing later chapters might tip you off as to what you need to to with the problem one?

message 197: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments If it's dull, give one of the characters something to think about, something the others in the scene couldn't possibly know; make them distracted as they ponder on a problem.
Or, bring in an outsider who has some news or an object; or an external threat or distraction (weather... bad men coming, that kind of thing).
Or, blend in other scenes that are happening at roughly the same time as this scene, using the *** method.
Or, if the scene cannot be saved, take the pertinent information you wanted to impart (for which the scene was created in the first place), and put it in other chapters or scenes, and just bin it.

message 198: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim | 8539 comments Part of the problem is, there's only one character in the scene. It's pure action, or description of action, and very necessary to the story (so I can't easily bin it - imaging having a bank heist story and you bin the bank heist).

I think intercutting is probably the way to go...

message 199: by Kath (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments See, I knew someone would know. I was just filling in till the cavalry arrived!

message 200: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments Probably a good place then for some revealing interior monologue?
