Michael (michaeldiack) | 180 comments Morning all and Happy Friday,

I’m pleased to announce the release of two novels today! One is a short story collection of 12000 words and the other a factual account of my year of unemployment after graduation, around 10000 words.

Garden Hopping

A collection of short stories. Not recommended for young children.

Getting the Ball Back and Garden Hopping are both explored through the excitable and occasionally nervous eyes of a child. There is sometimes a thin line between reality and youthful imagination.

The Unknown Man and The Creep provide two interludes in this collection of short stories. The Unknown Man is full of atmosphere and intrigue. Who is he, why is he there and what will be his future fate?
Conversely, there is little doubt as to what the disturbed young man in The Creep is doing whilst he lurks in the shadows. Chilling, unwanted attention.

Give Them A Name follows the lives of strangers in the same city. We live our lives oblivious – often wilfully – to other people’s backstory until, by luck or misfortune, a group of lives become unforgettably clashed together in the same moment. One action can have unforeseen consequences for many.

The Year of Unemployment

The optimistic – arrogant, perhaps – vision of a graduate’s future career is quickly beaten out of him by a sequence of hilarious and cringe inducing failures to secure work. Living at home with his Mum, this is an unimpeded insight into a young man’s struggles and successes in work, love and computer games!

Laugh at the honest self-appraisals with a knowing nod to having shared those same experiences. If you cannot empathise with Michael, you are probably young enough to learn from his mistakes and commit his advice to memory. Ten pounds says you won’t, but you’ll have the chance to remember this amusing account of a year of unemployment in the future!

I hope the Year of Unemployment will strike a chord with undergraduates, graduates and basically anyone who appreciates a funny, honest read packed with self-depreciating humour.

Michael (michaeldiack) | 180 comments Hi all,

The second part of my fantasy series, The Light and the Glass, is free for the next five days and the first part is only 77p for a limited time.

The Light and the Glass (Book 2 of Empyria)

The elves and humans know that their fate is intertwined as they seek to survive the threat of enemies known and new. The seven stones of light, hidden by the wicked Mayer, hold the key to victory. But can they trust the renegade dragon brothers, Gorlyx and Brelyx, who offer their only hope of recovering the lost stones?

This is a story full of dilemma and heroic action providing a breathless conclusion to the Empyria fantasy adventure. Strewn with battles against the tightening grip of evil adversaries, thousands must die – but who will survive?

Reviews for Shadows in the Sand, Book 1 of Empyria:

“I am reminded of the early Dune novels by Frank Herbert as well as a bit of Tolkien when I read this book.”

“This is an exciting, action-filled tale, brilliantly and imaginatively plotted and written.”

“Fantastic read! His characters are very well developed and his descriptions are incredible. The plot is fresh and keeps you interested the whole time. This story really comes to life.”

Michael (michaeldiack) | 180 comments Hi all,

Been a long time since I updated this thread. If anyone likes bicycles and magic, I have a new book out called 'The Secret Lives of Bicycles' - a rollickingly fun adventure story for children and adults.

In personal news, I'm getting married this August in Copenhagen where I live and work now.

Review:

A genuinely enjoyable children’s story, one of several I’ve had the pleasure to read of late. Definitely a winner for parents who enjoy reading to their kids, and for kids probably through middle school to read to themselves. Fans of Disney movies like Cars should take readily to finding out that bicycles have lives and engaging personalities all their own. A subtle sense of humor glues this story together as much as the fine storytelling and very accessible emotions. It was very easy to visualize the story throughout; in fact it played like a movie in my head, down to the priceless banter.

Themes of friendship and self-importance/self-worth add gravity and worthwhile long-lasting takeaways to an otherwise entertaining and fully absorbing tale of the moment.

Michael (michaeldiack) | 180 comments Hello,

Been a while since I updated this, very sorry. This year I got married and it was the best day of my life. We were fortunate the Danish weather produced blue skies and 25'C because the summer in general had not been great.

On the writing side:

I'm aiming to release one book a year, quite a low target. The trouble is while I love writing I'm just not making many sales, which is not a problem as I'm not in it for the money - I have a full-time job and I'm very happy. But it's getting to the point where I'm questioning if I can keep justifying spending two hundred pounds or more on my professional editor each time. I know an editor is essential and without him, I'd never release my books. But I must have spent a grand so far on editing and recouped less than fifty pounds in sales.

Which is partly my own fault as I do zero marketing. I do interact on Goodreads on posts about TV, films, etc but I just can't be bothered anymore with Facebook, Twitter, blogs. I've gone down the route of paid advertising and pretty much everything people have discussed on here previously.

So in short I'm going to keep writing because I like it. And I'm going to spend my fiver a month in royalties on a beer.

thanks.

Yes, publishing isn't something you do for the money, is it? Or the fame, come to that.
But someone once said that creating something which didn't exist before is the nearest we can come to magic. So keep waving that wand!
