Choose a trait that describes your protagonist or a secondary character in your IR book.

Remember the criteria for what makes a "4" or exemplar reading response!

Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about?
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Mark Markola | 4 comments In the realistic fiction story, The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen, what best describes the secondary character Conner, is evil and heartless. Conner is the nobleman of The Court and he has a deceitful plan that can make him richer than he now is. Conner desires to become higher in rank than a nobleman. He wishes to be the prime regent and require control of the entire Castle of Carthya. With all of his greed, Conner decides to create a mischievous plan to place a young child on the throne. Conner travels to different orphanages to purchase children who’s appearance he feels is worthy of the throne. The orphans are becoming suspicious and curious of Conner’s intention triggering Conner to reveal his criminal plan. ” This is my plan, I’m going to make one of you kids the long lost prince Jaron and make you rich by your wildest dreams” (21). Conner grabs the orphan’s attention confirming their worst fear. Conner consumes power entirely knowing the orphan’s will be challenged, tortured, and killed. This describes in what way Conner is evil and heartless.

Monica | 43 comments In the realistic fiction book, Just Listen, by Sarah Dessen, the protagonist Annabel, faces lots of troubles in her life. Her sisters Kirsten and Whitney has lots of differences. Kirsten, a short and healthy girl never misses any meals, but on the other hand, Whitney is on the risk of getting a very serious disease. Every single day, Kirsten claims that Whitney has not been eating anything over the past few days. Whitney didn't want her parents to know and Kirsten has been opening her big mouth and blurting out everything about Whitney's strange diet. Her parents began getting worried and tried to help Whitney, but she didn't want them to help her at all. At the moment, Annabel feels lonely. Her high school life is no better. Ever since a summer incident, no one would even look at or talk to her, and now its home life. At home, her parents were full of taking care of her older sisters. "My mother had had higher hopes for Whitney. Two weeks after graduation, they packed her stuff and drove up to move her into the apartment where Kirsten was now living alone.....Besides, my mom said, my sisters were older now, their various conflicts all in the past." Annabel's parents all have their hopes for Whitney. This quote explains how her parents has a big heart for both Whitney and Kirsten. Sending Whitney out by herself at a age of 18 to live with Kirsten, its not a very big opportunity.

In the non-fiction book called We Beat The Streets. By Dr. Samson Davis, Dr. George Jenkins and Dr. Rameck Hunt the one trait they all posses is that they all are determined to excel academically. One piece of evidence from that book that shows that the men are determined is. One that back cover of the book where they blurb is that text clearly states ‘’Then and there they made a pact to apply to the program for the first time ever the three friends believed they might really have an opportunity to make their dreams come true.’’ This shows that the men are determined because they are now applying themselves to the program and now they believe there is still hope for them and for each of their futures. Another piece of evidence that shows they where determined was that on page 120 there is a picture of Dr. Rameck sitting down with a few papers in is hands the caption across from him states “Here you see Dr. Rameck studying’’ This shows that even though its not all the me in this particular picture each one of them are attempting to become better people and students and to prepare them self’s for the real world.

Jack Brill | 41 comments In the fiction story Holes by Louis Sachar it is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who is the protagonist and main character in the book and a trait that would describe him the best is unlucky. He is unlucky because, one day a boy he didn't know stole a pair of shoes from Clyde Livingston and the boy was running away form the police and threw them at Stanley and Stanley decided to take them and got in trouble for that. in the book Stanley says " the reason why I am so unlucky is because of my no-good-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and I because along time ago he stole a three legged pig from a gypsy and she put a curse on him and the next generations of his family" (43). This quote shows that Stanley Yelnats trait is unlucky because of his great great grandfathers curse.

In the realistic fiction book Checkered Flag Cheater by Will Weaver, the protagonist Trace is a seventeen year old teen racecar driver. One of the things he does every day is because of his hope. Trace is a hopeful teen hoping for a wonderful career. He is a racecar driver that races all over towns and he is trying to be a professional racer soon as he gets older. As of now in the book, he travels fast back to his town where his mom is and visits her. Still, he was mainly traveling back to join the prom. In his age right now, he tries to get good in education and also practice a lot in racing. He is already part of a team and doesn’t have much to do, but practice and have experience. Racing takes up Trace’s time and so he takes online classes. He was doing well, but is trying to get more. One evidence of quote in the book is on page 20 (Note: Pages are wrong because I am using a Nook to read, pages on Nook are shown differently), ““You have to tell me about your online classes.” Trace shrugged and sipped his coffee. “It‘s going all right’?” “I’ve got this teacher I’ve never met who e-mails me all the time. If I miss a deadline, she calls me.” “That’s a good thing,” Trace’s mom said. “I guess, “Trace said.” The other piece of evidence continues on page 21, “His mother silent a moment-as if she was counting to ten. “No, you’re not stupid. All I meant, Trace, is that you seem to be putting racing ahead of your education.”” This evidence show how Trace talks about education to his mother. Even though it seems like Trace has more racing than education, he stills takes online classes for a better career and he was being hopeful. Trace takes online classes because he is always on the road racing. When he goes into college the incoming year, he hopes to get in a college and get more education. That shows he wants more education that can help him with his career. He does it because he is hopeful for his future.

Michael Vu | 24 comments In my fiction book the hand of the devil by Dean Vincent Carter my protagonist name is Ashley reeves who is the main character and works for a science magazine called the missing link I think his trait would be blameful as he blames other people for what he’s done in page 28 he said “I swore out loud, cursing the harbormaster for giving me such a wretched craft.” Ashley had to get to the island to meet up with the doctor but the boat owner was tired and just gave him a boat. Near the middle of the sailing the storm came in and large waves shoved the boat to the island at high speeds. He couldn’t stop it and it crashed into a rock destroying it. He curses the boat owner because if he thinks he got a bad boat.

Elva C. | 40 comments In the fantasy book Incarceron, by Catherine Fisher, the protagonist is Finn. Finn is a teenage boy who is prisoner in this prison called Incarceron. In Incarceron, no prisoner is allowed to leave and the prisoners live in cells.Finn cannot remember his life or anything he had done before he had come to Incarceron. It is also a very dangerous place to be because the people there can treat you as slaves. One trait that best describes Finn is pessimistic. In the prison, there is also a girl Maestra, and she wants to escape from the prison, and be returned to the place where Finn found her. No one has ever escape for the prison before. "In that case we make a deal. I get them to bring the crystal and you release me. Tonight." "It's not that easy..." "I can't!..... They'd skin me alive!" These quotes shows that Finn is thinking of the negative things that can happen to him if he helps Maestra escape from the prison. Instead of thinking of the positive that might happen to him like, he can also escape from the prison too. Finn, thinks of all of the punishments that he will have when he helps Maestra escape, such as, being skinned alive. He thinks that he can't do it and that soon, he will be caught and be punished. This proves that the protagonist Finn is being pessimistic about escaping from a prison.

Steven Lin | 27 comments In the realistic fiction book,Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the protagonist Tally. A trait that would describe her, the best is brave. She sneaked in New Pretty Town, if she was caught bad things would happen. She was not pretty and only pretty people got to go to Pretty Town. She sneaked into Pretty Town just to see her childhood friend. Her childhood friend was a pretty but she wasn't. She was brave enough to sneak into pretty town. She might have suffered serious things if she was caught. On her way there she has gone though many things that might have gotten her caught. She was also embarrassed a lot on the way. She was forced to were a pig costume. A quote that proves that it was dangerous is "A lone figure in the dark. I had to be a warden, waiting for her in the brush." This shows that even thought it was dangerous she still went, proving that she is brave.
