Walter Ullon Good review! The point you make at the end about Moby Dick being a uniquely American Novel, years ahead of its contemporaries in exploring issues of race, diversity, etc., is very similar to that of Nathaniel Philbrick in his slim work "Why Read Moby Dick". Give it a read, it'll definitely expand your appreciation of the novel.

Scott Holmes Yes, a good review. In order to fully understand American literature, Moby Dick is a must read, but then so is Huck Finn. Of the two Moby Dick is the epic and addresses metaphysical issues Twain does not touch. Aside from that, it provides a glimpse of a life style never to be seen again.

Amber Great review! Another work he published, Bartely, only makes Melville's status as a true American novelist only that much more true.
