Janice (jamasc) | 59873 comments Good morning! The slow poke has waken and is catching up on reading everyone's posts.

I will start with Fat Girls and Lawn Chairs, Fat Girls and Lawn Chairs by Cheryl Peck .

But first, I have to go move my office into my apartment, so I will get a later start than everyone else.

Janice (jamasc) | 59873 comments Thanks Judy! You can cheer us on and mediate the fights. :)

BTW, I love love jaxnsmom's new avator for the toppler.

message 55: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59873 comments I wonder how well received it would be if I sat, Toppler book in hand and just pointed - this goes here, that goes there. Careful not to drop anything!

message 56: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments I have had a little snooze and have read a good bit during the night, so I am going to the kitchen to see what goodies I can rustle up since all this talk of food is killing me!

Oh, yes! I had my husband's day planned...golf for him/ reading for me; however, terrible storms are moving into our area, so I just heard him on the phone cancelling his golf game. He will be roaming around the house like a wounded tiger before the day is over! : )

message 57: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Ah, all the food talk here is making me hungry, will go grab my dinner and be back.

Beth (eparks4232) | 2556 comments Switched to Sunset in Kasauli tea. Yummy. Enjoying This Child Will Be Great Memoir of a Remarkable Life by Africa's First Woman President by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and learning lots about Liberia.

I have read that one. Lots in depth talk about sheep and other livestock. : )

message 60: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I'm going to start with Dracula. (As if working retail isn't scary enough!) Hopefully I can finish it before going to sleep tonight, got Climbing the Mango Trees: A Memoir of a Childhood in India sitting out just in case.

message 61: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I think I gained a few pounds just reading about those raspberry and peppermint slices...those sound absolutely delicious!

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Amanda, I will catch up with you on Dracula

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Good morning everyone. It's 11:15am here in rainy Michigan and Almeta and I stayed up most of the night except for maybe 4 hours sleep. We are still plugging along!

Does The Casual Vacancyqualify OR does the book have to be read entirely during the timeline?

But what exactly are digestives? Or is that just a British thing? Chocolate digestives make me think cookies, but I'm just not sure. They were served with tea.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

Digestives are a plain biscuit, made with wheatmeal flour. they are more textured than Rich Tea biscuits, which might be described as a sweet version of a water biscuit. (I'm guessing that's made no sense whatsoever).

You can also get chocolate coated digestives, which are, obviously, even better. I think of cookies as being thicker, softer, cakier biscuits. you can dunk a biscuit, but not dunk a cookie.

IMO an Oreo is an abomination, not a biscuit.

In the UK there is a tax implication to being a cake or a biscuit - biscuits were 0 tax rated (as an essential) whereas cake (as a luxury) was at full rate VAT. hence the court case over a jaffa cake being a biscuit, not a cake, despite its name.

the only true definition is what happens when they go stale. biscuits go soggy, whereas cake goes hard/dry. I've never had biscuits or cake around long enough to check the definitions are correct.

message 67: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments That's what Almeta and I had a midnight: tea and digestives! Taste like cookies to me!

message 68: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2556 comments Switched to A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking on audio while playing with Katie (age 4). Not ideal but what I have. Making bead necklaces at present. No biscuits and cake, but consuming much tea.

It was very good IMO characters were well developed and adult but could have been any town any where.

message 73: by Pragya (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Oh, Beverly, I'm so sorry I missed your post on individual reporting threads. Thank goodness Judy caught it!

Shirley - to qualify for the Toppler, a book must be started and finished during the Toppler. So if you started The Casual Vacancy before midnight last night it won't count. I've been hearing so much about this book, what did you think of it?

Thanks I didn't think it would so no problem. No way was I not finishing it when it was down to 2 + hours left.

message 77: by [deleted user] (new)

what's the rule on page numbers?
If the book I've read has 276 numbered pages of story and then 12 pages of forward, acknowledgements etc and is listed on GR as having 288 pages, which do I put down?

message 78: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Robin's not participating this time? I am missing her, what with all the classics around.

message 79: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments LOL Amber, the stack looks good. I will be reading two of those too. And you do make sense inspite of the coffee. ;)

What is that 10+ days overdue book?

message 80: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2556 comments Amber, he he. Caffeine is good.

I am seriously thinking of begging my hubby to watch Katie this afternoon and let me go to a laundromat to do laundry this afternoon. Dryer is on fritz and I could use the time sitting there to read unmolested.....

It's my understanding that we report the actual number of pages read. So add the 12 pages.

message 82: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4526 comments Good afternoon,
I'm coming late to the party but I just got back from the library to pick up some books.
I got: Library An Unquiet History by Matthew Battles
Go Green, Live Rich 50 Simple Ways to Save the Earth and Get Rich Trying by David Bach Food Rules An Eater's Manual by Michael Pollan Near a Thousand Tables A History of Food by Felipe Fernández-Armesto Dracula by Bram Stoker The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier .

I need the Treat points so I can read another orange book. I have to say figuring this one out was difficult for me. I think my head exploded a couple of time but I'm good now. Good thing I'm taking off Tuesday to wait for the oil burner guy to come clean the furnace so I'll just sit and read. What a hardship, right?
Think I'll start with a little H.G. Wells.
Good reading everyone.

message 83: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Roz, jealous of your off day. :p

Yay for Dracula, I will be reading it too.

Happy reading.

message 84: by Jane Reads (new)

Jane Reads | 297 comments My daughter has been home from college for Fall Break since Thursday. She left not long ago, so I haven't done any OcToppler reading yet.

My hubby and I will be in the North Carolina mountains (Asheville) tomorrow through Friday, for our 31st anniversary. I will be reading some in the car, and some in our hotel room, but may not be online much.

I will definitely be back online for discussions and posting of pages read, etc, on Friday evening and Saturday.

message 85: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4526 comments Gotta say, it's a near perfect day. Reading a good book, eating crackers, cheese and grapes (provided by hubby), and watching football on tv. I have to keep track of my standing in the office football pool. I may have to start a load of laundry to justify my status as domestic goddess.

message 86: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59873 comments It's 5 hours later and my house is quiet! We emptied my office in record time. I think we were there for 1 hour. Then, we hauled all my office stuff into my apartment (in the rain). It took a little longer to haul it in, dry it off, and set it up. I ordered pizza in to thank my kids for helping. And now they've gone.

It's time to crack open my first book.

Janice (jamasc) | 59873 comments Judy, I had to laugh at your comment about having a nap because I was just thinking that! I'll read for a bit, if I can ever get caught up on here, and then I'll go for a nap.

Jane Reads | 297 comments April wrote: I was also thinking about laundry. Then, I thought, "Naw". :)

Unfortunately, I must do more than think about it. My 1st load is in the dryer, 2nd load in the washer, and loads 3, 4, and 5 are on deck.

ugh

I am a "dinosaur" without an MP3 player, so I'm not sure how well that would work.

message 96: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Now that I am almost done with the review book I was reading (50 pages left), I think I will start with my first toppler book before going to bed (it's 1am and tomorrow's a work day, so wouldn't be able to read as much as I would like). Now which one to start with?

Ah...First Grave on the Right, here I come.

message 99: by Pragya (new)

Jane Reads | 297 comments Judy wrote: "I download books to my computer (the library offers free downloads) or listen on my cd player. I haven't made to MP3 land yet either. :-)"

I got an audiobook novella from the library, for the beach-read challenge this summer. I listened to it on my car cd player, as I was driving to and from work. When I got home, though, I didn't know how to take it inside to play it on another cd player without starting over.

My computer is desktop, and my cd players are not portable, so I think I will have the same problem if I start an audiobook in one room and want to re-locate.
