Josh something..He's Lana Weinberger's guy for most part of the series..He pretends to like Mia..just so he could get some sort of publicity or something of that sort..I've read it ages ago too :)

Personally Mia needed Michael at the end of the day I loved this book/ series and think it appeals to a certain audience of course not everyone is going to like the story yet why was it so successful ?
