Welcome aboard, Amy. Yes I saw Becoming Jane, too, and I agree with your assessment. Actually, having a little background on Jane's world, will help us better understand her books, so it's a good thing we saw that movie..LOL...Yes, we are sort of loosely staying within the boundaries of 2 chapters a day. A slow read, and sharing of ideas, considering the language can be difficult for most of us.
Yes, chapter 7 -8 will work today.
I'm enjoying the movie so far, although I don't care for who they have, the unknown (at least to me) playing Mr Darcy.
James McEvoy is gorgeous.. just to add in my 2 cents. lol.I personally enjoyed the book so much better than the movie. But I did watch both versions, and I think the one with Colin Firth is better. Although, the other Darcy was much more appealing looks wise.
But back to the book - I don't know why but I find Darcy's arrogance appealing. I can't really imagine him being interesting any other way. He's a man of great importance and wealth, he can't act like a wuss lol.
I guess it takes some adjustment for me to read Jane Austen's book. I am a skimmer.. but with her book I find that I have to read every single word to understand the whole story. So it's good that we take it slowly..
It's weird but actually reading the conversations aloud help me in understanding it better...just a random thought..LOL
BriansGirl: I've read up to the end of chapter 6. I still find this confusing. In fact, at the end of Chapter 6, I had trouble even figuring out who was talking. At some point some other girl (other than Lizzie) wandered outta nowhere and entered the conversation. Or so I think. lol I just realized I only read half of chapter 6 yesterday. The girl that was talking to Mr. Darcy at the end of Chapter 6 is Miss Bingley, one of Bingley's sisters.

I liked the movie, so that should mean the book gets better! lol
Just finished Chapter 7, and I have to admit it is strange reading the machinations of a mother's mind in ensuring a daughter's good match. Having your daughter ride in the rain, so she will be forced to stay overnight was, in my modern sensibilities, a little too much, but considering how dire a poor unmarried woman's future can be in these times, we can understand her motivations.I can't also help noticing the little hints the author is dropping in the way Darcy is starting to see Elizabeth...very subtle, but its there.
"The former(meaning Darcy) was divided between admiration of the brilliancy which exercise had given to her complexion, and doubt as to the occasion's justifying her coming so far alone."
One thing I got from the movie that helps me in reading the book is that.. When a lady is called 'Miss Bennett', it's referred to the oldest daughter (in this case Jane). The other daughter will be called by the full name like 'Miss Elizabeth Bennett'.Also for the Bingleys, he has 2 sister but only one who is unmarried which is Caroline. The married one is called 'Mrs. Hurst'.
Good input, Amy. That will help in the reading.Finished Chapter 8, and I can only be aghast at the world this people live in. Such snobbery and artificiality. How they can be nice to the same person, and then talked bad about her, once she is out of earshot.
I agree. And it's sad in the sense to see that the life of the women is only evolved around when they will get married. It seems to be the only main purpose of her mom. How sad!

I'm thinking of when Jane was sick and visiting, Lizzie came to see her, and then all the rest of the sisters and the mother were introduced at once to take them home. Does tend to get a tad confusing though doesn't it.
Now that I watched the movie today, I'm anxious to pick the book back up again and see if it makes more sense now.
Some of the spelling is what makes it hard to read.shew = show
chuse = choose
Anyone know what a loo table is? They were playing cards. (The only loo I have heard of is slang for a british toilet. lol)
Reading tomorrow's chapters early. This is from the end of Chapter 10. I've reread it numerous times but don't understand the first part of the sentence:
"You used us abominably ill," answered Mrs. Hurst, "in running away without telling us that you were coming out."
I love how Darcy keeps finding opportunities to see Elizabeth, and yet she keeps trying to find opportunities to avoid him. too funny.
Just slightly off topic... has anyone else heard about this book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies The Classic Regency Romance -- Now With Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem!? I heard it's not out yet. I'm not into zombies so won't read it and I'd hate to ruin my impression of the original, but since many of you are into PNR and UF I was wondering what you think of it.
Work had been busy, so I wasn't able to get any reading done. I stop at chapter 8 last time, and will try to get a couple of chapters in today. How about the rest? What chapters are you in? Just checking in.
Yz wrote: "No problem..I'll catch up somehow..LOL..So is the book getting better for you?"
Yes, but mostly because I was able to figure out the plot from the movie. Even then, there were a couple lines in the movie that I didn't get. (One the director translates in the movie commentary.)
I'm ahead as well. I read from ebook so I'm not sure if the chapter is the same. But I'm in Chapter 11 of Part 2. It's getting better. I guess after reading for a while I start to get used to the language. I didn't realize that Elizabeth has several interests in men. hehe..
I'm going slow here, just finished chapters 9 and 10.So far, this much, I can say, it must be hard living with Elizabeth's family. I would probably die a thousand deaths in embarassment at her mother's antics.
I also find the subtle changes in Elizabeth and Darcy's characters fascinating, how Lizzie instinctively defended him in a conversation, and his refusal to now speak ill of her during conversation with Miss Bingley.
Now, to continue reading...LOL..pesky thing like a "job" keeps interrupting..LOL
Read up to Chapter 16. Two gentlemen that will be part of Lizzie's life have been introduced: Mr. Collins and Mr. Wickham.
You've caught up to me as I read ahead. I better start again. lol (I've been catching up with other books).
Ah.. Yes, Mr. Collins and Mr. Wickham. It's more interesting now that there are other candidates for Lizzie.
I was going to do this and have been receiving the chapters but have not read a single one! I'm just too busy right now. Maybe I'll get to it eventually.
No worries, Lori. Same here. What I did is create a folder in my email just for it, and just transferred the daily emails there, and when I have some free time at work, then I read.
I never really liked Mr. Wickam, he didn't do it for me like darcy did. Plus the things that come out later about Wickam irritated me. But I don't want to say too much since some aren't that far into it yet. Sorry if this msg looks weird, I'm on my blackberry and in class not listening to the teacher lol
Finished Chapter 17. I'm with you Jess on Mr. Wickham. Even though he seems nice to everyone, there is just something sleazy about how he bad-mouthed Darcy and played Elizabeth's attention. Also, I can definitely understand Elizabeth's reaction to Mr. Collins' pursuit of her. There is just something icky when a guy you are not interested in is pursuing you, and you still have to be polite about it. *shudders*
I know it was the time period and all.. but the fact that he was their cousin weirded me out!!! And also that he was a little dumb.. and quite annoying haha. But ick, they were related... ickkk!
How is everyone doing with P&P?I find one thing odd that sisters will talk about their parent by using 'My father or My mother' to each other. Whenever, I read the conversation between Jane and Lizzie. Is that odd?
I found it more strange that the wife calls her husband Mr. Bennett in conversations with him. If talking to others it would make sense, but not when speaking directly to him.
I've been moved workwise last Monday, so I'm settling in and have an increased workload, so I don't know when I can pick up reading P&P again. I've put on hold my dailylit subscription for it, and will resume it once i have the time. But it's cool that you guys are continuing on. I really want to do the reread, but when I'm home I prefer to read my challenge books..LOL..
I understand. I will say it's the slowest for me in reading this book as well. I know it's TMI but mostly I read it via my iphone during my bathroom time.. hehe.. About 2 chapters per day. It's getting more interesting with Lydia's situation. Drama.. drama..
Briansgirl wrote: "I found it more strange that the wife calls her husband Mr. Bennett in conversations with him. If talking to others it would make sense, but not when speaking directly to him. "Yeah.. I guess it's the whole formal thing.
I just dislike Mrs. Bennett a lot. I feel like she is very shallow but then it seems most of the women in that period were the same. All she thought about was marriage for her daughters!
Amy wrote: "Briansgirl wrote: "I found it more strange that the wife calls her husband Mr. Bennett in conversations with him. If talking to others it would make sense, but not when speaking directly to him. "..."
I agree that Mrs. Bennett was annoying, but she only thought about marrying her daughters off because she wanted them provided for. During that time, land and wealth couldn't be passed to daughters. If they didn't get married, they would essentially be homeless and poor.
She herself married for love, and Mr. Bennett didn't have money. She was trying to help her daughters to have a better life than she had.
I can understand her reasoning behind her behavior, but she was still quite an overbearing character.
I agree with you, Jess, but I feel, that if she is my mother, I would have died like a million times in shame with some of her antics.Still, she does have her girls' interests in her heart.
Oh I would have died of shame as well!! When she goes on and on in front of Mr. Darcy about how wealthy he must be!! That's like the equivalent of my mom taking out the naked baby pics, lol.
I can see your point. Plus I guess during that time period that's all they can do to help secure their kids' future. ************** SPOILER **************************
I found that it's also weird that when Lydia ran away and Mrs. Bennett was worrying about if Lydia will have nice outfit for her wedding. Talking about perspective. :)

Today is Chapter 7 & 8. We started last saturday and those with dailylit set it up to receive 2 chapters a day. I'm keeping up with them in my regular book. Even though I find the language confusing, I can take 5 minutes to read 2 short chapters a day to keep up. Of course, nothing says you can't sprint ahead in your reading if you get into it Amy.
