Mitzi, go ask a blogger who is a member of your generation what it feels like to have her work stolen. It sucks no matter how old you are.

Okay, I know what I am about to say may ruffle some feathers, but I am not saying it to get anyone upset. I'm saying it because it is my honest opinion.

I think some people create things based on self-serving motivations. Its like they are saying, "Look at me, look at how brilliant I am!".

To me, a person's motivations come through in their work. Now, if their motivation is that they want to share what is beautiful inside them (their creativity and their vision) then the result of that work is usually so much more meaningful than work that is motivated by ego-boosting impulses.

So in that line, I don't see why someone cares if their work is stolan. It's like that whole Napster thing several years ago. Isn't it better to share your work with millions for free instead of it only being exposed to a few who pay a fee?

I think intellectual property is just another way of people using the profit motive to taint creative expression.

Call me a hippy or an idealist or a dreamer, but didn't John Lennon have a point when he sang about "Imagine there's no possesions"?

I do think that Mitzi has a point about intellectual property not mattering to the younger generation.

Mitztbob-
I'm coming by to rob your house and get a new computer (tv, camera, jewelry or food in your 'fridge) because I don't see why you would care if I stole it.

Cynthia, my native tongue is spanish, so sometimes I slip into a little Spanglish when I talk and when I write. I hope it doesn't bother you too much. I try to speak correct, but sometimes old habits are hard to break up.

We can be, but we don't have to be. I can go for a walk in the park, and have people go past me that are plugged in, but that doesn't mean I am, anymore than I am playing the ultimate frisbee game that I walk by."

Again, I agree. My remarks were just in response to comments made in message #70 which I agree with. The influence of technology runs deep. We're both old enough to remember the hunt for a phone booth if we needed to make a call, and being able to look at someone and see what book they were reading, or sitting next to someone on the bus and not knowing what music they liked. So when I say "we're plugged in" I don't mean any of us, just the world in general.

What kind of music do you like?

message 112: by [deleted user] (new)

A Hispanic girl named Mitzi? Culturally speaking, that's interesting.

People create what they create, Mitz, it's THEIR right to give it away or sell it. They have a right to make a living, to feed their family by the product of their efforts without being some money grubbing ego whore. If writing is their work, and people go around stealing it, how do you expect them to take care of their own basic needs? Not to mention the fact that it simply isn't your RIGHT to take whatever you want just because it is there.

message 113: by [deleted user] (new)

You make a good argument Amelia, but the problem with intellectual property is that so much of it is borrowed or stolen or at least influenced by something else.

You can name almost any book you are reading right now and I bet there are dozens or even hundreds of snippets from that book that are based on ideas from other places.

So does that mean that the author of that book has to site every single experience, every single example, every single influence that went into writing their book?

At some point there is a comunity of knowledge that cannot be horded over by one person. Once it is released into the world, it belongs to all of us.

Seriously, Mr. Amy asks me things sometimes and I don't know the answer, so I just say, "I'll ask the nerds tomorrow, I bet LG will know!" :) There are lots of really amazing people in the is group I am glad to know.

That's why you can copyright a pattern of words or notes, not ideas. Yes, we're all products of everything that has come before us, but each of us experiences it in different ways. How we express those feelings is ours and no one else's and theft is never okay.

Btw, your argument about ego or money driving creative output? Pleh. Shakespeare wrote for money and to flatter the Queen's ego. Does that make his work any less incredible? No, no it does not.

And the beauty bloggers to whom I was referring are all people who do what they do because they love their subjects, and get excited about sharing with other people. They still put in long hours of work writing reviews, comparing prices, testing products and taking pictures. Just because your uninformed opinion is that they are egotists does not mean that they should have their work stolen.

Personally, I find Mitt Romney repugnant, but I don't think that gives anyone the right to break into his office and steal his laptop.

Jammies Oh, and P.S., Mitzi, you're not a hippie, or a dreamer, or an idealist. All of those people actually care about others, something which you show zero signs of.

So people have to adjust.

What do you mean they have to adjust? Maybe technoloby is actually propelling society toward evolving away from the ownnership mentality. Maybe people need to start adjusting to that instead of trying to fight the wave of progress.

I was starting to wander if I should start taking it personal that you never answer any question I ask you.

I think I understand now though, that you are under a false assumption that I am interested in a peeing contest (I don't like to use curse words).

I assure you though that I have no interest in a p&%#ing contest. I simply think you are an intelligent woman and I am interested in hearing your ideas Bunny.

I know. I was embarrassed that I let my temper get the better of me in that one incident with James (James and I have had private conversations - I hope he doesn't mind his name being brought into this thread, but since you already brought him into it, just let me say that he has a special ability to bring out the harsh side of my personality). I am far from a perfect creature. I have no problem admitting that. Occasionally I will use curse words, but I really try not to. I appreciate you pointing that incident with Jamesout to me. It will help me improve and help me in my efforts to prevent that kind of potty mouth from occurng again.

Sarah | 13814 comments I am so glad I wasn't here when she said that all babies need a father. Or that artists are somehow diminished by wanting to get paid for their art. Do you think that your doctor shouldn't get paid? Your mechanic? How come I need to give my music away? A lot of your favorite musicians and writers wouldn't have time to make their art if they had to put all their time into making a living by other means.

Good luck with your first date with a "female." You might try on the word "woman" before the date. When you go around saying you're dating a "female" you sound like you are possibly not a human.

Jammies You're welcome, it's good to have you back. :)

And Bun, about your question--I don't think we would normally have this discussion, no. I think because all of us are adults, we've gotten over the idea that our personal rights outweigh everything, and as individuals we recognize that.

That said, it's an interesting topic, and I agree with you that how we handle copyright issues in the electronic age needs to be updated.

although that is good to know. 3 public warnings is pretty fair. has that happened often in here?

now Bun's "she'll" is making me wonder if Mitzi was that character Robert from many months ago.

It has happened a couple of times. Not recently. The ones I can think of were people who were directly insulting others.
