Evie, I think every child deserves a father. That is just my opinion. And it is my body, so if I have a child, I want it to have a father also.

@ Zardoz. You sound like you hate the internet or something -lol!
I'm just glad I can't remember what the world was like before the internet. It has always been there in my life. It must have been weird back in the old days when you elders didn't have it.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful. Its just hard for people of my age to imagine life without it. No google, no you tube? Maybe it has been a bad thing because people don't have to be so creative now in order to get entertainment.

message 54: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yes, there is something added to your life now -- but also a lot lost. I also have a hard time imagining what life was like before instantaneous global communication.

message 56: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh no argument with that. I make it a point to disconnect every so often. But the world has been irrevocably changed by the Interwebs. Well, at least until Armageddon.

Turn off my phone and go for a walk!?!
Where?
Where can you go nowdays and not have some kind of information/commnication presence felt?

The influence of the technology runs deep. I may go for a walk, but everyone I pass has their nose buried in some electronic device.

message 58: by Michael (new)

Michael BunWat wrote: "Look, I like technology. I'm a big fan. But where can I go nowdays and not have the presence of information/communication? Any place I like."

I don't disagree, but I don't see it as that simple. In the city it's nearly impossible to go for a walk without the intrusion of information/communication and technology, and it's getting more and more difficult out in the suburbs and parks as well. We have some beautiful parks here, places that are so well maintained they almost border on magical, but it's still not uncommon to hear a plane fly overhead, or a car horn, or, in passing, another walker's tinny headphones, or worst of all, someone walking and talking on their phone.

Its getting to the point that unless you want to go live in a cave in the woods like the Unibomber or something, then you are gong to have numerous enteractions with electronical information devices all day long, every day!

And jJust image what it will be like in 50 or 100 years?

Not sure what else it could mean, Bun.

Bun, I agree with the rest though. I can unplug myself and enjoy life and the outdoors without having to find a place on the planet that resembles the bronze age. As long as I am unplugged, that's what matters.

Its funny, but plagiarizing, intellectual property, music sampling don't seem to matter to my generation like they do to the older generations. I think my generation realizes that we are all connected now. It doesn't matter who the information "belongs" to. What matters is that the information is easy to get at.

Ed/Mitzi, I'm not sure you understand the word "funny"

What makes you think that I feel "plagiarizing, intellectual property, music sampling" matters more or less than you do? I'm pretty sure I just admitted to doing it. I've downloaded the crap out of some music and movies too...illegally. Shhh!

Well, I am not a typical example of my generation. I mostly read books from authors from older generations. And I mostl listen to music from artists from older generations.
And I don't watch much TV at all. But I will be watching the Presidental debate tonight. I am one of the few voters in America who is still undecided. I'm interested in hearing Romney explain his economic plan a little better.

Ah, I see. Please accept my apologies, that was a gross oversight on my part."

I must have missed this part of the thread. Did I post something that got Z upset? If I did, I didn't do it on purpose.
Btw Z, you have a message board? Is it here on Good Reads? Would it be okay if I came and joined. I'm really not a troll even though I am often accused of being one. I just say weird things sometimes and people seem to get bent out of shape over them. But I never say anything to intentionally hurt someone. If someone is attacking me or accusing me, then I might defend myself, but generally I just ignore them.

Michael BunWat wrote: "Michael, I don't get it. Why is it necessary to find some sort of pre Raphaelite ferny glen in which you can't see an airplane passing overhead or hear the voices of other human beings in order to go for a simple walk? I think that's just romanticising. I certainly don't think you have to find a physical space entirely free of technology in order to take a time out from it. You just have to find a mental space free of it, and that's up to us, not the tech. In fact, really we have more control over our tech now than we ever did."

It’s not necessary at all and I agree with you that it's our responsibility to find a mental space free of the intrusions. I’ve learned to tune everything out when I’m out for a walk, whether it’s at a park or just around the block, and I enjoy myself. And I suppose there are people in the places I walk who might feel that my putzing with a camera and the clicks of the shutter is technology intruding on their enjoyment but that's their issue to deal with and tune out. I was just commenting in response to the earlier comment that it’s difficult to go places nowadays where the influence of technology isn’t felt. We're plugged in everywhere.

We can be, but we don't have to be. I can go for a walk in the park, and have people go past me that are plugged in, but that doesn't mean I am, anymore than I am playing the ultimate frisbee game that I walk by.
