Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Ugh I started another book last night but I'm not into it either.

I think I'm in the mood for something sightly more fluffy and upbeat, since it's summer. But not necessarily sappy.

I was having this problem the other day, Claire. After reading Anne Bishop, Jim Butcher and CJ Roberts this month, not much else compared. I did read a few pretty good books, aside from those this month, though.

I finished A Soul For Trouble (Soulbearer, #1) by Crista McHugh last night and enjoyed it even though the heroine was quite fickle.

Starting The Bone Doll's Twin (The Tamír Triad, #1) by Lynn Flewelling

By light and fluffy do you mean funny too? You could start a Molly Harper series ... you don't have to read them in order and there are around 3 series I think. I prefer her latest Half moon hollows that starts with Driving Mr. Dead ... then there is The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires, followed by the latest A Witch's Guide to Kisses and Curses. I like her naked werewolf series two, there are only 2 in that series so far.
It all starts with her nice girl series with Jane though, she gets turned after being mistaken for a deer by a drunk redneck and being shot.... Oh, and that day she gets fired from her librarian job.
Not everybody will find the funny though ... I will say that I laugh @ her books as much as I laughed at Jane True books, if not more. They read fast too, not saying much since I tend to read fast anyways. For me the funny isn't over done, but I have a weird sense of humor.

Oh, and any romance is, to me, on the funny side and not the main focus of the book/series and not sappy as hell. (I tend to skip sappy books though.)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments @Llaph Yes, something like Jane True. I guess the series is just stuck in my head. I'll check out Molly Harper.

I didn’t really get the first book, I am still kind of confused. This is what happens when I run out of books to read….

I really liked Driving Mr. Dead … maybe I will read it again.

Lannister and I have read it. I can't remember if everyone else has or not. I need to check their lists. We finally have a release date and blurb for book 2! I'm so excited!

message 2809: by Margo (new)

Margo | 663 comments Yeah, I've read Angelfall, but I didn't like it much. Dystopia is really not my favorite genre so it wasn't to my taste. But good news for those of you who have read it. They are making a movie out of it, so soon (2014 or early 2015) you will be able to watch it in cinemas :)

YEEEEEAH! I mean, susan managed so many creepy scenes, with humor, romance and action in such a short book... and the heroine is amazing. Can't wait for the next one too :)

awn @Margo, I think it will be only 2015. but it suck's it wasn't to your taste :/

I lol a lot when I read the queen Betsy series by Mary Janice Davidson mostly at the ridiculousness of Betsy .The books are also fast reads but the last two were a little dark and different tho.q

message 2812: by Amber (new)

Amber (mixiemoon) | 233 comments Finished Sealed with a Curse (Weird Girls, #1) by Cecy Robson . Not sure what it was that didn't sit right with me about the book. I think the relationships that just popped up and were serious overnight kind of distracted and didn't feel right to me.

message 2813: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments re: Angelfall
I loved that book and I usually don't read much YA. The movie can go diaf though since I rarely if ever saw a movie made from a book that I liked.
I like dystopianish books for the most part, but it is not a serious got to read this sort of thing to me. I tend to compare them to awesome books that I have already read....
Ooo blurb on the next book--going to check it out now.

@amber:
I have read the first few books of that series, but it got to silly.weird to me so I didn't read past the 4th book I think. Prolly because I couldn't really relate to Betsy ... she is a girly girl ... I so am not. Jane Jameson is more of a girl that I can relate to. Plus the whole redneck/south thing really makes me laugh because, sadly, it is so true.

message 2814: by Amber (new)

Amber (mixiemoon) | 233 comments @Llaph
I haven't read the Jane Jameson books so I couldn't compare. I completely understand about Betsy being too girly I laughed at how rediculous she was especially about her shoes.

I highly reccomend anything by Molly Harper. It looks like I am a massive fangirl right about now too ... lol.
I don't get shoes or purses ... I am happy with my tennis shoes. I am a simple person, my sisters though love expensive shoes. Weirdly, my sister Angie collects comforters, bras, and shoes ... figure that out.

Apocalyptic Moon by Eva Gordon

I read this book a while back, I normally don’t like zombie books too much, but I loved this one. It is a mix of scary/funny. You know how it is, you read a book that is not normally one that you would pick and it ends up being an awesome read.

message 2816: by ♥ Ashleigh ♥ (new)

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) its taking me forever to read Ice Forged by Gail Z. Martin so I might put it down for a bit and get a head start on Where She Went (If I Stay, #2) by Gayle Forman before it has to go back to the library.

LOL, I do know how you feel. Chess has to be the most self-sabotaging character I've ever come across. Just when things seem to be going right, her complete lack of self-esteem wakes up and ruins things. Sometimes I feel angry with her, but other times I feel so sorry for her cos she's been through some hideous stuff and she's a mess.

She's definitely one of the most interesting UF characters though, and I've actually teared up once or twice at her scenes with Terrible and that's not something that happens often when I read UF.

Amber, I read this too and I did like it, but I agree about some of it seeming unrealistic.

I was annoyed with the relationship with the sisters. It felt like they had no other friends beyond each other. They all lived together, they worked together and they hung out together. That's just not realistic. Even the closest families need a break from each other now and then. And I agree with you about how they went out that night and all met guys at the same time. That kind of thing just doesn't happen. It was all too neat and perfect and it makes you roll your eyes.

I felt it's a series with a lot of potential and I will probably read the next one to see how it develops, but I think the author's hurting the story with her sisterly relationships. It doesn't feel real to me.

Mon, I loved this book! And I say that as someone who doesn't read YA. I hadn't realised that the release date for book two had been announced so I'm totally excited for that!!

Roll on November! :D

I am in agreement, it is rare for me to tear up with any book too. To me Chess feels so much more because of it. :)

message 2821: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I've never really liked YA books, and I really hate dystopian novels. I'm not a fan.

message 2822: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Llaph, I think it's because Chess goes from such highs (quite literally!) to real lows that you're on the emotional rollercoaster with her and everything affects you so much more. I want to scream at her sometimes when she's screwing up things with Terrible AGAIN!

Do we have any idea when the next Downside book is due? It's been a while, I think.

Claire, I feel exactly the same way! I haven't even read Hunger Games since I don't like YA or Dystopian, and yet somehow I was persuaded to try Angelfall, and I was slightly amazed by how much I liked it!

message 2823: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments It sounds like I'd hate the Downside Ghosts series too. Not really my cup of tea.

I'm really not in the mood for anything dark right now. I have to go on the hunt for something good. I'm almost tempted to start another Demonica book, but that's probably because my habit when I've started a series is to read all the books available to me. I did that with Dark Hunter and got all the way to book 11/12 before I got burned out =p

message 2824: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments @ lannister:
GR lists the next as coming out July 4th, but it has no title or blurb so who knows? There is supposed to be a shortish story coming out from Terrible's pov.
I think it is mainly because it is a believable high and low ... not something just switched between extremes. Hard to explain!

@claire:
I gave my reccomendation! I have others, but they tend to lean towards the down right silly and not just funny. I save those for when I really am feeling crappy.
So many genres....

I still say you should set up some sort of randomizer picker and use that.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Still haven't started reading anything new. I feel vaguely empty

message 2834: by Margo (new)

Margo | 663 comments @Claire - Well to be honest, I was a little disappointed by Tempest Rising. I liked it, but there was too much romance and not enough action for my liking.

I enjoyed Tracking the Tempest. It was funny and there was less romance and more action, but still painfully predictable.

I really liked Tempest's Legacy for the same reason I enjoyed book 2, except, I have to say that I really didn't expect the ending like that. So that's a huge plus.

Well for now that's it. I only just started Eye of the Tempest late last night, so I don't have an opinion yet.

message 2835: by Claire (new)
