Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Zeenat, I've read maybe half a dozen of the Sookie books, and I'll probably read some more at some point.

I like them OK, but they're what I classify as a 'hangover read'. Basically, they are very light and non-demanding and you could read them half-asleep in bed whilst feeling ill. Now, that's not automatically a bad thing, because sometimes all you want is a completely non-challenging read, but don't expect anything deep. And Sookie annoys me sometimes.

But I'll enjoy hearing your thoughts on them. :)

message 2452: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Gaaaaah don't do it, all you will get is annoyance and irritation from it. I didn't mind the first few books, but after I think it was 8 or something, the book where all of the characters did a wtf-flip-out-of-character jump it sucks.
That is just what I think though. You might come up with a different opinion and it wouldn't be fair for me to say how much it sucks....

pffft @ the show, the only thing they have in common are names.

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments I could use brainless reads to a) up my reading challenge count b) after GRRM those are needed! I also plan on reading the new Khaled Hosseni book so that will be heavy I'm sure.

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments For a read where you don't have to think much I like the love at stake series ... no thinking, silly, and sometimes a good giggle. One of the other series that I like to read for mindless fun is sandra hills viking II series, I have a weakness for timetravel--and her books can be down right silly at times.

hrm a lot of silly there

Both of the series read pretty fast, there is another but I can't think of it right now. :/

message 2456: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I 'member now (I consulted my records [yes I have a record of that, don't ask]), and I was reminded of lynsay sands's argeneau series.
It seems as though I read a lot of silly books. I need to read smart books again or something. I put a game of thrones back on my reader in a different format, hopefully this time I can keep going with it. I know parts are interesting, but damn apparently I am lazy. What a surprise!

message 2457: by Jax (new)

Jax | 831 comments I agree with Duane and Lannister...
I've also read all the books:), Fun, light reads for the most part... one or two minor incidents which sort of bugged me, but nothing major enough that I stopped reading.

As for the TV series... I agree with Duane 100%!
The first season wasn't too bad... they followed pretty close to the book...
Then season 2... and yes, I was sucker enough to HOPE they'd fix it for season 3 - they didn't... they made it worse!

message 2458: by Arushi (new)

Arushi | 3652 comments @Llaph - I am not sure if it has that much to do with lazy. Initially I had the audio boo for game of thrones and it made me fall asleep every single time. They do the accents but that made it all even more confusing. So after listening to the prologue four times and still not having made sense of it, I got myself the ebooks.

I'd say just bear with the book because it really is worth it. Accents and all.

message 2459: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments I agree about the show... I saw first season (even though I don't remember much) and I think I saw 2nd season's first or so episode and gave up. I remember thinking the show didn't feel right.

Now that I finished book 1, I can see why. True Blood felt really dark and gritty. More gothic than UF. But the first book felt much more like a Light UF read. It was a solid first book. I was disappointed in the supporting cast. They felt blah.

I doubt the series will reach favorite proportions... But it's good.

Reading Living Dead in Dallas (Sookie Stackhouse, #2) by Charlaine Harris and rereading Tempest Rising (Jane True, #1) by Nicole Peeler

Mello ❣ Illium ✮Harry✮ ☀Myrnin☀ Torin Ichimaru | 2012 comments I didn't mind too much the way they handled True Blood until season 4 when they completely changed Marni's character and just basically started screwing up the character's personalities so damned badly. Season 5 was even worse. And I'll still probably watch season 6, though I have no idea why.

I'm still reading Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre and also started Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels, #1) by Anne Bishop because I needed to read another Anne Bishop book right away. I am greatly enjoying both.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments @Arushi, I like the audiobooks of Game of Thrones. I'm listening to them with my hubby (it takes about a year to get one done but whatever) and we're on the last one. They changed narrator and the guy did not bother to do the accents...frustrating. Gratefully Roy Dotrice came back for book 5.

A for brainless reading...I'm reading Moon (New Species, #10) by Laurann Dohner . :)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments @ arushi:
My audio books are from the NLS.library of congress talking book club yadda yadda ... they usually have their own readers for books. Except if a publisher donates the audio books (like what had happen for me for the first 3 toby day books and her encrypted book).
They tend to have the same sort of people reading similiar genres ... like there is one for YAs, a few for romances, and for fantasy. Seriously the tend to sound like pompous professors giving a lecture, which is why I could not get into the few I had listened to. Those, thank god, I had in a different format to listen too. I like their readers for other genres ... the other ones are hard to listen/understand. Even if I had slowed them down to 0 instead of the 10 I listen to them to.

@mello:
I really love that trilogy. I think it has a lot of sentimental value to me too, because of the times I had read it/first bought it. Hrmm kind of like when you hear a certain song it reminds you of something?

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Ohh yes and happy day, I had complained the other day about kindle app still not working for my iphone. I was looking through my rss reader and guess what I found? A press release for a new kindle iphone app. Now to get a stinking kindle book to try it out on (plus the time to) since my ARCs did not work, apparently it doesn't support pdf formats. Stupid buggers....

message 2464: by Arushi (new)

Arushi | 3652 comments @Llaph - that makes sense then. At least pompous professors tend to be easy to understand. Well.. as long as you get a chance to read all that you want to, it is indeed good.

Started reading Roadkill

message 2465: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments I couldn't decide whether to give the last book 2 or 3 stars. Went with 3, since I want to keep reading. But these characters are annoying and DUMB. lol I'll read a few more (I think I put up to 8 on my to read list) but the characters better start getting interesting, and fast.

Speaking of fast, yeah these books move rather quickly. I already finished the first two, and I started the first one at night last night. I can see why everyone else said it was a fast read... If I actually read the whole series... It could take me only 4 days... LOL!

Starting Club Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #3) by Charlaine Harris

message 2466: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments Oh and for her romances: I can't stand bill. He needs a serious punch in the face. I don't think I disliked him this much on the show. I don't remember Eric... but as people talk about Eric and Bill all the time when it comes to the show, I guess that's the main love triangle? god... the one I do like is Sam, and he's the one I liked form the show too. But no one talks about him. So I guess he fails to be important at some point. With 13 books though, I'm guessing other loves show up too...

(And no I didn't read the spoilers! I'm avoiding them like the plague. I don't even pay attention to the show spoilers just in case something get's ruined!)

I am surprised by the amount of raunchiness in the books. I guess it did become an HBO show... lol

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments @ arushi:

I put up with a lot to read books ... I don't have to put up with that if I have another choice to it. :x It is too bad that the narrator for that series is a tard, I rather like one of the narrators who had done the Sword of Truth series. I loved his accents and voices he did for the characters, it was so easy to follow who and what was talking.
I am just happy kindle will work now, don't even know if I will buy books to read on it yet. Just having the choice makes me happy.

@ zeenat:
I'd like to hear your opinions too ... really for when you get farther into the series.

I think there is a new love interest each book.... Everyone seems to want a piece of sookie ass! That is a slight exageration btw. :x

Bill is lamo I so agree there. Weakkkksauce.... That is one reason I liked eric so much more than bill.

@DC:
I tried reading the first book, but I couldn't finish it. I think the perma drunk the mc tried to have all of the time was a turn off.
There was something else that irritated me, but it has been a while since I tried the book. :x

Eric was way better in Club Dead. Actually overall the book was way better. Maybe cause bill was gone from most of it and she wasn't all vampiry swoony...

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Zeenat, I remember not really caring much about whether Sookie ended up with Bill or Eric. Eric was a lot more fun, but he didn't make me swoon.

I like Alcide as a character, though not as a romantic interest, and I remember the shapeshifter storyline was starting to get really interesting in the last book I read (I can't remember which one it was). But none of the characters really engaged me and made me care what happened to them. The books are entertaining, but fluffy.

message 2481: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Was Quinn that shapeshifter guy who showed up at the leadership battle? He was kinda odd compared to the rest? (I might be getting confused because it's a while since I read the books.)

That book with the leadership storyline was actually the last one I read.

message 2482: by Alina (new)

Alina (lialinali) | 107 comments Yes, this is Quinn but his character becomes more interesting later on ... I do not want to ruin to anybody and that's why I'll keep my opinion to myself (I actually survived all the series!!)

message 2483: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I liked quinn too, he seemed the most normal. If you did not take his family issues in mind. I wont go into that since it is spoiler territory. Though after whatever book the confrence is and the book after that has been read by zeenat she has a good idea of what I am talking about.
His choices were dumb and his obsessions afterwards ... yeah well. I don't think there are normalish people in sookieland 'sides sam and we all know what a big can of worms sam topic can be. It sucks because of all of the man drama that sam really is the best choice for sookie ... but still....

I understand what you mean about not caring about the characters. That is exactly how I feel. I enjoy the plot, but I don't feel like I care about anyone. Except for Sam. He's such a sweetie. Their kiss was hot ;) Although it's becoming a slightly annoying pattern. They kiss and are just friends for awhile before they have a passionate kiss again... so and so forth.

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments Just finished reading Definitely Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #6) by Charlaine Harris . This was the worst book so far. I love this series you should try in audiobook format too I have. It just brings the story more alive. A few of the books in the series I've read along with audiobooks. This was when I was still getting used to the audio versions.

I think I always rate them higher because I make a point of reading them when I'm in the mood for fluff. I can't get into Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, #11) by Charlaine Harris right now so I'm taking a break and trying The Restorer (Graveyard Queen, #1) by Amanda Stevens instead. Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I <3 those snarly males.... I think the third book is the best of the three personally.

Though ... seriously I remember those covers and the model for the 2nd book I think is the same for the 3rd and I don't remember her being very pretty ... like I don't have a lot of room to talk but I thought she was fugly and wondered maybe she was a relative?
For the life of me I can't remember what the 2nd cover looked like beyond the model was ugly. :/ I remember 1 and 3 though. Can't forget the 3rd one with her horn staff and lorn curled up behind her.

I haven't read that trilogy for a long time and my library put them up again so maybe now the typos and stuff have been fixed and I should give them a try. I am feeling twitchy though, since they don't have the last few books in that series....

I am pretty sure I know who Sookie's HEA. Even if I didn't suspect (view spoiler) based on all the hooplah recently, I would have still suspected him and would have hoped for him. Any other solution wouldn't make sense with the whole overarching Character development of Sookie. I'm actually surprised to see so many people upset because... ehhh whatever. It was going on in the back of my mind when I was reading the series, like on the back burner, while up front there was all this hub bub of who is sookie going to bang next blah blah.

I personally am more annoyed at the character happenings. Look @ eric then vs eric now. Character groth, on a scale like that? I get confused I know I shoyuld get it but there is something I can't articulate.

gd admien I swear it makes you sleepy and chatty

Before sookie was described I had thought she was black and was excited to read about a black heroine in a book. It just doesn't fit.

Tuesday is going to be fun if you read those boards and pages I am thinking.
