It was different. I didn’t really like her sign of the zodiac series so I kind of put it off. The rockabilly thing made me do a huh though, one of my cousins is/was really big into it and the guy that did my tattoo was also.
Didn’t see that sort of thing where I grew up or near NOLA where I lived for a few years before where I am now in TX.
Blahblahblah
It was different and I liked it, though not like omgihavetoreadthenext kind of like though.

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments @Jax - I read Night Circus not too long ago - it was OK. Just got Blood of Dragons this am on eBook - had it on hold at the Library; I love their checkout policy! I don't even have to get up off my lazy ass to get a new book!

Got to finish reading the RHEL book first though - computer books are so dry. I don't want to sound like a jerk if I ever get an interview, so read it I will.

Jane True...that sounds really familiar. What was the name of the book.

message 2262: by D.C. (new)

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments Jane True is a series by Nicole Peeler - so far every book has "Tempest" in the title, such as "Tempest Rising" "Tracking the Tempest" and so on. Jane is a Selkie halfling who has quite a time when she is introduced to the mythical world, and even more a time fitting in.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments The Jane True series has been on my radar forever. I really need to get round to starting it. It's worth a read for the cute covers alone. :)

I still have to find a copy... I don't want to read it on my phone or computer. I'm too lazy to go to the bookstore cause it's on the other sides of town... If I get to it it won't be for another week at least.

message 2266: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments That's absolutely fine Zeenat. Just holler when you're ready. I bought a paperback copy forever ago and I didn't think I'd be able to find it easily, but it was right there on my main bookshelf, which was a surprise. So, whenever suits you. :)

Duane, I'd quite fancy that but maybe in June? We're rereading the Kate Daniels books in May, so we could do Jane True in June. We need to find something for early July, cos the "Great Cassie Reread of 2013" will start towards the end of July (and, hey everyone, I'm still looking for volunteers to help with this! Plug, plug!!)

Would anyone else fancy reading Jane True in June?

message 2267: by D.C. (new)

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments @Lannister - What kind of help are you needing? Let me know and I'll do what I can.

June's good for the Jane True read - the last book in the series comes out on May 28th.

message 2268: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Duane, I'm looking for volunteers to lead the discussions for each Cassie book, so ideally, I need five volunteers. Zeenat offered to help, so she gets first choice for which book she wants, but I'm kinda hoping to get four more. I simply can't do it all myself.

Basically, all you have to do is read your chosen book beforehand and come up with maybe five or six discussion topics, and possibly a few random tidbits, quotes or observations to throw in on the side. Topics could be anything really, so long as they mostly focus on the events and characters of that particular book. So we could discuss whether we thought a character's decisions were smart/stupid/moral/immoral, or how a particular scene might have repercussions in the long run, or maybe how we view a scene differently in light of events in later books. Or whatever you like. You can also save a few random observations about stuff that characters say or do. The kind of thing that may not be enough to have a big discussion about, but it struck you as funny/odd/sad or whatever.

I'm thinking we might do one book every couple of weeks or thereabouts, so it'll be spread over roughly 8 - 10 weeks, i.e. probably from late July till the end of September, finishing up in time for Tempt the Stars at the beginning of October. So obviously you have to be around to post fairly regularly during the time period for your book.

We did this for the Dory books last year. Take a quick scan through the Midnight's Daughter thread, starting from comment 72 and you'll get an idea of the sort of thing we did last time. This is only to give you an idea of course. It would be entirely up to the discussion leader on how they want to run their particular discussion. I was hoping not to be tied to leading a discussion so that I've got plenty of time to support the people who are.

So if you fancy it Duane, I'd be delighted if you wanted to schedule yourself for one of the books. Does anyone else fancy leading a discussion? Pretty please? :D

Zeenat, do you still want to do this, and if so, do you have a preference for which book you'd like to do?

Blood of the Wicked (Dark Mission, #1) by Karina Cooper

I am torturing myself I think ... have the last book of the series and I am making myself read the series again slowly as I read other things too. Wonder how long it will be until I cave?

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Llaph, don't worry about not leading a discussion. There is a bit of work involved and it's not for everyone. But there's nothing to stop you joining in the chat when we do the readalongs. You've read the Cassie books before so you'll know what we're talking about.

I would say it's monday for an excuse, but I don't have a job so that is pointless....

I was planning on reading the cassie books again when tempt the stars's come out was closer. If my library is as slow as it was when hunt the moon came out I may just cave and buy it out right. I have put off fury's kiss because it is on the list for books that are being scanned and will be put up ... wtf that is ... I may give up there too.

It was the funniest book that I have read in a while. The book is The Bet by Rachel Van Dyken. I decided to read another one of her,The Elit, it was good too, but I enjoyed The bet more...

Well, I actually laugh out loud when I read a man say something like: (view spoiler) It always makes me laugh, 'cause many women write reviews about it later and it almost always goes like this: "God his so HOT. I want a man like that!" and the sad truth is that that if some guy said something like that to them in a bar, I'm 85% sure that they would either a) slapped him in a face, or b) threw a drink at him. LOL :D

message 2285: by Llaph (last edited Apr 22, 2013 01:24PM) (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I can agree on that for the most part. I tend to read many different types of books. Some romance authors (contemporary wise) that I have read and liked are Linda Howard, she has books that make me laugh Mr. Perfect>Mr. Perfect and one made me cry (seriously wtf) Cry no More. I made the mistake for me reading some of her earlier books … hold the damn train I wanted to kill the FMCs in those books. What sexist crap was there, it is so dated … I don’t want to paste the link but her book “An Independent Wife” independent my ass, she was fine till her ass hat husband came back into the picture. (it was in like the late 80s/early 90s)
That made me see the progression expectations of what women wanted to read over the years and made me put on a sad face to see how it was, and think of how it is now.
I recently read a book that got good reviews, but I thought it was sappy as hell and gave it a 2.
It all depends on what you want to read, I have my authors that write suspense, crime/mysteries/comedy (that isn’t stupid), and I rarely really read just straight romance unless the blurb looks interesting. I chose LH as an example because she skips over so many different genres and I liked most of them. I prefer suspense/crime kind of stuff if I don’t have a good pnr or uf series to read.

message 2286: by Margo (new)

Margo | 663 comments Your right Llaph, everything depends on what you want to read. I like UF,PNR, simple romance, mystery, criminal, historical and so on and on. Lately I focused on UF, but I still love Kristen Ashley's books. They do have "caveman speech" in them but it's not so tasteless as so many this days. It's actually funny and it fits the men the author is describing and it doesn't seem forced.

message 2287: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments Finished the Cal Leandros series... It was only okay... The "I'm gonna die for my brother" motif got old...

Starting a new series, Dark Descendant (Nikki Glass, #1) by Jenna Black . We'll see how that goes. Once I pick up The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald , I'll reread that. And I may start A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, #4) by George R.R. Martin .

message 2288: by D.C. (new)

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments Dark Descendent was just OK - so much of her (Jenna Black) stuff is. Her Morgan Kingsley series was the same - just OK - always beating the same old horse to death. Of course, this is just my opinion. I think a new book in the Nikki Glass series comes out at the end of this month.

message 2289: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments I didn't like the morgan kingsley books. I thought Morgan was boring. chip on the shoulder crap. nikki glass i hope is better, not only cause of the new book, but because it's set close to home :D

message 2290: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Claire wrote: "I'd be okay with embrace the night, as long as we get to it after may 7!"

Claire, I haven't quite worked out the timeline for the reread yet, but it's not immediate. Embrace the Night would probably be August or maybe into September. The reread is going to finish up at the end of September in time for Tempt the Stars coming out in October. I presume you'll be going back to college in early September? Would that be a problem to lead a discussion around then? I hope not, cos I'd love for you to do one. :)

Peeps, give me your thoughts on how long you want to allow for each book in the readalong. I feel a week is just too short, as some people don't have a lot of time to read, and others don't like reading a series back to back, without reading something else in between.

When we did the Dory reread last year, we allowed two weeks per book and I think that was OK (though there were only two books to read), but I wondered if some of you might prefer 10 days per Cassie book? Basically, how long do you want to spread out the reread.

If we do two weeks per book, it would start roughly mid-July till the end of September. If we allow ten days each, it would kick off around early/mid August. Do you want it to run over ten weeks, or cut it down to about 7ish weeks? Does anyone have any preferences?

message 2291: by D.C. (new)

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments @Zeenat - Its better than "Morgan Kingley," but the chip has just been transferred from one character to another; kind of like Morgan's long lost sister.

If you read the "Riley Jenson" series by Keri Arthur and liked them, you might be interested in the "Spook Squad" series she wrote long before Riley came along. You can tell from reading the series (its only three books) where Riley, the plots, ideas, and overall writing process came from. The books were definitely rough cuts, and to me they sounded like rough cuts of the more refined "Riley Jenson" series. I liked them.

If you decide you might like to read them but can't find them, let me know. I don't see where Amazon has Kindle versions - at least not for the first book. Of course, I could be wrong as I don't have a Kindle.

message 2292: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments @ lannister:
I would so not be able to follow that with how fast I read books....

@ zeenat:
I agree on the brother bit with that series, the last book I have read so far is Road Kill. Not feeling rabid about the series though.
Nikki Glass series imo is a lot better than the Morgan Kingsley series. She is less whiney and I really disliked Morgan's views and insta judgemental crap.

The next nikki comes out next tuesday and I have been waiting patiently. (ya right)
I have read the 2 books and the short story atleast twice ... I don't have the urge to re read the morgan series though.

message 2293: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Llaph, well there's nothing to stop you reading ahead if you want! :)

However I feel the discussions need some sort of organisation or it will all peter out. So while people can read at any pace they like, we will try to focus chat on a particular book for a particular time period, and that's what I'm trying to figure out. Is two weeks too long to focus on one book or what?

message 2294: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments 10 real days or 10 work days (meaning 2 weeks)? I think two weeks work. Yes that's really 10 weeks, 2.5 months with the 5 books, but timewise it seems reasonable. 10 days is good too, but harder to keep track of with real life.

message 2295: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I was meaning 10 actual days. We could probably simplify it slightly by saying something like start days of 10 Aug (#1)/20 Aug (#2)/01 Sept (#3)/10 Sept (#4)/20 Sept (#5).

Or we just divide the months into two and have something like this:

15 July (#1)
01 Aug (#2)
15 Aug (#3)
01 Sept (#4)
15 Sept (#5)

I do quite like the idea of stretching it out over 2.5 months as it allows time to get a real buzz going and get us in the mood for Tempt the Stars, but I need to know that the discussion leaders are OK with managing discussions for two weeks also!
