Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments I might try Toby Days series another go too...if I could fit it into a reading challenge even better.

Finished yesterday City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare and I understand why people like it so much.

message 152: by Margo (new)

Margo | 663 comments Yeah first 3 books of The Mortal Instruments are great but unfortunately after the third book it is down hill from there :( (at least in my opinion)

message 153: by [deleted user] (new)

In my unceasing effort to get Toby all to myself, (view spoiler) LOL!

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments Duane, make it lead to me!

message 155: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll have to wait until traffic lets up - it's a little dangerous out there right now!

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Yeah, just to remind everyone the October Daye group read kicks off mid-November. More info in this thread:

I hope lots of you will join in, cos it really is a lot of fun discussing your thoughts with old and new readers when we're all at the same place in the series. :)

message 158: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I just finished Kiss of the Highlander (Highlander, #4) by Karen Marie Moning and it was actually quite good.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Good Claire, I plan to read it. Is there any time travel like in the previous books?

message 160: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments If I really like ICED and I can't wait for the next books, I may read the highlander books.

message 161: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments @Valerie Yes, there is time travel, but it's not the same way or as prevalent in the storyline as previous books. My favorite thing is that main character is a physicist (like me) so I was very excited

message 162: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Davie (kathydavie) | 457 comments I have to agree. I love Toby!

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Oh, good. I needed a book for a time travel category and was hoping that it would fit and I liked the previous books. Thanks!

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments I know it's light reading but I liked Eve Silver's Otherkin series. I don't know which brother I would choose if I could.

Margo | 663 comments Okay I can officially say that I've tried October Days (I've listened to two audio books) and didn't like them.

*shrugs* Well at least I've tried :/

I've heard both good and bad things....but I have to have a book that's not slow at all and pulls me in pretty fast.

message 174: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments @Gin me too!! It's on my "to read" shelf

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments I'm listening to the audiobook of Anna and loving it. I rarely like YA but this one works for me.

Really? That's good 'cause I bought it some time ago and am planning to read it this weekend.

Aw, that's too bad Margo :(

I am looking forward to giving it a try next month, but I have heard that it's slow to start. Maybe the group read will give you some enthusiasm to try the third book.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Margo, I dislike YA with a lot of angst and ranting over inconsequential things. In the Anna series, there is little of that and Cass knows what he's doing and pro-active about it and he picks up odd sidekicks along the way. Too bad that I only have about 3 hours left of audio to listen to.

Not everything is for everyone! :)

message 180: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments So I read the first Charley Davidson. Ehhhh . . . It was ok. A bit boring actually. I don't think I'm gonna try the second one any time soon. I'll stick to reading Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy for now and rereading White Witch, Black Curse (The Hollows, #7) by Kim Harrison Black Magic Sanction (The Hollows, #8) by Kim Harrison and Magic to the Bone (Allie Beckstrom, #1) by Devon Monk

message 181: by Margo (new)

Margo | 663 comments @ Lannister - I don't think I'm gonna give the 3rd book a try 'cause I already give it to book 1 and 2. I would give it a shot if the 2nd book was even the slight est bit better but unfortunately it wasn't (at least for me) :( so I give up

@ Val - I think I finally grown out of teenage girls and their love life. I want to scream every time my friend lends me another teenage drama romance which is strange in itself 'cause I don't mind if it's manga or anime :/ but if I read another "good girl & bad boy" combo in high school (even if his a werewolf and she's a fae) that are "star cross lovers" or any age "star cross lovers" for that matter then I'm gonna be sick. I prefer my female characters to be at least mid twenties and my friend says she can't identify herself with 30 year old woman (which is also strange 'cause she's 26 just like me :P)

message 182: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments maybe she doesn't want to identify with a 30 year old woman ;) ROFL!

message 183: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I didn't know it was YA. Hmmm. Well, I'll try it anyway. But generally speaking, I don't really like YA novels because of the style of writing and such. And I've never really thought like a typical teenager, so more often than not I just get mad at the characters.

LMAO :D:D:D

@ Claire - I never thought as a "typical teenager" either :p

Totally in agreement with you there. I loved YA like The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer Eve (Eve, #1) by Anna Carey Eon Dragoneye Reborn (Eon, #1) by Alison Goodman and puked my guts out on Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver Smokeless Fire (Fire Spirits, #1) by Samantha Young .

Thinking back on those....they are the only YA books I've ever read. I have tons of YA on my TBR pile that I touch with a 10 foot pole. I must be in a bind to even pick one up for a reading challenge. Lately I lucked out with the good ones so my knowledge is very limited.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Anyone can suggest another YA I might like? I'm game to at least try.

message 187: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Valerie, I highly recommend Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee if you haven't read it. It's one of the best books I've read in ages. It's officially YA, but is completely remote from the bitchy high school kind of YA books that annoy so much! Be warned though, if you find you like it, come the end you'll be desperate for the next one!! :)

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments The premise looks interesting. I'll give it a try, don't know when but within the year I hope.

message 189: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments LOL, I say that about so many books then I forget all about them! You could wait until the second one comes out, which is sometime next year (to be confirmed). That way, if you like the first one, you can go straight on to the second, and if you don't, well nothing was lost!

I don't normally read YA at all. I usually avoid it like the plague, but I really enjoyed this book and tons of people recommended it.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments My biggest problem is when I browse Amazon for reduced or free reads....most of the time they are YA. I do get them but I don't know when I'll get around reading them. The covers are so pretty and everything.

message 191: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Yeah, I'm a bit of a sucker for a good cover too. It's kinda ridiculous that we still 'judge a book by its cover' in the days of ebooks, yet we do!

God knows how many free books I've downloaded but never got round to reading, but what the hell, they were free or ridiculously cheap! That Angelfall book I talked about above was dirt cheap when I bought it, but the author's been signed by a major publisher now, so naturally the price shot up!

message 192: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments There are the occasionally YA books that I really enjoy but it's rare. I will say that they have the prettiest covers!

message 193: by Jax (new)

Jax | 831 comments Finished Death Masks (The Dresden Files, #5) by Jim Butcher and Lady of Devices (Magnificent Devices #1) by Shelley Adina
Now reading Her Own Devices (Magnificent Devices #2) by Shelley Adina

message 194: by Margo (new)

Margo | 663 comments Good to know I'm not the only sucker for a good book cover :) The truth is that I bought City of Bones only because the Polish version of the cover looks like this: Miasto Kości (Dary Anioła, #1) by Cassandra Clare and 'cause I was into manga and anime at that time the guy from the cover looked like anime character :). City of Glass was the last book I've read in Polish then I switched to original :)

message 195: by [deleted user] (new)

I've picked several series due to the covers, and for the most part I've been more than satisfied. Of course, I usually try to investigate the series first as well, so many times the cover is what determines which series I read; two or more series in contention for a read, and only one with a cool cover? Problem solved.

message 196: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I rely more on the blurb than the cover, though I cannot deny a nice cover makes a good impression. But if the book description sounds a bit crap, no cover in the world is going to make me buy it.

message 197: by Claire (last edited Oct 26, 2012 10:51AM) (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments A book cover was actually how I found one of my favorite authors and got into adult urban fantasy novels in the first place. I saw A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore in a book store while on vacation and just had to have it. I ended up loving the book and reading a lot more of Christopher Moore's work.

message 198: by Diane (new)

Diane (FriskyVamp) | 372 comments I agree with Duane, I usually look at the cover then find out what the book is about and any reviews.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments I guess it needs to catch you eye before you even consider reading the blurb. Hook, line and sinker.

This one Kushiel's Dart (Phèdre's Trilogy #1) by Jacqueline Carey has been vegetating in my TBR pile for a long time because there are so many books already published. I don't know if I'll read all the books, I don't know what I'm getting into.

message 200: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments That's also a series I've thought about reading too, Valerie. But sometimes a big long series can seem so daunting!
