Let's talk about A Series of Unfortunate Events. I loved reading every single book.

What did YOU think of it?

Good? Bad? Characters you liked/disliked?

Let it all out!

message 6: by Adria (new) - added it

Adria Wittich The intelligent orphans who could think off the top of their head for solutions to their problems.

Cecilia Carreon i couldnt finish the series it went on forever. I love them until i stopped after that it became a little boring for me. Wish they kept somewhat short.

Maureen LOVED IT!I can't get enough of this series.I keep reading it over and over. Favorite character=Count Olaf. He is sooooo evil.

message 9: by Elliegrace (new)

Elliegrace i loved sunny...did you know theres a movie?

Shyam This series went on for so long. That would normally make me dislike the book, but this series was just plain entertaining. The author thought of so many different situations where Count Olaf could be one of the participants. I loved this series.

Victoria Ellis Elliegrace wrote: "i loved sunny...did you know theres a movie?"
Yeah, the film is really awful! I loved the way you can watch Sunny grow up :'), but I have to admit that Count Olaf was my favourite character, like Maureen said he was so evil, resourceful and determined to get the fortune!

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

i think the last book could have been a little more happier

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

My first book series...LOVED THEM ALL! Fav charatcter: Violet and Duncan Quagmire...AWESOME COUPLE!

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

The best book is a pull between the Slippery Slope and the Penultimate Peril. It's so sad yet so funny at the same time. Lemony Snicket is soooo depressing. My favourite characters are Isadora, Quigley and Olaf. I wonder what happened to them, especially little Beatrice. And yes, the film is a complete eurgh, but to be fair I cracked up a couple of time. When I saw the start 'The Littlest Elf' , I was like- LOL. It was nice to see Sunny grow up. I love her vocab! One of the best series ever, don't you agree?

Ivette OMG! this series was THE one that got me started into the hole reading for fun. It got suspense, logical order, it is wonderfully writing, the characters are solid and they actually grow whit the book; heck I feel like the grew whit me, I was 11 when I started reading and finished when I was about 15 or was it 16.... well the thing is I loved the series and I have read it twice since the first time, every time keep finding some thing new and I fall for the book again no matter how old you are.

message 18: by Zoe (new) - rated it 4 stars

Zoe Taurus I think that the ending was a little dissapointing because none of the mysteries were solved, but i still love Mr.Snicket's dry sarcasim. I wish that he would make another book to expain beatrice

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

He did; the Beatrice Letters!

Laszlo VFD=Volunteer Fire Department, if that would help.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Are the books short or long, i read the first one, and it was expansive and short.

Jessica Shahdia wrote: "He did; the Beatrice Letters!"

The Beatrice Letters????

Laszlo It is another book by Lemony Snicket.

message 24: by Maya (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maya I loved the whole series.
I absolutely loved Violet and Quigley Quagmire.
The ending confused me a bit,i mean, did they get eaten by the monster?I was really hoping for a happy ending though, but these are still one of my favourite series.

Sarya Love it. Sunny is just adorable!

Lalola Kaban I love it. Lemony Snicket succeeded on creating a story which attracts the curiosity of its reader and longing for more stories about the Baudelaire. That's why Lemony Snicket is a genius writer, he didn't write his children story about rainbows and phonies. Instead, he wrote the dark and unhappy journey of these three (or five including the Quagmire Twins) children.

And it works. The Series of Unfortunate Events are still my best collection. That shows how addictive sadness can be.

Kareena I love the books. I have read the series at least 5 times over and it is better everytime because you can imagine so many different scenarios. My favourite happens to be the hostile hospital with the brain surgery and and the alphabet soup. Oh, and the bungee jump with rubber bands. Soooooo good. My favourite charater is... all of them. You need them all for a good story. Can any of your picture the series without say, Esme' or Mr Poe. Mr Poe has to be my least favourite, favourite charaster. He is so naive and unhelpful.

Renae Can I just say I love this author. What a way to explain monotonous, or deja vu! XD Amazing! Also, if you read any of the books and then re-read the first chapter, the foreshadowing is both depressing and hilarious.

Also, I find the best way to re-read is to marathon all the books, one right after another. It connects a lot of plot dots in your mind you didn't even know existed.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved this book series and for a while I hoped that maybe the author would write another series.

same here, if it weren't for this series I swear I would of ended up hating books!!! I read this series in fifth grade and i'm going to start reading this series again soon because I'm starting to forget what happens.

Samantha The movies are pretty bad compared to the books they only go to the third book in the movies

Renae Pretty bad? Catastrophic was more like it.

message 33: by Iman (new)

Iman I loved it but the last book didnt answer any of my questions AT ALL LIK WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE SUGAR BOWL AND THEY WERE NOT VERY CLEAR ON HOW OLAF DIED AND AT TE END IT SAID BEATRICE THAT MEANS THERE MOTHERS BOAT (AM I RIGHT THAT'S HAT I THOUGHT)BUT IT WAS NOT THAT COOL and like arggggg

Renae I thought they were pretty clear on how he died. Also, though you can gather the whole confusing history through little hints in the rest of the books, I think the ending was supposed to leave you with the feeling that so many things are beyond control, and so many stories and people beyond understanding, in a way.

Matthew I finished this series when I was ten(no joke) and loved and understand their pleas. When anything bad happened, I wanted to jump into the book, give Count Olaf(epic name by the way)a taste of his own medicine, then jump back out and read. It was so depressing you smiled at their smartness being wasted away, not going to school(excluding book 5 or 6! someone help I forgot!), and not having a great life...

That's just what Lemony Snicket intended to do, and boy, did he do it! He is one smart author, it must have took him YEARS to write the first few books, and he must have had to write all the books at once so he didn't forget anything.

Phew! That took forever to type and now my hands hurt, happy now that I've contributed to this talk? YOU HAPPY? YOU EFFING SHOULD BE!

Matthew xx

Allison i read this series back in grade 4... i loved it then.
i re-read the series this summer and i loved it even more. I was able to catch new details and i had alot of "oh-yeah, i remember that" and "Ah-hah" moments.

I loved the entire plot, the beautifully crafted characters, and the mixed feelings i got while reading the series.

I have nothing but good reviews for this series. :)

Iman wrote: "I loved it but the last book didnt answer any of my questions AT ALL LIK WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE SUGAR BOWL AND THEY WERE NOT VERY CLEAR ON HOW OLAF DIED AND AT TE END IT SAID BEATRICE THAT MEANS TH..."

I kind of agree with that. I mean, he doesn't need to leave any mysteries to be solved in later books because, well, that's, like, the last one.

Naina The suspense the... The tension... The clever ideas they just were giving me strokes :) it was an awesome series in the movie Count Olaf is my favourite actor... I hate Mr. Poe!!! Ergh he made me so mad he didn't even care about them.. But awesome book:)

message 39: by Angie (last edited Apr 19, 2013 12:58PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Angie I like the plot of the story, also the definition and explanation of the words and phrases. I like also how the Baudelaires get solutions.

What I dislike is the idiotic people (one of them is Mr. Poe) who don't believe in the orphans when the true is or was in front of their noses, and in the next book they have another version of the last events where the Baudelaires have the fault while Count Olaf is scarcely or not mentioned.

What I also saw, and it is remarkable, is that people who is a villain have an important position in society and they can manipulate almost everyone while the good ones have to struggle just to be heard.

message 40: by Katrina (last edited Apr 20, 2013 06:44PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Katrina I read them at a younger age, and they freaked me out a little, but I just had to finish the series! They were absolutely unfortunate and frankly slightly demented, but really good! The ending sort of caught me by surprise. A lot. It was so unexpected, and a little confusing. I would definitely love to read them again. As long as I don't get nightmares this time.

Steph This thread is making me so nostalgic - I really want to reread the books now, but it takes so long....

Have you guys done a lot of rereads of the series?

Every single time :D

message 45: by Nour (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nour The Bad Begginning was a really interesting book, that it was the reason I wanted to read from The Reptile Room and The Wide Window till The End.

Emmaly great great great great great great great series love all of them

message 47: by Nour (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nour The Bad Beginning was basically starting the whole nightmare the Baudelaire orphans went through. Mr. Poe took the children to their new guardian, Count Olaf, with a picture of an eye all around his house, and it was even on Count Olaf's ankle. The children were staying in a room with one small and bumpy bed, and a cardboard box instead of a closet. Count Olaf becomes very evil in the Bad Beginning.

message 48: by Nour (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nour Till now, I'm up to finishing Book the Ninth: The Carnivorous Carnival. I couldn't wait to finish this marvelous series of books.

Kendra Shyam wrote: "This series went on for so long. That would normally make me dislike the book, but this series was just plain entertaining. The author thought of so many different situations where Count Olaf could..."

I completely agree! Normally, if a series is very long, it'll discourage me from reading it, but I decided to read A Series of Unfortunate Events anyways, and I loved the whole series! I feel like although there are many different stories in this series, they connect to form one mega-plot, in a way. Also, I feel like anyone can read them, and that's they're not too childish nor too adultish.

Caitlin Clowers I read the series when I was in 5th and 6th grade. Now, I am rereading, and collecting the series. I have about half collected, but I am using used or cheap bookstores, so it is taking a while.
