Just to let you know: When you start a Side Read you can put the book on the Currently Reading shelf so others can know about it more easily. Just be sure to include Start and End dates for the reading. Thanks.
I am still reading East of Eden as well. Life has gotten in the way of my reading - I hate when that happens!! But I would be up for a discussion if others are reading it now.
Meghan wrote: "Oh wow, thanks for the recommendation, Kelsi! Now I'm even more excited to read it!"No problem. East of Eden left me in tears for many different reasons. The characters are all deeply flawed but I found myself really sympathizing and getting really invested in them. Ahh! I love it!
I just started Madame Bovary. If anyone is reading it, has read it, or wants to read it, let me know. I would love to discuss it with someone.

I want to read this, but I don't have time before January. If you start a discussion thread, I will contribute to it at a later date.
Of course this book has been rated as one of the top novels of all time, and Somerset Maugham has even included this in the top ten novels of all time. I can't wait to see what is so incredible about this book.
It will also be interesting to compare the theme of adultry as presented in Madame Bovary as compared to Anna Karenina.
I could have sworn we'd read that as a group already, but looking back through the group's books, I don't see it; must have been for another group. Wish I could join you, just don't have time with David Copperfield and several others right now. Curious what you think, though!
I hated Madam Bovary the first time I read it (in my early twenties); seems like I read it more recently and appreciated it a lot more. I doubt I'll get it read again any time soon but that's one I'd be interested in re-reading. One thing I have always appreciated is Gustave Flaubert's quote, "If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter" -- there's a guy who understands the true value of self-editing!
I'm reading
An Old-fashioned Girl, by Louisa May Alcott. It's amazing my change of perspective when I read it first (20 years ago) and now. I've barely read the half of it, if someone is willing to catch up and start a side read folder I'd love it. I'm not going fast, I'm doing two books at the same time. Plenty of time to catch up and discuss!!! :)
I think Flaubert's Sentimental Education will not win the poll (call me prescient if you want). It is a book I was planning to read in February anyway, so if any of you - especially those other 9 members who voted for it - want to read as a side read, let me know. I'm not great at leading discussions, but will do it so that we can exchange thoughts.
I'm reading Mansfield Park as I continue going through all of Jane Austen's books this year. Anyone want to read that one with me?
I'm reading The Ladies Paradise by Emile Zola if anyone would like to join. It's a fictional account of the first true department store, in Paris, and how it changed consumer culture.
Alana, I'm going through Jane Austen's books this year as well. I was thinking about doing the Annotated Persuasion next because it's at the library, but if you start a discussion I could do Mansfield Park instead. I just read Persuasion anyhow. :)
I finished Mansfield Park already, I have to look and see what the next one is...I've been reading them in published order. Emma, maybe?
Heh, sorry Alana, I didn't notice the date of your post and thought I'd read this thread more recently. And, yes, Emma's next. :)
Is anyone interested in reading Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe as a side read with me? I'm thinking we can start today and go for 30 days, even though it's a short book, just to give people a chance to fit it into their reading schedules. Let me know and I'll start a thread for it in the side reads section.
If you're still interested in reading Things Fall Apart with someone, I'd be game to include it in my June reading list - I'd prefer a shorter timeframe if that's okay, maybe 2 weeks?
Sounds like a plan - I should have my library copy by Thursday at the latest. If you're interested in reading the other two books in the trilogy I'd be game do those as well.
I'm also interested in reading Things Fall Apart soon. I was able to borrow a Kindle book from my library. :)
Since we're supposed to start tomorrow, perhaps you'd like to start a discussion thread for us Tamara?
Things Fall Apart is a very quick read. I've recently read it and would love to participate in the discussions!
Aprilleigh wrote: "Since we're supposed to start tomorrow, perhaps you'd like to start a discussion thread for us Tamara?"I'll go start the discussion now. I just got back from being out of town so sorry for the delay!
I'm going to read Jane Eyre in the next week or two. Anyone up for a side read? We can leave it open for the month of July. Would love a few other people to read along with.

I've read it so many time, I won't be rereading, but will follow the discussion.

I read that a couple of months ago. It has easily moved into my top 5 books I've ever read. Interested to hear what you think!
