SOLVED. YA fiction in the future where there is only one girl left alive in the world and everyone she ever knew is in purgatory (Spoilers) [s]

This book is set in the future where everyone in the world dies from a disease. The only person left is a girl in Antarctica; I believe she was sent there to find a cure for the disease. In the book there is a sort of purgatory for people who have died, and the only people there are people who still know someone who is alive. The book starts out with a bunch of people alive in the real world and as more people die of the disease, more end up in the purgatory. Eventually, only the people who knew the girl (I want to say her name is Melanie but I could be wrong) are left in purgatory because she is the only person still alive. At the end, the girl dies and everyone leaves purgatory.
