Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Dear Members, please note that there is now a fanfiction area which is just waiting to receive contributions from all of you, and a "Contributor Palimpsest" where members are encouraged to start their own threads and go as nutty as they like.

I would prefer for you to use that as a member's "free" area, so that the other sections of the group area doesn't become too long.

You can make the Contributor's Palimsest as long as you like, and post new threads as you desire.

Also, please don't hesitate to make use of the videos, polls and photos links on the top right hand side of the main page.

I will be working on putting a bit more info into the bookshelf in the near future, and we envisage a few group reads as soon as we have completed construction around here.

Thanks for your kind words, Clouds.
As long as you enjoy yourself here and feel you can express yourself adequately, it's worth it! :)

Andrea Trav, you've put a heap of work into this. Thank you so much, it's very appreciated.
Also, please can you keep an eye on China Girls' lusting after CM and delete our inappropriate posts (ones in the wrong place) when we can't control ourselves.

Oooo.. I just put this on the TRL & would love to join your group read if you'll have me :)

message 9: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Of course Jenn-- how could you even doubt it? :o
Looking forward to seeing you there. :)

message 10: by Annie (new)

Annie (aschoate) | 78 comments I will start digging in my boxes for Perdido Street. I should find it by 11/10.

message 11: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Good :)

Since it's our first read it will be a test run and quite flexible.

message 12: by Robert (new)

Robert Delikat (imedicineman) | 54 comments 'just finished Railsea. I'm ready for a reread of PSS. Should be plenty of time to finally finish that Brandon Sanderson, tWoK.

message 13: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Good, hope you enjoyed it, Robert! I really hope we're going to have a good turnout for PSS, because there's a lot of things in the novel that I'd like to discuss with a bunch of smart people like we have in our membership here.

message 14: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Mievillians, the poll on reading pace is to help us to try and accommodate everyone as best we can with our group reads.

Therefore your participation in the poll will be highly appreciated if you plan on reading one of Mieville's novels with us, and especially the upcoming read of PSS.

message 15: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Dear Mievillians

Please keep in mind that we will be starting actual discussion of Perdido Street Station by November 9. If you are joining us for the group discussion, and you find yourself reading less than about 60 pages a day in general, and if this is your first reading of PSS, it would be a good idea to start the novel by latest the first week of November, if not earlier, since we have quite a tight schedule before completing towards the end of November.

I've divided the discussion section into roughly 40-48 pages each, but it will be nice if we can have at least three or four sections done by the end the first weekend to give us a good start.

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Thanks guys. You are the nicest group of friends anyone could wish for. Now i feel a bit bad that I posted about this--it seems so self-indulgent now, to have done it, but it was such a shock that i went a bit strange for a while there.

However, feeling better today and ready to commence with our read. :)

Thank you so much for your kindness and concern.

Always the way, isn't it? Recovering from a blow like this, a sudden loss, is a rough road. Gentle journey to the departed, with wishes for a safe road home.

XOXO Richard. That is such a lovely comment.

I'd wondered what had happened to you. GR doesn't update me on you anymore...i've realized it only updates what you'd visited most recently, though.

Annie (aschoate) | 78 comments Traveller,

Could you post the general order of things that developed in one of the PSS threads in an easily found place? I'm wondering what's next?

message 35: by Cecily (new)

Cecily | 301 comments I see this group has just become 18+. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I didn't want to give GR my real DOB nor did I want to give an incorrect one, but I now have to do one or the other to participate. Hmm. Anyway. Having done one of those two, and being readmitted, I wonder if deleting my DOB will remove me again?

message 36: by Cecily (last edited Jan 30, 2013 12:34AM) (new)

Cecily | 301 comments Nope, it seems you have to set - and keep - a DOB to be able to participate.

And setting its privacy to "Show age and birthday to no one" doesn't work!

Grr.

message 37: by Ian (new)

Ian "Marvin" Graye Can't you be 100? Does that work?

message 38: by Ian (new)

Ian "Marvin" Graye Cecily, I've sent a group broadcast about this issue. It should be resolved tomorrow when GR fixes an issue that is preventing us make the group open.

message 39: by Traveller (last edited Jan 30, 2013 09:14AM) (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Our sincere apologies for this problem... i have also sent a request that Mievillians immediately be relieved of this requirement. At date of group creation, some other members thought leaving the setting on might be a good thing, but since CM wrote a children's book and a YA book, it would be a good idea to remove it altogether, i think.

Unfortunately, GR has temporarily blocked moderators from removing the age requirement, but we will have that fixed as soon as we possibly can.
Apologies yet again for the inconvenience.

I personally was also blocked, but overcame that by setting my DOB as 1913. Apparently if you set it to private, only you can see it but nobody else can.

I have left mine viewable as 1913, though, btw, so that's rather fun to be so old. :D

So am i looking good for 99, Richard? Sent you a PM, btw.

message 42: by Cecily (new)

Cecily | 301 comments Rest assured, I don't blame the group admins, and I'm sure no one else does. I have set my age to 100 - because the option to hide your DOB doesn't work!

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments I suppose this is as a good a place as any to pay tribute to the beautiful and poetic prose of Jack Vance who passed away last Sunday.
http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/05/jack...

From Wikipedia: John Holbrook Vance (August 28, 1916 – May 26, 2013) was an American mystery, fantasy and science fiction writer. Most of his work has been published under the name Jack Vance. He also wrote 11 mystery novels as John Holbrook Vance and three as Ellery Queen, and once each used pseudonyms Alan Wade, Peter Held, John van See, and Jay Kavanse.

Vance won the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 1984 and he was a Guest of Honor at the 1992 World Science Fiction Convention in Orlando, Florida. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America made him its 14th Grand Master in 1997 and the Science Fiction Hall of Fame inducted him in 2001, its sixth class of two deceased and two living writers.

Among his awards for particular works were: Hugo Awards, in 1963 for The Dragon Masters, in 1967 for The Last Castle, and in 2010 for his memoir This is Me, Jack Vance!; a Nebula Award in 1966, also for The Last Castle; the Jupiter Award in 1975; the World Fantasy Award in 1990 for Lyonesse: Madouc.[3] He also won an Edgar (the mystery equivalent of the Nebula) for the best first mystery novel in 1961 for The Man in the Cage.

A 2009 profile in the New York Times Magazine described Vance as "one of American literature’s most distinctive and undervalued voices."[8] He died at his home in Oakland, California, May 26, 2013, aged 96.

Well, I learned something new! I never knew Jack wrote under so many pseudonyms, and that one of them was Ellery Queen, whom I have heard of, but never read.

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Here is a glossary thread for you guys to spam with any "unusual" CM words that you'd like to keep track of.

I've started out the glossary with a few words that appeared esoteric to me at first, but some of which turned out to be relatively commonplace and others pretty interesting:

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Hello all. Just in case you weren't already aware of the drama: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Note that the comment thread is already more than 4000 replies strong--approaching the mid-4000's.

Goodreads is clamping down on what we are allowed and what we are not allowed to say. Best take note. Unfortunately one of the genres affected would appear to be the fantasy genre. What a pity.
