Do you think Neen's mother actually died? Or do merrows and all the rest of the Other creatures actually exist?

Yes, I think that Neen's mother really was dead. Though, maybe her soul lives on in the sea somehow? I believe the idea of the book is a sort of coming of age story for Neen who is trying to discern the difference between fantasy and reality and in some ways has adopted the idea of her mother becoming a merrow as her way of coping. She is also unhappy with her life among the gossiping townspeople and her harsh aunt so the idea that her mother is waiting for her in the mysterious, beautiful ocean is her fantasy escape from a much harsher reality she does not yet fully understand, one filled with illness and starvation in hard times. Ma Slevin's stories of her children being kidnapped by fairies and replaced is probably also a reality disguised in a fairytale of her children becoming ill and dying, all except Scully who recovered from his illness in infancy but became blind because of it.
