The 46% who haven't read a book in a year is an eye-opener. And even among book nerds, this group is unusual.
Reading our Daily Mail rag will probably strengthen your Tea Party vote! It certainly brings out the worst in the right wing here and promotes the dog-eat-dog kind of sensationalist politics where corrupt capitalists 'get away with murder' and workers fall upon each other:-http://news.yahoo.com/daily-mail-york...

Yes, but I prefer a book. Also I do most of my reading at night and hubby has banned iPad from bedroom so it's not a really good fit for me. Lastly, I don't want to be pushed to read via an ebook unless I choose to.

I find my Kindle much better for reading in bed as it can be held at any angle and fonts can be enlarged. I expect to be doing the same with my Samsung Galaxy 7.0 tablet shortly.

My iPad is a full-sized one so it gets a bit heavy and awkward for me to hold. I have small hands and one wrist was really injured a while ago so is not as strong.

We already have tabloid rags here, 2 just in NY, and a bunch in the supermarkets, and they don't give The Times any competition. They're aimed at a different readership. I wonder where Yahoo gets their news from.

I've downloaded lots of free books to my iPhone and find that it's a great way to read in bed when hubby has requested lights out-although the screen is very small. It's not blue lit (which I think actually inhibits sleep), it's very lightweight and can be easily read one-handed (for those cold nights when you want the rest of you under the covers). I prefer a book in general but with the iPhone it does mean I've always got my current classics in my purse (no way I would be lugging around Dickens otherwise) for whenever I have a few minutes to kill.

I haven't, but can do so easily. I've enjoyed the ebooks I've read on my iPad from Barnes and Noble. It does get rather heavy to hold after a while (full-sized iPad). I think the mini might be better for that. It's great to change the font to a size that works for you. Yet, I still prefer a regular book.

My eye sight is not good enough to read from my iPhone. Plus hubby's ban includes all electronics. He's actually now sleeping with a sleep mask because of my reading light.

Poor thing:O I have a very small light which attaches to my ear which you may find useful - he could buy you one!http://www.ebay.com/itm/ECTACOS-hands...

Try Firefox with the add-on AdBlockPlus. No ads on any site. There is no IE equivalent.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/04/mov...I'm a movie snob. I've seen about half of her films, but didn't realize how many until now. A great writer.
☯Emily wrote: "I loved her Forster films."I never would have discovered Forster otherwise. I've read most of his books after seeing the films. But I don't have an urge to reread James after viewing his novels on film, one case where I think the films are better than the books. Jhabvala captured the essence of his novels without all the excess verbiage James inserted.

It is a symbol used in the theater to represent comedy and tragedy:http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the...
I'm familiar with those. But it doesn't appear unless the reader has it in their font collection. Here it's just a small square containing "262F."
Oh, I didn't know that. Many of us in another group did those symbols about a year ago. I didn't realize it didn't translate everywhere. Interesting. You are the first person to mention it. Do the others see the 262F or the black/white mask?
☯Emily wrote: "Oh, I didn't know that. Many of us in another group did those symbols about a year ago. I didn't realize it didn't translate everywhere. Interesting. However, when I take it to WORD and enlarge it, it looks more like the ying/yang symbol for male/female than the theatrical mask I associate with tragedy/comedy.

Fame at last? Soon the British Library, along with Amazon, will be capturing your GR reviews, tweets etc etc etc:-In addition to your reviews etc being hijacked by Amazon, they may soon be 'captured' by the British Library:-

Not mine, Madge, yours. I have no reviews or tweets, and I would advise everyone here to remove what they can, and switch your user name to something not associated with your real name. This was one of 2 sites where I know my info was safe, so that leaves just one. Www.ravelry.com is run by 5 young programmers-cum-knitters, not a major corp. It's THE site for crocheters and knitters to share patterns, yarns and techniques, and socialize too.
People who go on Facebook and Twitter have known for years that their info is not private. "I told you so" is not a civil thing to say, but I knew it would start blowing up in everyone's face eventually.
But, yes, we did feel safer here. Grrr......
I don't think the Brit Library has any nefarious plan in mind, but they have to take privacy into account. Madge, if you have any way of contacting them, do so and advise all your friends to do so.Ooh-ooh, I can't wait for my 15 minutes of fame...

For those in the NYC metro area: tonight channel 13, 9 PM, Hound of the Baskervilles, with Peter Cushing. My brother and I ate up huge amounts of Hammer Films in the '50's and '60's.

Hi Guys - I'm a bit behind in my reading. As you know, Massachusetts has been in a bit of an uproar. Hubby is a marathon runner. Yes, he was in Boston. Luckily he's fine.
I meant to email you yesterday Deborah - thought of you as soon as I heard the terrible news because I knew hubby would be there. Glad to know all is well with you if not with many other folks:(

I was very lucky. I didn't know it was happening until hubby called to tell me he was ok so there was not a time of worry that he was involved. My heart is broken for those involved. I feel really lucky because I usually go and would have been right in that area.

Deborah, I'm glad that your husband is all right. Was he able to finish the run? Today many runners are remembering the victims by running for Boston. I did my run early this morning, wearing yellow and blue.
Thinking back over the last 20 years, I think we have enough local nut-jobs to balance our defense against Al Qaeda.
And probably by Americans with assault rifles and guns.I don't think the Boston bombing was by Al Qaeda. The bombs were too crude, indicating maybe they were made by individuals, not organized groups. And no terrorist group has claimed responsibility for them yet. Some local nut.
MadgeUK wrote: "I don't think Al Queda exists any more, just disparate groups with grievances."I haven't followed closely enough to know whether U.S. law enforcement and security agencies would agree with you or not. I just listened to Craig Unger's House of Bush, House of Saud: The Secret Relationship Between the World's Two Most Powerful Dynasties, an audio I had picked up in some book store bargain box and never gotten around to playing. Regardless of how accurate or inaccurate Unger's account may be, I was reminded that there are many powerful transactions beyond the day-to-day eyes of our lives.

Has anyone heard from Deborah? Is all well with her and hubby (and Madison) after the traumatic events in her city?

I have to say that I'm very concerned about Amazon taking over Goodreads. First, it instantly explained why book swap was eliminated. If you can swap books on the cheap, you won't buy Amazon books. I don't have a kindle, nor do I want one. I have a nook and an iPad. I've loved this forum and it's brought me such joy through the discussions, choices of the reading groups, and friends. I would hate to see any of that messed with.
