I pick up a new book as soon as I finish a book. I should let them sink in, but I do not. I also should write more reviews on GR, but I usually do not do that either.

I agree with that. "Thanks" to my considerable research, I have enough books in my to-read list that I can simply pick one up when I finish another.
I've always started reading a new book immediately after finishing a book. It gives me this almost.. grounded feeling. LOL :)
I always stagger my books so I'm never not reading something. If I finish a book before bed I generally have to start something immediately or else I won't be able to sleep. The worst is when I finish a book on the bus and I don't have a back-up immediately available. I then spend the rest of the ride glowering at everyone and I bite my boyfriend's head off upon walking in the door. (I am working on my anger issues... haha!)
I have to start a new book immeadiately! Even if I'm falling asleep when I finish one, I have to at least read a page or two of the next one. I ALWAYS carry a book with me everywhere I go.Once while spending the weekend with a friend, (who is a non-reader) I finished a book I brought with me and had to go a day and a half without a book...I was going nuts! Everyone thought I was crazy since I was scouring the house for ANY book to read. I learned that lesson the hard way and now leave a back-up book in my car!
I usually have 2 or 3 going at the same time so if I finish one I'll pick up one of the others I have going and then replace the finished one wherever it needs to be; bathroom, bedroom, living room, purse, well you get the idea.I always have one in my purse for those "waiting times" at the grocery store, post office, etc. I also get extremely testy if I don't have something to read so rather than grouse at everyone around me it's safer for everyone if I always have something to read.
I usually only read one at a time and have one waiting for me.I ALWAYS have one while waiting at a doctor's office...today I was waiting at least a half hour in the waiting room and another half hour in the room....got a lot read. :)
I pick a new book as soon as I finish a book. I will go through my burgeoning piles and select 4 or 5 I may want to read at this point. I read the inside cover and the first paragraph or so to decide what I am in the mood for. I keep 2 logs of 1 for the books I read and the other for the books I listen to.
I like to have a couple of books going at a time but when I finish a book that really touches or impacts me I generally have to start an easy meaningless book to kind of clear my head.
After I finish a book, I feel obliged to go over it and think about its significance (or lack thereof) before starting a new book. This usually lasts all of 4 minutes
I'm going through a multi-reading phase: I have a book to read on my bed-table, in the bathroom, on the sofa, and am going on with all of them according on where I'm spending my free time. So I find it difficult to say how long I usually wait before beginning a new book. It depends on how busy I am, anyway. Sometimes it might be a few minutes, other times a week or so.
If the book I am reading is a bit slow-going, then I read another book as well, so there is no gap between reading books. If the book is a good read then when I know I only have a day or two left I will line up my next book.
I try to be at least 100 pages in before starting something new. Unless, of course, I get something off my library queue I've been waiting for (these aren't renewable). And I start any new kids books requested by my 6yo. We have about 6 chapter books going at any time. Sometimes we even finish something before he loses interest. He's not into the wrapping up at all!!!
I've gotten a laugh out of many of these posts : )I especially love Fiona's comment about having to read a newspaper if she didn't have a book (UGH!!) and the comparison of books and shoes while traveling -- that's me too, you can't just bring one pair of shoes on a trip or just one book!
I get "ant-sy" if I'm not reading a book, but generally I do give myself about 2-3 days in between reads. I'm a lightweight compared to lots of you!
There's a guy I see on my evening bus occasionally who is always reading something too. I tend to break my neck to see what book he has, though I've never talked to him. One day while waiting for the bus I saw him reading Sense and Sensibility. He finished it before the bus came; he put Austen in one jacket pocket and pulled from the other pocket Philip K. Dick's The Man in the High Castle and immediately started reading that, which I thought was an incredibly strange choice after Austen - but I tend to read a variety of different books with no rhyme or reason so he's apparently the same way. I'm curious to know what he would say in this thread. :)If I wasn't in a committed relationship I would probably think we were a match made in heaven.

I'm usually dying to finish a book just because I've got another one I really want to start reading. I also upload audio-books in my mp3 player when I'm traveling rather than carry around books. I love buying books as holiday souvenirs, especially if I'm going out of the country.

I am usually reading several books at the same time, and they're staggered so I'm rarely not in the process of reading anything at all.But I do like to wait a few days between books in a series. It seems to me like books in a series generally do not pick up immediately where the last book left off, so I feel like I took a break along with the characters. I recently read two books of a series back-to-back and was initially very confused, because the second book started an entire year after the first had ended.
What's it like to not be reading a book???I wouldn't want to be in the position to not have another book going. I love being lost in a novel or learing something from non-fiction. Since I usually have at least 2-3 books going at a time I never have a dull moment ;-).
I usually start another one within the day. Especially in the summer. I usually read a lot in the summer.
As soon as I can read another one. I do but it definitely depends on the mood of what genre I want to read.
I rarely take much time to ponder the book I have just finished unless it was so wonderful that I read every word about the author, who designed the book cover, etc. I jump right to my next choice which is premeditated!
I tend to take a few minute to reflect on whatever I just read and decide what I shall say in my GR review, so I tend to wait maybe half an hour to an hour. I totlly know what people mean about bringing back up books when one is about to finish one! I just went on a week long vacation and brought 5 books with me, which turned out to be a good thing--I'm starting to read one collection of stories/poetry along with whatever novel at the time, so I made a good deal of progress on Tolkien's Gown, but alos finished Great Expectations and started The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray.I also tend to unshelve the books I plan on reading soon and keep them in a stack near the bed :)
I used to stack them near the bed, until the stack grew high enough to trip over. Now I have them lined on the stairs. The closer to the top, the longer they'll wait to be read; nearest the bottom first. Right hand side is Non-Fiction and left hand side is Fiction
I can't store books on any kind of floorspace because I accidentally step on them. I tend to stack the books on this weird crate/shelf thing or the trunk, both of which are right by the bed.
I thought about getting a storage shed for storing books, but its too far away to walk when you need a good book at 2 a.m. ---maybe I should store less necessary items in the shed; clothes, dishes, bedding...you know...stuff you don't need regularly.
Commenting on the storage discussion: We go to our local wine store and if they are throwing the wooden wine crates away, they give them to us. We have about half a dozen around the apartment - they are sturdy, attractive and great conversation piece if you are a wine lover!! We store anywhere from 12-24 books in each.
If I have the time, I'll start a new book immediately. I just finished the 4th Sookie book and unfortunately brought the 6th instead of the 5th with me to work. Now I have to wait until tonight to start. Very frustrating!
Five minutes. :D I usually start reading the next book on the same day unless I finish it just before going to sleep.
As soon as I finish one, I'm on to the next...unless I don't have anything to read, which rarely happens
I am so glad to see that other people do what I do. I read several books at a time. Depending on how good the book is - I will read it right away. Unfortunately, sometimes I get into a book and put it down and then put it down and it takes me a while to get back into it. I have a to-read/most-likely to be next pile that I get from my library and move to my bedside bookshelf. I can't even lie and say I don't have 4 of these piles. I am even reading a how to cookbook - some books are better read slowly so I can digest and analyze the material.

I have a stack on my end table, another on the floor and a shelf dedicated to my "unread" books. I'll have to start another floor stack soon, but can't open my end table drawers now, as it is, so maybe the stairs...
Nah, almost nothing. Or because I hated (disliked) the previous book so I want something good to read and relax, or because I so loved the book that I´m depressed it isn´t true, so I need something to wake up from the "nightmare" and think about something else. The second option is the hardest cause usually I just want to re-read it again and again and again...
Since I have tons and tons of books and seem to still find more to get, I dont wait. I read several at a time and as I finish one, I just pick another up off the to read pile and start it to read along with the others I am working on.
Fairly instantly. Don't really see why you would wait... Sometimes i skim through a book tht i've enjoyed after i've finished it but before i start another, just to solidify some of the action and details in my memory, particularly if its a library book tht i have to return. Otherwise i don't wait to start then next book. Why would you?
Maybe it's just my OCD, but I HAVE to update my Goodreads as SOON as I finish a book, and never have my "currently reading" bookshelf empty. I will start a new one as soon as I finish!
I am the same way Jessica! I think I'm also a bit weird thoughin that I really like to write my reviews immediately after I finish something.
It depends on the book. Sometimes, very rarely, a book is sooo good I feel it is only right to give myself some due diligence to chew over everything I just read. That said, I still start my next book almost immediately if not sooner. My TBR list is growing way longer by the day. I don't have time NOT to move on...
