What's On Your Pull List?

I, Vampire started out great and then went downhill but I stuck with it. Overall I liked it. I love the first artistl Andrea Sorrentino iirc. The first two trades are out.
I'm interested in Swamp Thing, Batwoman, and now Batgirl too. A trans character?!"
My partner and I visited a comic store in Des Moines during a recent trip to Iowa and bought the first trade of Revival and loves it. We're both doing a version of the "Cunt Challenge" - only reading books written by women (and queer men), but I've made some exceptions within my comics reading. I think I'll borrow her copy of Revival and see if I want to follow it.
In issue 19 of Batgirl, Barbara Gordon's newly introduced supportive activist flatmate came out as trans. Although technically, Wanda from A Game of You in Sandman was the first trans woman in a mainstream comic, I guess because it was printed by Vertigo it's not considered legit? Anyway, people in comics who defy gender norms are usually fetishized, misgendered, brutalized, the victims of some magic "trap" curse, or in Gaiman's case, denied their right to moon magick and then killed. Author and trans woman Imogen Binnie has a good critique/review of that book here.
So far I think Gail Simone is handling the character with integrity, but we'll see what happens. She was fired from the book right before she planned to introduce the character's trans status and then re-hired just in time due to outcry from fans.

I wanted to look into Daredevil too because David Mack has worked on it.

I'll be putting it on my pull list for sure!

Thanks for the info on trans characters. I'm interested in finding more lgbt characters in comics. So if you have anything to recommend...
I'm reading Batwoman (lesbian) and tried Strangers in Paradise (bisexual) but didn't care for the latter.

Did you read The Alchemy? It was so strange but I loved it.

I'm considering Journey into Mystery myself, because I like Norse mythology and I'm interested in Sif. I don't know any of the Thor background in comics though so I'd be jumping in blind.

Wow, that looks AND sounds good. "The last love story ever told." I'm a sucker for romance and that cover is gorgeous. So much color.
Anna (Bananas!) wrote: "Manette, I love David Mack to pieces. :D Kabuki was the first comic I ever read. I bought two of Mack's Daredevil trades featuring Echo a while back but haven't read them yet. He wrote one and wrot..."
I haven't gotten to the Alchemy yet. I'm waiting for Metamorphosis and Scarab to arrive (hopefully Monday!!!!!). But I did look through it and the art looks really interesting. I love seeing how he applies different styles to each book. I keep looking at them thinking "I wonder if I could do that..."

Are you an artist?

My pre-coffee eyes just popped wide open and my heart started racing when I saw "Alice in Batmanland" and thought it was a new thing.
The Cunt Challenge has been great. I started it at the beginning of this year as a one-year thing, but I realize now that I've been focusing on to-read lists of writers who are women that it will carry over into next year and beyond. I just won't be so strict about it. Technically it's "limiting" but that's sort of the point. Typically it's women writers who are hugely limited and we as readers/consumers - even those of us who identify as feminists - end up all too easily having our worldviews shaped by men. As I've mentioned recently in the Women in Comics thread, it's really gotten tough when reading comics. I think I could pretty easily read every decently-reviewed comic written by a woman within a year, whereas I could spend my entire life catching up on all the comics that are considered great written by men. I know that's not because men have better ideas.
Are some of y'all getting excited for the return of Locke and Key, Saga, and Sandman?
Anna (Bananas!) wrote: "I hope you enjoy Metamorphosis. That's my favorite. I haven't read Scarab yet, mainly because I'm not a fan of black and white art. I got spoiled by those beautiful watercolors. I think another art..."
I love colored works but am always more drawn in by the b&w. I'm not an artist but have started working on my own graphic novel. The art is the biggest hurdle because I want to do it myself.

I was excited about Sandman! Already added it to my pull list.

Does anyone know of a place online to get back issues? I've tried tfaw.com but I'm looking at birds of prey and suicide squad (new 52) and they mostly have recent stuff. I know I can get volumes but I'd rather everything match. Other places I've looked at the issues seem kind of expensive and the local store I like mostly just has new issues and volumes.

Are you just looking for paper copies or are you open to downloading digital comics? I get every comic I could ever want digitally at The Pirate Bay and from there I decide which trades to buy as physical objects. Some might judge me for this but I don't think it's much different from using the library.
I want physical copies. I already have a lot of digital copies.

Manette - have you tried Ebay? Different comic book stores? I'd imagine there must be more than just one where you are, if you give a call around somebody might be able to scare some up for you.
I have been keeping an eye on mycomicshop.com and eBay. We have three awesome used bookstores that have a lot. It's just a master of looking because nothing's organized. One of my local store has a lot of back issues but I've been there before and wasn't very impressed

I'm reading Saga digitally because it is so pretty and I like to zoom in - buying trades for my shelf. LOVE IT.
Anyone else psyched for Pretty Deadly? It sounds awesome! But I'm a sucker for anything that personifies death.

Chimney - there's so many GREAT suggestions of what you could branch out to. What sort of (non-superhero) thing do you like? TV shows, movies, books, etc? I bet I could pair you up with at least one thing you'd like.

I'm going to suggest a few darker/mystery/dystopia/broaching on horror for you:
1. Desolation Jones: Made in England. The worst part about this book is that there's only one trade paperback, and a few issues that came out after that. It's heavier on the sci-fi, absolutely crazy, he's a detective that works for an underground community of ex-intelligence people.
2. Transmetropolitan. This is dystopian, funny, witty, sci-fi. Stars Spider Jerusalem who is heavily based on Hunter S Thompson, except it's the future and shit be crazy. The first TP is good, but after that it really finds its stride.
3. Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire. These, I believe, are all out in TP now, the run ended last year. It's set in a world after a plague that wipes out all humans, except the children that are human animal hybrids. Also a darker story, Lemire is one of my favourite storytellers, and the colourist (Jose Villarrubia) is also my favourite colourist. Both are currently working on a new short series called Trillium that just released issue one, so if you like Sweet Tooth, I'd suggest picking up that one as well.
You also can't go wrong with some ongoing stories out there right now: Saga, Lazarus, and Fatale would be my suggestions. Saga, I'm sure you've heard everybody ooohing and aaahing over (and with just cause). Lazarus is quite dark, is set in sort-of near future, and features a lot of biomedical stuff, with a bit of a cyberpunk sensibility. Fatale is very dark. It's 50's mystery pulp meets Lovecraftian horror.
Saga and Fatale both have trade paperbacks out now. Lazarus is on issue 3 (just came out Wednesday) so your comic book store can probably order in the couple of back issues if they don't have them in stock.
Let me know if you're already reading some of those and want more suggestions ;).

My current pull list stands at:
Saga
Avengers Arena
Katana
Batgirl
Powerpuff Girls
Rocket Girl
Rat Queens
Pretty Deadly
Death Sentence
Sex Criminals
Lazarus
The True Life of the Fabulous Killjoys
I think that's everything.

Death Sentence, Pretty Deadly, Lazarus, and Saga are on my list too.

I'm enjoying Rocket Girl, I only picked it up because the art was pretty but it drew me in pretty quickly.
I finally got around to reading the first couple of the Killjoys and I love it, it's a good story but I think knowing the last MCR album helps add to my enjoyment.
I have laughed loads at the first two issues of Rat Queens, it is right up my alley, all sex and booze and strong women in a fantasy setting. I'm loving it.
I was blown away by Pretty Deadly and Sex Criminals, I didn't think comics could be this good and not be all about capes and doing the right thing.

May have to try this Fatel or Fables many of you have named.

- Thor: God of Thunder
- Black Widow (yeah, so glad she got her own title)
- Serenity (the new six-issue series that started)
- Injustice: Year Two (my brother's collecting it but I read it too)

Anyone excited about Deadpool #27?! :D

And after reading through this thread, I have more that I will be adding to the list.

Fatale should definitely be a priority - Brubaker and Phillips are one of my favourite teams of all time, and Fatale is spectacular.
