Fatale should definitely be a priority - Brubaker and Phillips are one of my favourite teams of all time, and Fatale is spectacular.

Anna (Bananas!) wrote: "Kelly, I saw Sheltered and I'll be buying it next week! I remembered that great cover from Image ads."

You will not be sorry!

Ma'Belle (linguisticness) | 54 comments Anna (Bananas!) wrote: "I like Revival although I'm half buying it for the Jenny Frison covers. Maybe try a trade to see how you like it?

I, Vampire started out great and then went downhill but I stuck with it. Overall I liked it. I love the first artistl Andrea Sorrentino iirc. The first two trades are out.

I'm interested in Swamp Thing, Batwoman, and now Batgirl too. A trans character?!"

My partner and I visited a comic store in Des Moines during a recent trip to Iowa and bought the first trade of Revival and loves it. We're both doing a version of the "Cunt Challenge" - only reading books written by women (and queer men), but I've made some exceptions within my comics reading. I think I'll borrow her copy of Revival and see if I want to follow it.

In issue 19 of Batgirl, Barbara Gordon's newly introduced supportive activist flatmate came out as trans. Although technically, Wanda from A Game of You in Sandman was the first trans woman in a mainstream comic, I guess because it was printed by Vertigo it's not considered legit? Anyway, people in comics who defy gender norms are usually fetishized, misgendered, brutalized, the victims of some magic "trap" curse, or in Gaiman's case, denied their right to moon magick and then killed. Author and trans woman Imogen Binnie has a good critique/review of that book here.

So far I think Gail Simone is handling the character with integrity, but we'll see what happens. She was fired from the book right before she planned to introduce the character's trans status and then re-hired just in time due to outcry from fans.

I wanted to look into Daredevil too because David Mack has worked on it.

Kelly (xitomatl) Just a heads up for everybody - Jeff Lemire (for all of you that loved Sweet Tooth) has a new comic coming out through Vertigo that starts on August 7th that I know I'm super excited about! It's call Trillium and it's a limited run (8 issues), and I bet it'll be amazing!

I'll be putting it on my pull list for sure!

Batsap | 45 comments I've just added Journey Into Mystery to my pull list. I wanted to add Marvel's Marvel Now Thor comic, but it was halfway through a story arc and I didn't want to come in so late. I'm just starting to get into Thor and that world, does anyone have a recommendation for the order I should read Thor graphic novels in to get caught up with what's been going on? So far I have read J Michael Straczynski's volume 1.

message 156: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Chim, I like the sound of Alice in the Batmanland. :) I've started paying more attention to Colorists. They have a huge impact on the feel of a comic but they don't seem to get as much attention as artists.

message 157: by Anna (Bananas) (last edited Aug 03, 2013 03:43PM) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Mabel, how long are you doing this Cunt Challenge? Is it limiting or have you enjoyed it?

Thanks for the info on trans characters. I'm interested in finding more lgbt characters in comics. So if you have anything to recommend...

I'm reading Batwoman (lesbian) and tried Strangers in Paradise (bisexual) but didn't care for the latter.

message 158: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Manette, I love David Mack to pieces. :D Kabuki was the first comic I ever read. I bought two of Mack's Daredevil trades featuring Echo a while back but haven't read them yet. He wrote one and wrote/drew the other.

Did you read The Alchemy? It was so strange but I loved it.

I'm considering Journey into Mystery myself, because I like Norse mythology and I'm interested in Sif. I don't know any of the Thor background in comics though so I'd be jumping in blind.

Wow, that looks AND sounds good. "The last love story ever told." I'm a sucker for romance and that cover is gorgeous. So much color.

I haven't gotten to the Alchemy yet. I'm waiting for Metamorphosis and Scarab to arrive (hopefully Monday!!!!!). But I did look through it and the art looks really interesting. I love seeing how he applies different styles to each book. I keep looking at them thinking "I wonder if I could do that..."

message 162: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments I hope you enjoy Metamorphosis. That's my favorite. I haven't read Scarab yet, mainly because I'm not a fan of black and white art. I got spoiled by those beautiful watercolors. I think another artist does Scarab too.

Are you an artist?

My pre-coffee eyes just popped wide open and my heart started racing when I saw "Alice in Batmanland" and thought it was a new thing.

The Cunt Challenge has been great. I started it at the beginning of this year as a one-year thing, but I realize now that I've been focusing on to-read lists of writers who are women that it will carry over into next year and beyond. I just won't be so strict about it. Technically it's "limiting" but that's sort of the point. Typically it's women writers who are hugely limited and we as readers/consumers - even those of us who identify as feminists - end up all too easily having our worldviews shaped by men. As I've mentioned recently in the Women in Comics thread, it's really gotten tough when reading comics. I think I could pretty easily read every decently-reviewed comic written by a woman within a year, whereas I could spend my entire life catching up on all the comics that are considered great written by men. I know that's not because men have better ideas.

Are some of y'all getting excited for the return of Locke and Key, Saga, and Sandman?

I love colored works but am always more drawn in by the b&w. I'm not an artist but have started working on my own graphic novel. The art is the biggest hurdle because I want to do it myself.

Mabel wrote:Are some of y'all getting excited for the return of Locke and Key, Saga, and Sandman?

I was excited about Sandman! Already added it to my pull list.

message 166: by [deleted user] (new)

Does anyone know of a place online to get back issues? I've tried tfaw.com but I'm looking at birds of prey and suicide squad (new 52) and they mostly have recent stuff. I know I can get volumes but I'd rather everything match. Other places I've looked at the issues seem kind of expensive and the local store I like mostly just has new issues and volumes.

message 167: by Ma'Belle (new)

Ma'Belle (linguisticness) | 54 comments Manette wrote: "Does anyone know of a place online to get back issues?"

Are you just looking for paper copies or are you open to downloading digital comics? I get every comic I could ever want digitally at The Pirate Bay and from there I decide which trades to buy as physical objects. Some might judge me for this but I don't think it's much different from using the library.

message 168: by [deleted user] (new)

I want physical copies. I already have a lot of digital copies.

message 169: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) Mabel - I am so excited for Saga. It's probably my favourite comic since Sweet Tooth ended last year.

Manette - have you tried Ebay? Different comic book stores? I'd imagine there must be more than just one where you are, if you give a call around somebody might be able to scare some up for you.

message 170: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Mycomicshop.com has normal prices for comics and I've been able to find most comics I want there.

message 171: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) I didn't know about that site - thanks Anna (or perhaps I shouldn't be thanking you, hah!).

message 172: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Now you can find ALL the comics you want. You'll drown in comic happiness. Mwa ha ha ha ha

message 173: by [deleted user] (new)

I have been keeping an eye on mycomicshop.com and eBay. We have three awesome used bookstores that have a lot. It's just a master of looking because nothing's organized. One of my local store has a lot of back issues but I've been there before and wasn't very impressed

message 174: by Jodie (last edited Jan 29, 2014 04:50PM) (new)

Jodie | 5 comments Hi :) Here's my current pull:
Fatale
Rachel Rising
Chew *favorite
The Walking Dead
The Wake
Lazarus
Trillium
Satellite Sam
(edit to add):
Sex Criminals
Pretty Deadly
Velvet
(Edit again to add):
Dead Body Road
Deadly Class

I'm reading Saga digitally because it is so pretty and I like to zoom in - buying trades for my shelf. LOVE IT.

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Image! :)

message 176: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (darthval) Superman Unchained.

message 177: by [deleted user] (new)

Anyone else psyched for Pretty Deadly? It sounds awesome! But I'm a sucker for anything that personifies death.

message 178: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) Yes! I am also psyched for Pretty Deadly! I already told the guys at my comic book store to put it on my pull list.

Chimney - there's so many GREAT suggestions of what you could branch out to. What sort of (non-superhero) thing do you like? TV shows, movies, books, etc? I bet I could pair you up with at least one thing you'd like.

message 179: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Haven't heard of Pretty Deadly but now I'm curious. Same thing with Superman Unchained - interesting title.

message 180: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) Haha, that's great! Sure gives a lot to go on and I know some other members will read it and will pipe up with some suggestions for you.

I'm going to suggest a few darker/mystery/dystopia/broaching on horror for you:

1. Desolation Jones: Made in England. The worst part about this book is that there's only one trade paperback, and a few issues that came out after that. It's heavier on the sci-fi, absolutely crazy, he's a detective that works for an underground community of ex-intelligence people.

2. Transmetropolitan. This is dystopian, funny, witty, sci-fi. Stars Spider Jerusalem who is heavily based on Hunter S Thompson, except it's the future and shit be crazy. The first TP is good, but after that it really finds its stride.

3. Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire. These, I believe, are all out in TP now, the run ended last year. It's set in a world after a plague that wipes out all humans, except the children that are human animal hybrids. Also a darker story, Lemire is one of my favourite storytellers, and the colourist (Jose Villarrubia) is also my favourite colourist. Both are currently working on a new short series called Trillium that just released issue one, so if you like Sweet Tooth, I'd suggest picking up that one as well.

You also can't go wrong with some ongoing stories out there right now: Saga, Lazarus, and Fatale would be my suggestions. Saga, I'm sure you've heard everybody ooohing and aaahing over (and with just cause). Lazarus is quite dark, is set in sort-of near future, and features a lot of biomedical stuff, with a bit of a cyberpunk sensibility. Fatale is very dark. It's 50's mystery pulp meets Lovecraftian horror.

Saga and Fatale both have trade paperbacks out now. Lazarus is on issue 3 (just came out Wednesday) so your comic book store can probably order in the couple of back issues if they don't have them in stock.

Let me know if you're already reading some of those and want more suggestions ;).

message 181: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments I'm curious to see what you think of Jupiter's Legacy and esp Lazarus. I read the first issue of Jupiter and although I'm not sold on it yet I bought isse 2. Lazarus on the other hand already seems awesome with awesomesauce.

message 182: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Also, you must try Saga!! It's my favorite new series of the year by far.

message 183: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Oh and Sheltered, which Kelly rec'd to me, had a fantastic and twisted first issue. It's Image and may be worth a try for you.

message 184: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) Yes Sheltered! Ed Brisson is seriously a favourite writer of mine (everybody should check out http://www.murderbookcomic.com/, where you can read some of his comics for free!).

My current pull list stands at:

Saga
Avengers Arena
Katana
Batgirl
Powerpuff Girls
Rocket Girl
Rat Queens
Pretty Deadly
Death Sentence
Sex Criminals
Lazarus
The True Life of the Fabulous Killjoys

I think that's everything.

message 186: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments I want to check out Rocket Girl. Looks promising! I picked up a few issues of Killjoys too but haven't read them yet. What do you think so far?

Death Sentence, Pretty Deadly, Lazarus, and Saga are on my list too.

message 187: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments My single issues are starting to pile up, so I'm thinking of holding out for trades on some of my comics too. The shiny newness always pulls me in though.

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 305 comments Mod
I'm enjoying Rocket Girl, I only picked it up because the art was pretty but it drew me in pretty quickly.

I finally got around to reading the first couple of the Killjoys and I love it, it's a good story but I think knowing the last MCR album helps add to my enjoyment.

I have laughed loads at the first two issues of Rat Queens, it is right up my alley, all sex and booze and strong women in a fantasy setting. I'm loving it.

I was blown away by Pretty Deadly and Sex Criminals, I didn't think comics could be this good and not be all about capes and doing the right thing.

message 189: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments I'm intrigued. Gotta check out Rat Queens and Sex Criminals now. I hadn't heard of either before.

message 190: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) You guys might want to check out Velvet if your fans of Fatale - Brubaker is writing that one as well and it's about espionage with a female spy at the centre of it.

I just picked up velvet, I quite liked it.

message 192: by Charmy (new)

Charmy | 9 comments Thief of Thieves
Ultimate Comics X-men
Chew
Transmetrolpolitan

(Not sure the rule distinction of Comic v. Graphic Novel

May have to try this Fatel or Fables many of you have named.

message 193: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) A bit of an update on my pull list as some series finished and I've dropped a few. The titles on my pull list are:

- Thor: God of Thunder
- Black Widow (yeah, so glad she got her own title)
- Serenity (the new six-issue series that started)
- Injustice: Year Two (my brother's collecting it but I read it too)

message 194: by Keliani (new)

Keliani (requiemorelegy) Rat Queens, Pretty Deadly, Saga and Deadpool: The Gauntlet #6. Got a glipse of Killjoys and it seems really nice. I might check out Desolation Jones and Locke&Key's recent issue, not sure right now.

Anyone excited about Deadpool #27?! :D

message 195: by Jodie (new)

Jodie | 5 comments Been a while so I thought I'd update. I keep telling myself I won't add to my pull unless I drop something but everything is so good! I read non-superhero. Here's my current pull:

Fatale
Rachel Rising
Chew (*favorite!)
Saga
The Walking Dead
The Wake
Lazarus
Trillium
Sex Criminals
Pretty Deadly
Velvet
Dead Body Road
Deadly Class
And Veil

message 196: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments I'm loving Lazarus and Saga. Pretty Deadly started out well but I need to read more.

message 197: by Carol (new)

Carol (kawie1) Ok, the comic book culture is nigh on non-existent in Ireland (where I'm from) especially outside of the big cities (Dublin, Cork, Belfast) so I'm quite new to the whole scene. In fact, until right now I didn't know what a pull list was. So, here's mine, short and all as it is:
The Walking Dead (got me into comics)
Fables

That's it. I was reading Invincible as well but I didn't love it.

message 198: by Bob (new)

Bob Should we also have a catogory where we list the comic book trades that we collect? I myself on some titles I collect the single issues but on others I collect the trades. Just wondering. Thanks. :)

message 199: by Janice (last edited Apr 20, 2014 03:21PM) (new)

Janice Right now my list is:
The Unwritten
Angel and Faith
Buffy
The Walking Dead
American Vampire
Firefly

And after reading through this thread, I have more that I will be adding to the list.

That's what I did. I only get single issues if it is a special, like the two one-shots for Locke and Key, or the specials they did for Walking Dead that won't be included in the hardcovers.
