Gudrun Mouw | 2 comments From Ashes Into Light

Announcing my book From Ashes Into Light published this last week. Yes, it is a holocaust story, but also a story of spiritual awakening and the conversion of a young woman to Judaism. For anyone interested in Jewish Speculative Fiction.

Thanks!
Gudrun

Joanzlotnick | 7 comments I like the way you describe your book. It echoes my description of my e-novel, GRIEFWRITING, which is available on amazon. com. I explain that it is about caregiving and loss, but also a story of the reinvention of the self after traumatic loss. That "but also" is so important! In case you want to check it out, I'm including a link to amazon.

Maggie Anton | 41 comments Announcing my new book Fifty Shades of Talmud: What the First Rabbis Had to Say about You-Know-What.

Taking a break from fiction, best-selling author Maggie Anton takes her Talmudic expertise to bring you a short, 120-page, book that Prof David Biale of UC Davis, author of Eros and the Jews, praises, saying: "The only thing more surprising and amusing than Maggie Anton's book on sex in the Talmud is the Talmud itself. Anton shows us how the ancient rabbis—no prudes among them!—explored every angle of human sexuality with humor and insight that feel entirely modern."

Amusing. Seductive. Stimulating. We're talking about the Talmud? That's right. Take fifty actual Talmudic discussions, mix in pithy sayings (appropriate and inappropriate) by luminaries from Mae West and Amy Schumer to George Washington and Gandhi, add a few cartoons, and voila—delighted and enlightened readers will come away with a new perspective on what the ancient Jewish sages say about our most intimate relationships.

In this lighthearted, in-depth tour of sexuality within the Talmud, come eavesdrop at the first rabbis' locker-room door as they discuss every aspect of sexual relations—how, when, where, with whom—often in startlingly explicit fashion. Author Maggie Anton reveals how Jewish tradition is more progressive in many respects, and more bawdy, than one might think. The award-winning historical novelist's first foray into nonfiction is likely to leave her fans going OMG, WTF, and even LOL.

Sasha Margolis (sashamargolis) Hi everyone,
My new novel The Tsimbalist:

At once a thrilling whodunnit, a maddening romance, and an invigorating plunge into history, The Tsimbalist is a tale of Jews and Russians, depicting their complicated friendships, their dangerous enmities, and their illicit loves, all seen through the eyes of Avrom, a barber, musician, all-around mensch, and born detective.

The year is 1871. The inhabitants of Balativke live in delicate balance – until a young Russian aristocrat is found murdered near the home of Koppel, a poor Jew. With the police unable to unravel the mystery of the aristocrat’s murder, and blame falling upon Koppel amid a rising tide of anti-Jewish feeling, a desperate Avrom attempts to prevent disaster for his community by searching out the truth himself.

Learning as much about the people he lives among as he does about the slain Arkady Olegovich Efimovski, Avrom finds that few are who they seem. But could one of his neighbors really be a murderer?

Available from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Tsimbalist-Sash...

and as an e-book from iBooks, barnesandnoble, Amazon, kobo

Thanks!

Anthony Ferner | 1 comments Hello everyone,

My short novel, Winegarden, was published last autumn by Holland Park Press. It's about an agnostic British Jew who struggles with life, love, loss, and the complexities of being Jewish. It's at heart a love story, with thought experiments involving cats, zombies, and golems. One critic called it 'oddly compelling' and another 'surprisingly compelling'; I'm still waiting for just 'compelling'...
Available direct from the publisher's website, where you can also read an extract (http://hollandparkpress.co.uk/book_de... for details), from selected UK bookshops, or from Amazon.

Maggie Anton | 41 comments A wonderful review of my new book Fifty Shades of Talmud: What the First Rabbis Had to Say about You-Know-What in the LA Jewish Journal. Here’s a excerpt:

Anton draws on her own deep knowledge of Jewish history and writing, as well as her sly sense of humor, to open our eyes to texts that sound more like they belong in a locker room than in a seminary.” The irony that suffuses her book is spoken aloud: “[A]ccording to the Torah … a Jewish man is both obligated to have sex, under certain circumstances, and forbidden to have sex, under other circumstances,” she explains. “This means the talmudic rabbis had to use their prodigious intellects to determine those precise circumstances — how, when, where, with whom?” Of course, this is hardly the first time that Anton has pushed the envelope on matters of gender in Jewish tradition.

Maggie Anton | 41 comments Happy Purim! I'm celebrating that Hadassah Magazine just posted a wonderful review of Fifty Shades of Talmud: What the First Rabbis Had to Say about You-Know-What. To whet your appetite here's an excerpt:

This delightful little gem of a book is recommended reading for any Jewish adult who has ever had or wanted to have sex. Non-Jews, too, will be fascinated, if not a bit envious learning about this aspect of our religion. Indeed, "Fifty Shades of Talmud" might be the perfect gift for that non-Jewish son- or daughter-in-law ... Augmented with cartoons and quotes about sex, "Fifty Shades of Talmud" gives us the skinny about "the how, when, where, and with whom" of sexual relations according to our Sages.

Something Is Rotten in Fettig, my humorous satirical novel about the prosecution of a kosher butcher in a fictitious Republic, was published last month by Anaphora Literary Press. It is largely based on my experiences as a civil rights attorney with the ACLU National Prison Project and other public interest programs and observations while growing-up in a colorful Jewish neighborhood. Five free books will be selected in a Goodreads Giveaway campaign that ends the middle of April.

message 427: by Reuven (new)

Reuven Klein | 2 comments I published a book entitled Lashon HaKodesh: History, Holiness, & Hebrew by Mosaica Press.
Lashon HaKodesh History, Holiness, & Hebrew by Reuven Chaim Klein
Here's my publisher's press release:
Throughout Jewish literature, the Hebrew language is referred to as Lashon HaKodesh. Its history, origins, decline, and rebirth are simply fascinating. Furthermore, at its deepest level, Lashon HaKodesh is called such (“the Holy Language”) because it is intrinsically sacred – and is thus unlike any other language known to Man.

Lashon HaKodesh: History, Holiness, & Hebrew seeks to understand the holiness of Lashon HaKodesh, follows its history, and focuses on the significance of Aramaic and other ‘Jewish languages’ such as Yiddish and Ladino. An extended section is devoted to Modern Hebrew, its controversies, and its implications from a religious perspective. This unique work delves into the linguistic history of each ‘Jewish language’, as well as the philological, Kabbalistic, and Halachic approaches to this topic taken by various Rabbinic figures through the ages. The author also compares and contrasts traditional Jewish views to those of modern-day academia, offering proofs and difficulties to both approaches.

As the old saying goes, “Two Jews, three opinions.” In almost every chapter, more than one way of looking at the matter at hand is presented. In some cases, the differing opinions can be harmonized, but ultimately many matters remain subject to dispute. Hopefully, the mere knowledge of these sources will whet the reader’s intellectual curiosity to learn more.
Written by a brilliant young scholar, Lashon HaKodesh: History, Holiness, & Hebrew is ground-breaking, intriguing, and remarkable.

Philip Mann | 49 comments Jere, when you talk to your characters, do they talk back to you, or do they ignore you?

message 432: by Jere (new)

Jere Krakoff | 8 comments When I talked to my characters, which was often while writing the novel, they frequently scolded me for exaggerating their negative qualities or making them two, as opposed to three dimensional. As a general rule, I agreed with them and made the necessary corrections. Now that the book has been released, however, they seem to be ignoring them. Nevertheless, I continue to think about them often and miss their companionship.

Mirta Trupp | 75 comments Hello everyone. Becoming Malka is an historical fiction/ fantasy. It follows a modern-day, American young woman as she accidentally hurls herself back through time and lands in Ukraine. Set in Odessa, prior to the Russian Revolution, the story touches upon the plight of Russian Jews, as well as the history of Argentine Jews and their"Moses of the Americas"- Baron Maurice de Hirsch.

Using the fantasy of time travel, "BECOMING MALKA" is enchanting and enlightening at the same time, shedding light on Jewish mysticism, delighting period-drama fans with Victorian era traditions and providing historical details of the upper echelons of Russian Jews. Easy reading. Light and Clean. A great read for teens and adults.

Harry (harrycarie) | 2 comments The Holocaust–six million Jews murdered. Then the war is over, a remnant is saved, and all drift back into the normal world. But for those who survived and their children, it is never over. Duvid’s sons, Simon and his twin brother Adam, born in Israel, raised in Montreal, grow up haunted by their father’s memories. The secret stories from the war that they overhear in disconnected, whispered bits and pieces only create confusion. After the death of their father, they find strange writings on crumbling scraps of cloth, hidden in his father’s old valise. Are they clues to a hidden past, this past which their father always avoided talking about? Simon, his life torn apart by personal adversity, hopes also to discover something about himself in them. He doesn’t imagine, though, the wonders they will lead to: his father’s secret and surprising history, and its stunning results in the present. Shifting from the small town Jewish life of pre-war Poland to the wilds of Russia, from Europe to Montreal, and on to Israel, Gravitational Fields is a moving, lyrical story, an epic tale of family, adventure, survival, determination, and especially, love.

My historical fiction book, “La Descendencia” was translated and published in English on Amazon Kindle in 2015. "The Heritage" follows the story of two families who landed up in Latin America after they were forced to flee poverty and anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe in 1926. Nik Krasno Hi All,

Rise of an Oligarch by Carlito Sofer Rise of an Oligarch is free on kindle today only.
This is what it's about:

'The deal is on and Michael (Misha) is one step away from triumph! Almost six billion green crunchy dollar project is practically in his pocket. And then there is a shot that changes everything.....
Conspiracies, old scores, powerful enemies and the blurred lines between decency and corruption all surface. Packed with remarkable characters and exotic scenes, humorous and philosophical at times, Rise of an Oligarch is a historical fiction with elements of a thriller set against the background of the Big Bang of the USSR and a young Ukrainian state striving to embrace capitalist democracy.

This is the book that tycoons certainly don't want you to read.'

Hope you'll enjoy
