Here are the final tasks numbered 16-20!
Reading starts on 1 July 2013!

21) Read a book in which the main character stands out in some way/is different from the rest because they either have or lack something the others lack or have.
22) Read a book in which the main character is a leader of some sort. (Leads a family, a business, is in a board etc.)
23) Read a book with a prominent butler or maid or some other servant.
24) Read a book in which the main character is a member of the nobility.
25) Read any book that is somehow connected to the book in a way that is not mentioned in the first 24 tasks. You can make your own connection to the series so long as it isn't based on gender or nationality of the author or main characters.

If you have doubts if a book will count, just ask in this thread.

The books of the series itself will only count for bonuspoints and can not be used for the tasks.

This thread is for planning your challenge and updating your points. Please post your progress in a new message stating the book you've read and the task you read it for and not just in your planning.

Reading for these final 5 tasks will start on 1 July 2013 and the final day of reading will be on 31 October 2013. On 1 September I will open up the first 4 task topics and you can finish all the task that are unfinished.

Happy reading and good luck!

Any suggestions? I have not read any books from the PP series.
Can I use any of these:
- Changeless: major character does not age (eg. eternal youth, a god)
- Heartless: main character/villain is someone you'd consider heartless
- Blameless: main character is accused of something of which he/she is innocent.
- Book from a series where all the titles are similar eg. A Song of Ice and Fire (all book are A Something of Something)

The Blameless one is OK for your purpose. You are going to have fun when you get to the bonus books!

Location may be an easy one to manage so books set in London, Florence (Blameless), Scotland (Changeless), Egypt (Timeless) will all work.

You have some great ideas, Lauren, but some of it is already covered in a way. Your changeless idea was in a way used for the curse task. (view spoiler) the other ideas would work.

@Claudia: setting wouldn't work as we had to read a book set in Victorian England. That covers both setting as time period.

Remind me to post all the tasks in one place so we don't have to go back and forth between the different topics.

I am going to bed now since I have to get up ridicously early so I won't answer any more of your questions tonight. But I will be back tomorrow. Sweet dreams everybody!

Lauren Smith 23) Read a book with a prominent butler or maid or some other servant.

Would A Storm of Swords count? There are several warriors/knights who also function as servants - Jorah Mormont, Bronn, Brienne of Tarth (to Catelyn, sort of). And there's Hodor.

Alternatively, can I use it for the leader task?

As a leader it would definitely count. I am not so sure about the servant task. The knights are first knights and then serve a lord. They are not servants in the stricktest sense of the word. Hodder is also not really a servant.

The main character is a transvestite - I hope that is different enough for you? :)

message 23: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
What did the transvestite have or lack that the others lacked or had?

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
You said he had to stand out in some way. IMO a man dressed as a women when everyone else is dressed conventionally stands out.

message 25: by Lauren (Sugar & Snark) (last edited Jul 03, 2013 01:52PM) (new)

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
And he has the urge to dress as a women which most men lack?
Or I suppose you could also look at it the other way and say he/she has a penis which other "girls" lack. Lol :)

message 26: by Lauren (last edited Jul 04, 2013 04:24AM) (new)

Lauren Smith I was wondering about this too, because I was thinking of using a book where a character stood out because her family had been brutally murdered when she was a child, and it's made her into a kind of minor celebrity. I would have said she has the experience of escaping a multiple murder or losing her family to murder and she stands out as a result.

I would say the transvestite has the experience of being a transvestite, which most people lack.

But in my case, and possibly in Lauren F's, there are other similar people (people who've escaped multiple murders, transvestites) even if they don't appear on the page. Exactly how unique does the person have to be? And does having or lacking a defining experience count for this task?

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Yes it is most confusing. I had assumed that as long as the character was a unique one, with in the book and relatively within fiction I would be OK. But now I am not exactly sure what this task requires.

Finished No.25 Macrieve by Kresley Cole -Love and marriage between a Scottish Werewolf and a "not quite human" woman.

message 29: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I am still not sure myself and that is why I haven't answered yet. The task is based on the main character from the PPS. She is soulless and that gives her certain abilities but also a certain look at life. It is something she is because she was born that way. She also stands out because the way she looks. She has Italian features in a society that is up and top British.
That would mean that the survivor of the family murder is out since the murders are something that happened to her and not something she is and connot help being. Ok she can't change what happened but it is not what she is.
The transvestite is harder to decide on. On the one hand there are people who choose to be one for professional, religious and other reasons but there are also a lot of people who just are that way because they were born that way and cannot help being one whether they want to or not. It's just that in the Netherlands transvestites don't stand out that much. Which clouds my thinking about it. Also if the transvestite is in were would we stand on bisxual or homosexual people? Here they don't stand out at all, but they are in the same line of being different.

message 30: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith If the PPS character can count because she has Italian features in a British society, then presumably you'd have to consider context, so it doesn't matter whether transvestite/bisexual/homosexual people stand out in the Netherlands or anywhere else. Italian features aren't a big deal - that character only stands out because of the country she's in and she wouldn't even be the only person in the country to look like that. I just read a book with societies where strictly heterosexual women are extremely rare, and it wouldn't have made sense to compare that to our heteronormative societies. A straight female character would have stood out.

The have/lack thing still confuses me though. For the PPS character it's clear - she lacks a soul, she has Italian features. But you're also defining 'standing out' in terms of who/what a person is (like with the transvestite), but not in terms of having or lacking a defining experience (as in the case of the woman who's family was murdered). So what would you say the transvestite has or lacks? Alternatively, being a survivor of a multiple murder is who my character is,like being a cross-dresser is who the transvestite is. It's more than something that just happend to her, although it's not something she was born with. Does the character have to be born with the thing that sets them apart?

On a side note: I'm using the murder book for a different task; I'm just trying to get a grasp on the task so I know which of my future reads will count.

message 31: by Lauren (Sugar & Snark) (last edited Jul 04, 2013 05:21AM) (new)

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
The Transvestite works in my opinion because in the book he is notably treated differently/judged and his appearance is remarked upon. If he was a man dressed as a women who lived his life normally and no one knew/cared or commented it would IMO not count but that is not the case. The reason this character cross dresses is because he lost his mother at a very young age and wore her clothes as a child to feel close to her. It has nothing to do with sexuality.

If it help the character is also from New Zealand and living in Ireland. So that works for the different from everyone else thing too, in the same way as your "Italian features" does.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Sorry to be a pest Barbara but can I ask what book you were considering reading for this one? maybe that will give everyone a better idea of what exactly you had in mind. :D

message 33: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I don't feel bothered or pestered. It is just that I am also having a bit of trouble of grasping it. I thought it was clear for me but apparently it isn't. :)
Because it was based on the books I have it in my mind that it is some ability you have or lack or a physical feature. Like the main character stands out because her complexion is naturally dark and that is not done in the ton.

First I was thinking about reading My Soul To Take but now I am reading Ink and that qualifies too.

Let's make it easy on ourselves and let's say: if the character stands out in any significant way that makes them different form the other characters in the book and that standing out is something that is discussed it counts. So if you believe your character stands out than by all means use the book.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Yeah that makes sense to me. Especially the discussed by others part. Because certain difference, if they not acknowledged could just be the main character being self depreciating or insecure. Lol!

I am going to keep mine then. Because although the main character is quite happily a cross dresser, it does make him different and isolate him from others within the context of the story etc.
