Finished.

I read the books I had planned in message 26. Sorry that I haven't been updating as I read each but this is my worst time of year and I'm just tired. The season had finally finished but I only get a decent break after another 7 day week!

Thanks! The week is off to a good start as I got to use my favourite animal for interaction today. We also have a new puppy at home and I start fencing again tomorrow, with my new gear. The good things to look forward to help make it all possible.

Sorry I have been absent, but I have been doing some very necessary cleaning and job hunting.
I will update everything tomorrow and give everyone their new ranks.
Wow you have been fast, Emma. never expected you to be the first one and beat us all. Nice reading! Congrats!
I understand, Varla Fiona, that you have read all 5 tasks too? Congrats!

Not sure myself how I managed it Barbara. My son is the best little boy ever, everyone keeps telling me how good he is. He goes to bed at 6:30pm he cant make it any later. Wakes up around 6 0r 7 in the morning, I give him his milk first thing and hes off to sleep again for an hour. Then after playtime and lunch he has a nap for 2 hours. I guess hes like me and likes his sleep. So yes when hes awake its hectic but I do have plenty of time to read.:-)

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments Well done LAuren for finishing. I think I must have had an unfair advantage to finish first, either that or you were seriously ill or working very hard.

Well done :-)

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Thanks :) I Have been sick and not reading too much in the last 2 weeks but I also wasn't reading specifically for the challenge. I just read what I felt like and waited to see it they fit in. It made it quite interesting! Lol :)

message 171: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Well done guys!

Lol, it *is* strange to see someone other than Lauren F or Barbara finish a challenge first :)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I'm re-reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone :)
Please say Professor Quirrell's turban will work as a silly accessory! This task is getting me down.

Jennifer (jevine) | 937 comments Am reading The Kingdom by Clive Cussler

Would a balloon aircraft from 1660 be classified as unusual transport? The book deals with a balloon gondola being made for a Chinese emperor in the 1600s.

Hi Jennifer, I used an airship for my challenge and it was ok. I think there was another member that also used an airship, it is definately an unusual form of transport.

message 175: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh, I forgot about that task! I'm glad your query reminded me of it Jennifer, because I think I have one too.

In the book I'm reading, there are three angels who ride Equinas. These are basically heavenly horses on which earthly horses are based in the same way that humans are made in the image of god/angels. An Equina's stride is as long as a parsec.
Would that count?

Oh, that book sounds interesting, Lauren. What is it?

@Lauren F: Congrats! I will try to do an update again later this week. I have been sick again with the normal flu this time and haven't been able to do one earlier.

@Claudia: If no one has any objections I will allow the turban on the basis that it isn't normal wizard attire and Professor Quirrell doesn't seem to come from somewhere where it is normal to wear one.

@Jennifer: A balloon aircraft is certainly unusual and can be used for the challenge.

@Lauren S: Equinas can be used too.

message 178: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith @Varla Fiona - it's The Six-Gun Tarot by R.S. Belcher (published today actually). Not too bad so far.

I might steal your idea Claudia, since I haven't found anything for that task and HP is always an easy reread. Or I might just see what Etiquette and Espionage has to offer. Maybe there is something similar to Alexia's parasol in that book.

message 185: by Sharle (new)

Sharle (mizzkruger) | 110 comments Harry Potter rereads are always great. I think I'm going to use it for the "unusual form of travel" task. Thanks for the idea.

What form of unusual travel are you guys thinking of?

Earlier we already ruled out brooms. Since they are so common in the fictional world it is amazing we haven't figured out yet how to do it in real life.

We also ruled out instantaneous transportation from one spot to another since travel means a noticable amount of time has passed to reach a destination. So that also means the Floo Powder Network is out, since you're instantaneously transported from one fireplace to the next. I can't really remember if apparation or portkeys are instantaneous or take some time. Maybe Lu can tell us since she is our resident HP expert.

The Thestrals are in. I am not sure about the Durmstrang boat and the Beauxbatton's carriage. They would count in principal, but aren't used by the main characters.

The Weasley's car is in of course and so is the Knight Bus.

I can't think of another form of travel used in the HP books that may be considered unusual. Maybe you can. Let me know which book and which form of travel you were thinking of if I have let it out.

I was thinking of the flying car Harry and Ron use to get to Hogwarts.

message 189: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
That one's in. So no problem. Happy rereading!

message 190: by Sharle (new)

Sharle (mizzkruger) | 110 comments I'm pretty sure the portkeys and apparition are instantaneous. I was going to use either the flying car or Buckbeak, depending on which book I want to read.

message 191: by Barbara (new)
