I went to look at that and that guy only has 3 books on his list! Also it was weird because when I went onto the list I was actually No. 5 not 6! Haha that means I can read a book off my own to-read list :)
@ Lauren (Sugar & Snark): You are #9 and I am #10 on

Read may be better. I don't know how anybody avoids a TBR list of epic proportions, but obviously more people than we think!

I agree it is strange but there does seem to be a lot of them out there, let's do read.

The previous task going by the list of tasks? What if I don't want to read the previous task? :P
Can it be the previous book I read for the challenge? Pretty please.

Hi this function seems to have a problem. I have gone to 5 or 6 of these groups now and looked all over, bookshelves etc. And although most have books I have on them that I have read. None have any that are on my to-read list!
Am I doing something wrong?

I second this one please. I never read them in the order by number.

No you're not. It took me almost 2 hours to find a group that had one of my to read books on their shelves. Most have my read books. Only this group doesn't have a book of the month. So I wouldn't be able to fulfill the part of the task where I have to say which month they read the book.
I think this task needs looking at.

Normally the ones on the first page are all reading something from my To Be Read list, so I didn't realise it's possible for the group to be listed, but not actually reading a book.
I'm happy to drop the book of the month part from the task. Any other ideas (other than checking which group is reading a book you want to read and adding it to your To Be read list!)

I also found that a lot of the groups wouldn't let me search their shelve unless I was a member. This task is impossible!

Since you asked so nicely (& I bow easily to pressure), agreed :)

In my search I found the Highlander Romance group. They have books by Janet Chapman on their shelf. I recommended her books to you and I know you have added some to your to read shelf. Maybe this group has something you could use (or add at the last moment) :)

I think if you just dropped to month part it will be a lot easier.
Also the way people look for the book might be easier if the searched for groups about genres or authors they like and already have on their to read shelf. I ended up doing that and then I found groups much easier that have books I want to read on their shelves.
So maybe the task should be: find a group about a genre you like that has a book on their bookshelf that you have on your to read shelf and read it.

Thanks Barbara. I really didn't mean for anybody to have to dig through the most obscure groups.
So the amended task will be: Find a group about a genre you like that has a book on their bookshelf that you have on your to read shelf and read it. Tell us which group you used.

It's not your fault. :) It is the definition that Goodreads gives to that section of the page and then names it something different.
The section's name suggests that it is about books you have on your to read shelf, but when you look at the books it is about books that you have on your shelves including read and wishlist etc. Depending how your shelves look that can be a problem. I for one don't like to have lots of books on my to read shelf (I hate profiles that have 2000 books or more as a total and only have read 50 books and the rest is on their to read shelf). But that makes it harder for me to find a group that has a book from my to read shelf. That is why I played around with how to find a book that met the criteria.
The idea behind your task is good. It's just Goodreads that makes a mess of it.

I went to test an alternative task in case and that one ended not too well either, so obviously not a great day for tasks!
Let me not cause any more chaos, so I'll go and read a book. I have 30 pages to go and then I can finish the Pratchett challenge - eventually!

I think you hit the nail on the head there. I also have a comparatively very small to-read list. I think that’s why we've had similar problems. And I agree it's been a blue Monday all round on goodreads! Best just to go read a book and come back fresh tomorrow.

Gees, I go offline for one day and everything goes to pot.
Kidding aside, updating this task list has already been quite a schlep, with changes being made all the time. For the sake of clarity, and in the hope of easing the headache that yesterday's discussion just gave me, can everyone who has edited their task please either post the edited version for me, or just tell me what to edit?
I'm glad you guys are searching for books and testing the tasks though, so we can sort this all out before November 1!

Select the previous book you read for the challenge. Click on the Genre (right hand side) with the least number of users. Scroll down to the Popular genre books section and select a book from this list.
Amended version:
Go to Groups at the top of the page. Find a group about a genre you like that has a book on their bookshelf that you have on your to read shelf and read it. Tell us which group you used.

Amended Version:
Go to You Profile. Just under your picture you will see stats like mine:
#25 best reviewers
#47 top users
#11 most followed
#14 top reviewers
#34 top librarians
(PS Lauren F and I know that these haven't been updated in a long time, but anyway)
Then you choose the one that you are the closest to being first.
You then choose the person that is 1 number lower that you (so I choose #10 most followed). Then you read 1 book that is on their To-Read List or Read List.

Just for your peace of mind. I have been searching for books for this challenge and I have been able to find books for all the tasks that we have so far. So every one of them can be done. Whether people are happy with the books they find or not, is a whole different question, but books can be found. :)

Guys, we may have a problem with this challenge.
I could be the only on who has this problem in our group, but I know there are quite a few people on Goodreads who have this problem so it would figure that some of you experience this too.
As you may have noticed Goodreads has added a new green button called want to read to replace the add to my books button. Besides trouble with addding books to your shelves (which is an entirely different problem) it makes loading pages insufferable and in some cases impossible.
Loading the home page with updates from my friends takes about 3-4 minutes, but is still possible. The problem for me comes primarily with Listopia. I can still open the home page of Listopia but a list is no longer possible. I have tried several lists of varying lengths and I tried IE and Firefox. I even let my computer alone to do something else and came back 1 hour later to see if it was just a time issue. However the page locks, won't load and I have to shut it down with task manager.
I have heard that there are also problems with loading certain author pages.
Goodreads is looking into this bug, but they can't say if or when it will be fixed.
I hope I am the only one with this problem, but I don't know. At the very least it will mean I need your help accessing lists for the last couple of tasks. If I am not the only one, we may need some other solution.

That is very strange Barbara! And it sucks :(
No problems here yet.
Anyone else?
Also if it is just you Barbara we can help you out and look at listopia's for you while it gets fixed :)

I've just checked and I'm having no problems opening lists or loading any pages. Anybody else having a problem?

I hope they fix it because it does sucks. Fortunately I already found books for the tasks already nominated before this new button was put on the site. So it would be a problem for the last couple of tasks.
I was hoping indeed that it is just me and that we could work something out for the last tasks if I need to access lists. Thanks for the offer!

LOL. You should see the comments in the Goodreads Feedback group. Some are trashing Goodreads because the don't think it is an improvement and are wondering why Goodreads is changing things without asking us if we want them changed. It is really funny!
The thing that I hate is that you no longer have a choice to mark a book directly as "Read" or "Currently Reading". You have to put them on the TBR list and then have to go and find them again etc.

Liezel wrote: "Actually if you click on the 'little books' next to "want to read", you can select the shelf you want to add the book to"
You're my hero! It's been driving me insane.

Yes it does take forever to load and I think it might be using up my data at an alarming rate but I think it is very user friendly. You can now put books directly into any of your shelves not just the main 3.
#next: Go to Goodreads Voice (under the Explore menu). Scroll down to Movers and Shakers. Read any book that appears on this list during the challenge. State which month it was on the list.
Go to Explore at the top of the screen. Scroll down until you get to "Recent Award Winners" on the right hand side and select. On the left is a list of book awards. Read a book that has won one of the awards listed. To complete the task, list the award, the category (if applicable), and the year that the book won the award.
Note: the award lists are not perfect, so you may find a book that won the award, but is not listed. To use the book, the award itself must be listed. You must provide proof the book won the award. It will either be listed on the book's profile on Goodreads or give a link to a complete list. Example the Pulitzer Prize is listed, but the 1952 non-fiction winner is not on the list. However, it is on the book page and the official list and Wikipedia, so you can read the book.

Go to Recommendations. On the bottom right hand side click on Ask for Recommendations. Describe what kind of book you would like to read then choose one of the books suggested.

Note: Even if people are reading multiple books are once, you're restricted to whatever shows up on this list. You must choose and read a book AFTER it appears here. So if you read a book now, and it appears on the list later, it no longer counts.
