Lauren and I also seemed to have ended up pretty much with the same task - just different ways of getting there. 9 and 10 are very similar. Do you want me to change mine as well?

message 52: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh, I didn't notice that. They both use the same feature, but have different paths to it, so I'm not sure.

To all participants - do you guys think we should change one?

If we do make a change though, then I think Lauren F should make the change, as your nomination came first Carolien.

Guys, please take note of earlier nominations so we don't have repetitions.

Maybe you missed it Lu, but I asked you a question in message 37. Could you please look at it?

About task 9 and 10. They may be similar but since most people have totally different favorite genres I think you can end up with totally different books. So I am fine with it.

Oh about this: "The list contains a couple of winners and a lot of nominees. Can we pick from both? Also I saw that amongst the winners were some graphic novels and books that don't comply with our normal rules (one had only 32 pages). Can we pick any of them or do the normal rules still apply? "

Soz missed it! Winners and nominees is fine. Nope normal rules still apply :)

I think they are fine. It is a different way to get there. I don't think there are enough features to make each one unique.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
That's ok! I thought so, that's why I asked you again.

Thanks for your answer. That is another book I can start looking for! :)

My new one:

Because there aren't enough books to choose from I am combining 2 sections (if that is ok?)

Go to Explore at the top, Click Goodreads Voice.
Then click either the option Goodreads Live (Here read a book by one of the author's listed) or Debut Author Snapshot (Here read one of the books the next to the author's picture).

Hi they do use the same feature, but mine is using a friends favorite book to get a similar book. They use the same feature but they are not really the same, but I am happy to change mine.

message 59: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Since there doesn't seem to be any real drive for a change, then we can leave it as is :)

Lu, I'm fine with using two features if each only offers a few choices.

Great. We're going to have to get very creative for these tasks!

message 62: by Claudia (last edited Oct 08, 2012 09:20AM) (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Read a book from The South African Booklovers' bookshelf. (While browsing anywhere in our group, click on "Bookshelf" in the upper right-hand corner.)
Or use this link : http://www.goodreads.com/group/booksh...

I'm not sure if this task quite fits. What do you guys think?

message 63: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I think it's fine. Group bookshelves are a feature after all.

message 64: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Absolutely allowed.

Go to the bottom of the page and click on the About Us tag. Scroll down to the Who Are We section and click on the photo of one of the two founders or Goodreads: Otis Chandler of Elizabeth Kuri Chandler. Read any book one of these two rated 5 stars.

Go to Explore at the top of the page and click on the down arrow next to it. Click on Ebooks. Choose a book on this list and read it. If you have a hard copy of the book you are welcome to read that instead of the ebook version.

Lauren can you change "posted during the challenge" into "posted in 2012 or 2013" in my first task which is number 3?

Lu's comment about few choices made me think and I just want to increase people's choices. If we don't change it they may not have many.

message 69: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Ok, will do it when I get home (on my Blackberry at the moment).

message 70: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
No rush. Thanks!

message 71: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jevine) | 939 comments Click on Explore and select Listopia. On the right is a list of tags. Select the page number of tags which is the same as the challenge number (i.e. if the challenge task number is 15, then go to page 15 of tags). Select the Tag number which matches the task number (this will give you a choice of 2 tags, depending on which way you count). Choose a book from the first list on the page

message 72: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I couldn't resist going immediately to check what books I could choose from, so if you want a quick link to the lists for Jennifer's task (task 16), here they are:

YA Debuts 2011 http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/88...
Best REAL Psychological Fiction http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/83...

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Well that is quite divers :-)

message 74: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, I was very worried at first! We could have gotten 'Most Perverse Fiction' or 'Best Books about Geology'. The lists might also change later.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Does that mean we can't start planning now? I was wondering the same thing with a couple of the other tasks, because as you just said some things on goodreads change, author recommendation etc. Does that mean we can only choose the book we are going to read the day we read it. Because that would make getting the book impossible!

message 76: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I was thinking we could just put down the date on which we found and chose the list and book, and anything from now until the end of the challenge counts. Unless you have more specific instructions Jennifer? If you want to curb the loophole hunters, now is the time to do it :)

message 77: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Loopholes! My favourite. :)

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Yay for Loopholes!
Hunting in all forms is inhumane!

message 79: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Unless you're hunting for loopholes...

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
The lists already changed, because I just looked to see where it would lead and I got Most exciting upcoming ya and ya debuts 2011.
So some restriction would be a good thing. If there isn't some sort of restriction you could wait till you get a list with a book you have been waiting to read.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Then we should all choose quickly before we do end up reading books about geology!

message 83: by Varla Fiona (new)

Varla Fiona (dory_42) | 1332 comments Mod
Maybe whoever nominated the task should also choose a day and time and whatever lists come up at that time are the lists we must use.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) wrote: "Then we should all choose quickly before we do end up reading books about geology!"

I would prefer that to YA I have to admit! I suggest we just date our selections. The nice/difficult thing of this challenge is it does have much more of a random nature to it than a lot of the other challenges, because most of them could actually change at any given moment.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Have worked out most of my list this afternoon, obviously it might change but I am going off today’s date so far and I will reassess later if needed.

Just a quick question. Do all of the books (unless otherwise stated) on these lists count? No matter if they are nonfiction, less than 150 pages, graphic novels etc.

An example. One of the founders of goodreads rated a Naked Chef Cook Book 5 Stars. I own this book and would like to read it. I assume this counts?

message 86: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Most non-fiction can probably be read cover to cover as you would a novel, but for exceptions like cookbooks, I'd say it counts if you're going to read it cover to cover (index and appendices optional, as long as you don't include them in the page count), the text covers most of the page (assuming the font is a reasonable size), and the number of pages with text amounts to 150 or more.

Books less than 150 pages don't count.

I don't know what the rules are regarding graphic novels. In my opinion, they don't contain enough text to count, even if they are over 150 pages long. However, I recall that Watchmen was once allowed.

message 87: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Jennifer, could you make a decision regarding the debate about your task?

message 88: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
As long as the task states book any book is allowed. If they don't want you to read a non-fiction book they should say novel. It is a loophole I have used before and intend to use again if people keep saying book. Of course the ordinary rules apply and it should contain at least 150 pages pure text. So if the Naked Chef Cook book has more than a 150 pages pure text so minus the pictures and open spaces in recipes I personally have no objections to using it.

message 89: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jevine) | 939 comments I will have another look and provide some guideline changes by tomorrow.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Hmm I know that it is not just a cook book but has anecdotal stories as well. But now I am thinking that it is more effort figuring out how much is text etc. then just finding another book.

@Lu- For Task No. 2 does it have to have won the award or can it be a nominee?

message 91: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Already asked that question and it can be a nominee.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod

message 95: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I just want to clarify something about task 4. You go to Listopia's main page, scroll down to "Lists my friends have voted on" and select "a featured list". Does this mean we can only choose from the 6 lists shown there? Are we not allowed to go to "more"?

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
I have a new nomination, I'm so excited about it! When does the next round open?

message 97: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith On Monday.

message 98: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jevine) | 939 comments Ok, some changes to the task requirement for #16 -
Click on Explore and select Listopia. On the right is a list of tags. Select the page number of tags which is the same as the challenge number (i.e. if the challenge task number is 16, then go to page 16 of tags). Select the Tag number which matches the task number (this will give you a choice of 2 tags, depending on which way you count). Then select a book off one of the Lists under the chosen tag. To complete the task you have to indicate the date you selected your book, the tag that you used, the list that you selected and the name of the book that you read”.

This hopefully clears up some of the loopholes mentioned earlier and make it clearer for those doing the task.

That is my task. You're not limited to the 6 lists, you can select "more lists your friends have voted on" and use any of the lists in that section.
