I propose that everyone team up with one of the other group members that will be doing the challenge. A “challenge buddy” so to speak.

Some people, like myself, do not post their stories online due to copyright issues and “first right publication” concerns.

So, I propose that we team-up with someone else who is taking the challenge, so that at the end of the challenge we can share stories to verify word counts.

It is just a thought :]

Paul Not a bad idea at all! Do you want to buddy me? I have no problem with posting stuff up, because my initial route to market is Lulu and print on demand, until I have built up my fan-base, but I appreciate your concerns.

Plus, that way, I get a sneak preview of the next work :-)

Sure Paul, it would be an honor to be your "challenge team buddy." Plus, I know I will have to write like a maniac to keep up with your prolific writing.

message 54: by Paul (last edited Feb 15, 2009 04:54AM) (new)

Paul Thanks Dee!

Incidentally, I have a technique for avoiding writer's block - those moments when you're tired, you've had a very trying day, and the last thing you want to do is start wrestling with disobedient characters.

Simply, stop one and a half sentences before the end of your writing session - you know what the one and a half sentences will be, you just don't write them. So you finish with an incomplete sentence - just one clause perhaps.

Then, when you start your next writing session, just resume where you left off. Write the other clause to finish the incomplete sentence, then write the next sentence (that was still held in your head).

By now, you are in full flow and on you charge!

Hmmm... I think that I'm going to shoot for 25k... Actually, I think that I might take advantage of the month and finish Invisible Peace. I only have chapter one and a little bit of chapter 2.

But if I reach 25k more than a week before the end of march, I'll make the goal 30k, or 35k, or 40k, respectively.

Hey Roni, outstanding commitment.

OK, I am going to go for 40k total words for the challenge. I really need to jumpstart the second book of my SOA series (I have been spending most of my writing time on another book, Arizona Knight).

Hey Paul, great idea...I personally never have writer's block, but I do have "editing anxiety." I can spend a full day on one paragraph. It is very annoying phobia. LOL

message 57: by Paul (new)

Paul I'll do 50K words plus my normal 2,000 per day - 110,000 words all told in that month.

What the heck, I can sleep in April...oh, no, that's Script Frenzy month...OK, I can sleep in May.

Geez Paul, you are a lean mean writing machine.

message 59: by Paul (last edited Feb 15, 2009 05:50AM) (new)

Paul Hehehe!

Take a closer look at my picture - don't think the word lean really applies to me. Perhaps thirty years ago...

message 60: by Veronica, Bigfoot makes an excellent character (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 727 comments Mod
Well, it's the writing machine part that matters!

message 61: by Paige (last edited Feb 15, 2009 10:38AM) (new)

Paige Miller | 4362 comments Yeah, who cares about the lean part? They just throw that in to make it rhyme. I think the buddy system is a great idea. Now to find a buddy...

I think I'm going to go for... 25k, half of NanoWrimo. Then, if I achieve that, I'll go for 30, 35, etc.

message 62: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (caladhiel) | 1020 comments I think I'm going to go for 20k or 25k. I haven't quite decided yet.

About the buddy system: I'm one who doesn't post all of my writing up here (I only have some excerpts and some poetry), but I guess that I still wouldn't be comfortable with sharing all my writing with someone I don't know personally. Do you get what I'm saying?

message 63: by Veronica, Bigfoot makes an excellent character (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 727 comments Mod
Yeah. There are things that I write that are personal, and I don't really want to share them with others.

Or sometimes things that express who I REALLY am and what I really fell--I don't usually like sharing those with people either, particularly people that I'm not really close to.

There are some things you write for you, and some things you write for others.

I'm thinking of doing a 20 or 25k goal. I'm not sure yet. March is usually a pretty busy month. All my months are. But I'm hoping to finish/almost finish Reawakened Soul by then ... hmm ... well, I'll think about it.

message 66: by Paige (new)

Paige Miller | 4362 comments Kenzie, do you want to be my buddy?

message 67: by Kenzie, Help feed the hungry. Donate to 30 Hour Famine! (new)

Kenzie | 1305 comments Mod
Sure, Tink. I'd be honored. :)

I'll just have to mark the place I start my Write-A-Thon at so I know how much I've written.

Just Plain Ray (Ray_of_Sunshine) | 2557 comments *sigh* I have no idea which story, or what my goal will be -.-

message 70: by Paul (new)

Paul Ray, get the ideas and plot sorted out first, then just write it.

The first version will be awful - but don't worry; everyone's first version always is :]

It's when you come to edit it that you get to really shine!

message 71: by Just Plain Ray (new)

Just Plain Ray (Ray_of_Sunshine) | 2557 comments Thanks Paul, but thats not the problem..

message 77: by Just Plain Ray (new)

I only have 3k so far *sigh*

message 78: by Paige (new)

Paige Miller | 4362 comments Come on Ray Ray! And you can do better than 10k... you have an entire MONTH!

message 79: by Paul (new)

Paul Ray,

I know what that's like - you have so many ideas fizzing around, and you need to work on one.

Well, you need to choose one and finish it. It doesn't matter that you chose the wrong one, and that you get bored with it, and you struggle...

It also doesn't matter that you get this really, really great idea while you're half way through the boring one - write down your great idea and carry on with the boring one till you've finished it.

Then look at all your stored ideas again - and choose the next one.

And so it goes...

Honestly, that is how most writers find life. The secret is to keep going till you've finished - because writing is a craft, a job, like anything else, and you have to finish what you've started - 'cos otherwise you're just cheating yourself.

I sound like a wise old git, don't I :]
