Well, I suppose you could place bent tubers for the roots to grow through, removing the tubes after the roots have become harder. This way, you could direct the growth of the roots to make a new kitchen from yams.

Cabbage reminds me of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Which is kind of ironic, but remember how Charlie's family ate nothing but cabbage soup in the beginning?
