message 1078: by Robert (new)

Robert Gross | 305 comments If you don't mind living in a rat infested tent for 11 months, and artillery firing all of the time, it was exciting place. I remember Saigon as a filthy, dirty miserable place, Of course I was always stinking drunk when I was in Saigon. I don't drink now, like I did in Vietnam, but usually the only reason I had to go to Saigon was to get drunk. I always thought it was amusing to hear the local show girls singing American songs. The only way to get to Saigon from where I was stationed ( Cu Chi)on the Cambodian border was by convey or helicopter. Either transportation method would scare you to death. Thanks for asking.

message 1079: by Robert (new)

Robert Gross | 305 comments I carried blunder bust for several months (just kidding), actually I was given an M14 .308 cal, and later, when I was transferred to another base along the Cambodian border, I was issued an M69 grenade launcher.I really liked it. I was assigned to the 25 infantry Division . I was part of the 53rd signal battalion, assigned to the 25th Infantry Div.. Our outfit was a loan company of radio operators. As a radio code /teletype operator, I got to go on special missions when called upon to do so. I had a Secret Crypto clearance ,and did mostly radio support for Battalion Commander. The food wasn't to bad as long as you didn't mind a few bugs for desert. Our bread always had bugs in it. As a matter of fact some of us used to make bets as to how many bugs we got in our bread slices. We were fed well. Served a lot of chicken pork, steak, and liver.
Sorry about the Blunder bust comment. Just having a little fun. The M14 rifle is a little outdated, but still in use. The M16 was just making it's debut when I got to Nam in June of 66. it wasn't very popular when first issued. It jammed a lot. Some of the Infantry guys told me In combat they would discard their M16, an grab an AK47 or SKS rifle from one of the dead enemy. (Gooks) I don't use that term anymore out of respect for their dead worriers. They were good soldiers, and don't deserve to be called Gooks.
I hope I answered your question, and didn't bore you.
Thank you for asking your questions.

message 1080: by Robert (new)

Robert Gross | 305 comments Yes, there were rocket propelled grenades back them. i was nearly killed by one in JUNE OF 66, We were just beginning to set up our radio shack bunker when the Vietcong launched an attack. It had been raining cats ans dogs for several days and there water puddles everywhere, My rifle was back in our tent about 500 feet away. Very dumb of me. THE Cong began walking morters my direction.I decided to run back to our tent and get my M-14. I tripped and fell in the mud just as a Charily fired a RPG in my direction. It hit a mud puddle just in front of me , splashed mud in my face , glanced off the mud puddle, and lodged itself in our beer cooler several hundred feet away.
Had the denator not been damaged when it hit the mud puddle, I wouldn't be here today. It wasn't my time.
OK,I have bored you long enough. IT's lunch time.

To answer your question, yes there were rocket propelled grenades back then, but the only one I saw was the one fired at me. I didn't care to see any more..I can't attach photos here, otherwise I would show you some of the Vietnam weaponary.

Interesting. My other laptop just froze up as I was about tp mention our crypto equipment. Bottom line is I CAN'T talk about.it except our codes could not be broken, I was also lucky in that I never had to do jungle fighting. I worked in a radio shack that normally set in the back of a 3/5 ton truck.
Sorry, but Ican/t discuss my crypto equipmemt any further . I can say my radio shack sitting on the back ofthe truck was an apealing target of the vietcong morter crews .I quickly learned that the cong loved to eleminate the rabio equipment first thing during an attack. Of couurse, I had other ideas about that!

Robert Gross | 305 comments Not sure what you mean by #2, but I think I need to go do it,,

message 1088: by Robert (new)

Robert Gross | 305 comments I can answer question about the M-14 recoil. It kicks much more than a AR16, but still not bad shooting. the M-14 is more accurate than the AR14. That pertains to the rifling in the M-14 as compared to the AR16 The AR16 wasn't designed for long range shooting, but rather close quarters jungle fighting. .308 is a mil spec round just as the .223. the .308 is a 7.62x51 and is the round they shoot out of an m60 machine gun,. ammo is cheep and pleantyfull (not that the .223 is not) and the effective range is a about 300yards further. The M14 will shoot dirty, the AR will not.
Sorry, I haven't checked my spelling. I find it a nusence to do so, as long as I get my message across.
Take care, Sgt E-5 Gross

message 1089: by Robert (new)

Robert Gross | 305 comments Sorry, I meant to say the M-14 in more accurate than the AR16. That has to do with barrel length and rifling twist per inch. The M-14 is about 3 pounds heavier than the AR16.

Robert Gross | 305 comments In case you haven't figured it out by now, I love talking about my tour of duty in Nam. I was one of the few idiots who volunteered to go.I volunteered Airborne Special Forces, and was assigned to a group of about 50 other volunteers. We trained together as one unit. I was upset at the time, but I failed to make the Airborne physical requirements due to a bad ankle. I had damaged as a child. In looking back, it was a good thing I didn't make it through Airborne training because most the guys I enlisted with were killed during the first few months in Nam I was one of two survivors in our group. I think Big Guy up stairs was looking out after me.
