This post cracked me up. I (almost) couldn't agree with it more. But on the other hand I'm ruthlessly addicted to this genre. Why is that?? I read every single one of the Evermore books thinking that each sequel was worst than the last. Yet I kept on buying them on the Nook and paying crack head prices for the equivalent of a bag of flour.

However, with Tiger's Curse, the brothers are actually pretty different. But yeah, everything else is correct, and believe me, I have read many, MANY YA books.However, there is one book that is the exception in some way. Defiance, by C.J. Redwine. So far (only 60% through) neither the MC or the MC love interest have superpowers, they are just trained from a young age to fight and have smarts. And they are both Stunningly Beautiful.
Yeah, I hated the love triangle. I have yet to completely finish the 2nd book because of that, and I have the 3rd ready for me to read when I can get over it
You too. Also, you should look into analyzing other genres; my friend read this too, and thought this was the only genre that did this.
Pretty much all stories fall into 7 plots, (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php...) so no matter what you read if you simplify it down enough it will sound just like a ton of other books on the market. Which is why what's in the book and the characters that are involved in the story are what bring it to life. Yes they may be similar but if you are going to read a bunch of books in the same sub-genre (eg young adult paranormal romance) then that's only to be expected. The problem isn't so much that the stories are all "the same" but that because they are popular at the moment and sell well, publishers are willing to publish lesser quality manuscripts and it brings the quality of the whole genre down.
Yes, that is kind of what I told my friend. I just said that there are always different variations of the basic plot like it is outlined by Alexis, including characters and writing styles. I feel like sometimes the writing style determines whether the book is good.
That is totally true. I like Paranormal and fantasy, though Paranormal is my favorite, I have to admit. But I like to read adult Paranormal romance, too. They follow slightly different guidelines, but again is sort of the same as the YA Paranormal romance

Great. Totally agree. wish the trend would stop continuing. It's like every author use the same concept and miserably failed ventures.(love triangle) Similar stuff keep occurring is almost every ya i read. originality has lost its meaning :(

I bought the 4 books, read it and so I'm so disappointed with how it ends. I thought I was only over-reacting when I thought Fallen and Torment are boring because I read Fifty Shades trilogy prior to reading Fallen. Well, lesson learned then, maybe I should be reading more reviews before purchasing one.
My friend and I jokingly made an entire plot to the next best book they will come out with in this genre about 2 years ago. Wouldn't you know it, I read a book so similar to what we came up with that I had to question where they got their ideas. You did the same thing my friend and I did. We picked out everything that tends to be in The Book, as you call it, and we filled in the blanks with characters and some action. It really could have been published had we taken our time and took it seriously. Only, we didn't want to be in this sort of situation. I know we could come up with something original. It was meant as a joke, after all. Lol

Defiance is one of my favourite books to date. They're good looking, but no one gets stuck on it. So much more action and adventure, and better explanations for adult absence that actually fit into the plot line :)
Nice post Alexis! I am addicted to reading them. Addicted to the emotions I get....laughing, crying and cursing through my reading.

hell, yeah!!! I didn't even bother reading the second book of fallen even after downloading it (although I have read all of twilight *sad face*) BTW, You forgot to add Wings series by aprilynne pike .P.S :Unspoken is pretty good for paranormal genre, no love triangle (yet).
I have never read any book by Sarah Rees Brennan save this one, and it seemed suitably good for a series (i mean, there's gotta be loose ends, right, or what else will the second book tell?) but who knows? may be she will be swept up in this "love-triangle" fever too, although she hasn't yet. Plus there's a bonus, the girl lead is not traditionally beautiful (she is half Japanese, I think) and is quite happy with it, which made it bearable to me. I think you should give it a try.

Tithe - Holly Black follows most of this.City of Bones - Cassandra Clare follows this. The rest of the series moves away from those specific clichés (it's still cliché later but it doesn't fit with your formula lol)
Thankyou for this list, I don't intend necessarily to avoid all these books like the plague but I probably will skip most of the ones I was considering on the list. I'm sure they're not all bad but the formulaic paranormal romance is getting on my nerves lately, prefer some nice formulaic fantasy epics :P
haha omg i love this!!!! its soo true!!!!! nearly every book thats coming out is like that! theres always a love triangle and then its poor me poor me im not going to think about anything else now because i have 2 boys who love me boo hoo, people need to get a grip for once id like to read a book where the MC is actually normal in the head and does what she has to do without her every thought being about a man, its depressing and annoying, i mean women arent like that so why paint us that way in a book? its a bit demoralizing to be honest
its true though isnt it, its stupid how the mc is always following a guy around like a lost puppy i mean come on they abandon their friends suddenly their family doesnt matter any more they become like anti socail all because of a guy sometimes i just wanna slap the author
When I started reading Fallen I could not put it down i love the book can't what to read the next one.
Authors really need to write differently towards one another, yeah i love these types of books but it just gets boring after awhile

being THE BOOK doesn't always make a book bad. it has a lot to do with the ignorance of the author.

It would have been embarrassing if she listed her books as great alternatives but she didn't.
Just because your a writer doesn't mean you have to like everything out there that is written.
That is the most awesome post I've ever read. Unfortunately, I love 50% of the books on there. But that won't stop me from admitting it's true.No one writes anything original these days anyway.

And Alexis is an author, so she understands better how a story should have been written, right? You don't learn the ins and outs of a job unless you are doing it.
Plus no matter what you say, you can't dispute the fact that every book she has listed, contains the same plot told in a different way (sometimes not even that). And that is all we have pointed out here. Never have any of us said that do not read the books. If you like it, go ahead. See the post of Reinmarie. she has said that she loves The Fallen series. and the next comment is of Alexis where she had said that liking is good. you want to see how people trash books? seek out threads about Fifty shades of grey and Twilight. They'll give you a crash course in trashing.
And, this is my personal opinion, please read the whole thread carefully and without bias before you post any comment. saves time, goodreads' space and people from hurting.
yes, no one bothers to take risks anymore. if anything is a hit, suddenly everything else starts following the same trend. After the success of twilight, suddenly every paranormal romance started following the same pattern. Alexis, I don't celebrate Christmas since I'm Muslim, but a very merry Christmas to you!

Alexis doesn't sound bitter and jealous, she has very pointedly shown us how a lot of successful series are quite alike. We have done school projects of classics that were a lot less flattering than that. and not once, any of us have tried to keep anybody from reading any of the books, so I just don't get the love to hate comment. But I guess no logic is going to penetrate the fandom induced haze that you brain is currently in, so I won't bother anymore.
I have been thinking about this for a while... and I finally decided that it was time that someone wrote a paranormal book, with a female main character who does NOT fall in love, at all in the book... New concept right.

I'd definitely buy that book! there can be some romantic tension, even romantic tension between three characters, but in the end, the heroin, or hero gets that the relationship isn't suitable and walks away.

I have been meaning to make a post like this for such a long time, but most of the time, I feel to lazy. :) I couldn't agree more. One could only marvel why such things sell at all. The YA genre is getting to be too disappointing. Anyway, you should add Creatura to that list. I was hoping it would be different based on some comments...but, oh well. :D
Hey, stop hating, everyone's entitled to their opinion. If Alexis is an author, then really, she has the right to criticize authors because she is one. I say you can only hate on other books if you can write your own books. So if you're not an author, who are you to judge? You can't even write a book that amazing with a decent plotline. I'm not saying Alexis hating on anybody, because seriously, the way she's writing this shows respect to everybody. And don't go around calling anybody a bitch, Fallen. A few posts doesn't mean you know somebody.And I love Lauren Kate and the Fallen series. I'm no hater.

This is actually really true. I love it! I have never really linked then together like that! Although i must say some are very good reads. Most of the books are very predictable and you always are expecting the romance twist. I would really like to read a book that the MC is part of the in crowd and what happens to them when the new girl comes in and so to speak hogs the spotlight in all the other books. just to give a new perspective or light on "the book"
