That is correct the do connect. I'd start reading the Fever first though.
Maybe try these out for some of your first PNR:

I figured I'd start with KMM's Fever series because the GR blurbs sound interesting, and not too far out there for a newbie like me. Also, this series and KMM in general, seem to appear a lot in discussion threads with tons of positive comments. However I don't want to start with the Fever series if I will be missing out on needed background from the Highlander series.
When I've considered different PN books to read, the ones with time travel and alternate identities/worlds seem to be the ones that appeal to me. Are these types of books not considered PN? If not, I'm not sure PN is for me, even though I really want to try it. I think it would take a small miracle to get me to read a vampire or werewolf book. I can't even bring myself to read Kristen Ashley's PN series, despite everyone raving about it, and she's my favorite author.

There's a number of time travel books in both PNR and UF (Urban Fantasy). Both Genre's are paranormal.
Maybe this will help it explains the genres a bit:

And here is a long list of PNR titles:

Sentinal wars
Katherine Kat
Kitty
Dark Protectors
Shifter's Unbound
Legacy series
New Species
Alexandra Jones
Heart of the Wolf
Vampires in America
And that's just naming a few lol... Plus there's the ones I've yet to start:
Anita Blake
IAD
LOTU
Dark Hunters
Cassie Palmer
Night Keepers
Rachel Morgan
World of the Night walkers
Grimm's Circle
The Edge
The League
The Pride series
Again that's only a few lol
And I ALWAYS seem to be adding to it... It's like a sickness lol

I don't think you necessarily need anything from the Highlander series to read Fever. I read Fever then I read the Highlanders and it was an interesting surprise that some people (the fae mostly) were mentioned in the Highlanders but I didn't feel I missed out and besides the fae that were in the Highlanders pissed me off. They're lucky I read them first in Fever and liked them (I adore Adam though, one of the Highlander series heroes). It took three or so books to go by before I consented and allowed some affection for the fae in the Highlander series. And I was so sure I wouldn't like them too after enduring them through so many books. The highlanders are geared towards the couple (the storyline was the thing that made me dislike them, plus some characters) and the Fever series is focused on the storyline first then the couple (the couple's relationship isn't cut off though it's there just that the storyline is a heck of a lot to handle and so it needs more stage-time).

The Highlanders are definitely more time travel/historical than PNR. I agree that Kresley Cole's IAD might be a better starting point for a newbie to PNR. My first PNR was Christina Dodd's Darkness Chosen series, which got me hooked - lots of gorgeous shapeshifter a :0)

I literally JUST finished it early last night... I LOVED it and I didn't think I would...Fell absolutely In love with Kellan. It's an amazing series and very well written. It is a roller coaster of emotions though. I laughed, cried, wanted to hit the characters a time or two but all in all VERY good series :)

Hello, fellow DH lovers, I am a newbie to these posts. I would like to start reading Kresley Cole or JR Ward but there are a lot of books in those series. Do I need to read the whole lot of them or are there some good stand alone books that you can suggest I start with?
Or is there a better similar series I should start with?
Or is there a better similar series I should start with?

go ahead and read them separately, but you'll miss a lot. They both are a series that has some stuff that lets the book be be stand alone, but so much is built on previous books and builds in future books.
I'd suggest reading 3 or 4 then taking a break then come back for 3 or 4 more. That way you don't get burnt out on the series, if that's what you're worried about.

With Ward's BDB series you definately need to read them in order. I've only read the first two of Cole's series so I don't know about that. I think with longer series w/a lot of characters it's better to read in order so you don't miss anything.

I have SO MANY big ones I still need to read. I hate not being able to read a series completely when I find one I like so I've been collecting books from a few series for some time now. There's the fabulous dollar bookstore we go to ever few months & I've been collecting from there and Goodwill's. Some that I'm working on are:

I love both series. With BDB you need to read them in order. Each book starts where the last one left off. Since IAD has so many characters and side stories in each book I suggest reading those in order also so you don't get confused.

I am a big Ebook reader, so I was thinking about the small loan I was going to need to take out to catch up on these series :) It's cool. I will just take it one book at a time. Thanks for the info ladies!

I know what you mean. There are so many series I want to read, but it would cost a fortune to buy them all.

Abby, I have read almost all of the In Death series and yes there is romance but honestly it isn't the focus of the books. Eve and Roarke are a great couple and the books would be missing something IMO if they were part of the series but the focus is the mystery or murder that Eve and her crew are trying to solve. She changes a lot from the start of the series to where they are now and she doesn't always understand a lot of the emotional stuff that happens around her but she is a kick ass MC. I would suggest that you don't try reading them all at once as they can be a bit repetitive but give them a chance they are really good. Enjoy!

Wow! I have to salute u for devouring the entire series. I only read up to book 6 so far.

i'm in for the romance too. i'm sure you will get yourself hook from the 1st book. but i read up to book 5 before i start to leave the series because the romance isn't the focus anymore.

The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong
Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent

Kate Daniels
Night Huntress
Blades of the Rose
Iron Seas
Stone Barrington
Sea Witch Voyages
Dragon Chalice

I have to finish the Outlander Series. I think I stopped after never finishing "The Fiery Cross". I'm in the middle of the BDB series right now. I love that series but I agree w/ many who have said that the first 3 books were the best.
I also want to read these series because references to them keep popping up in people's posts in many different forums...
Dark Hunter
Immortals After Dark
Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire novels
The Mortal Instruments
Anita Blake
I tried one book of the Vampire Academy series out of order and it didn't grab me at all. (Blood Promise) I don't know if that was because I tried to read it out of order or if the series just over-rated in general.
I also wanted to give Amanda Hocking a try because I saw her on Anderson Cooper's daytime show once and I liked her rags to riches story.

I would love to know which were your favorites Danielle. What would you recommend from my list? I am not sure what to start next since these all are on my to read shelf. Maybe I'll toss some dice and see what number comes up!

Same here. :)

Black Ops
Midnight Breed
GhostWalker
In Death
Last Chance
The Hathaways
And Black Dagger Brotherhood isn't so much a 'favourite' as a guilty pleasure. I've sort of gone off paranormal books in the past couple of years...

I feel the same way. I do not like to wait for the next book in a series, so I wait until there are a number of books published and ready to read. Other than wanting to know what is going to happen next a series, I have trouble remembering what happened in the last book if there is too much time in between books!

Thanks so much for your suggestions Sonya. They will definitely go to the top of my list. I like your "guilty pleasure" tag, I may have to borrow it for my bookshelves!

Dark Hunter
In Death
Demonica
Kate Daniels - This series took almost two books to really love but once I got through them the rest I gobbled up. I have been putting off reading the last released because then I have a long wait for the next book.
Night Huntress - This one I avoided for a long time because I had mistakenly thought I had read the first book and I was wrong. Friends here on goodreads encouraged me to read it and I LOVED IT. Cat and Bones rock, I can't wait for the next book.
A few that I didn't see but I really like
Night Prince by Jeaniene Frost
Alex Craft by Kalayna Price
Guild Hunters by Nalini Singh
Cassie Palmer by Karen Chance
Dorina Basarab by Karen Chance
Elemental Assassins by Jennifer Estep
Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones
Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs
Alpha and Omega by Patricia Briggs
Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill
Riley Jensen by Keri Arthur
Women of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong
Secret McQueen by Sierra Dean
Bad Witch by Robin Bachar
Gray Court by Dana Marie Bell
Downside Ghosts by Stacia Kane
Night Tracker by Cheyenne McCray
Kitty Norville by Carrie Vaughn
Shifters by Rachel Vincent
There is a ton more that I haven't even tried yet, but look really good, unfortunately there just isn't enough time to get to them all with that little thing like having to work and seeing friends and families. (Ha Ha)

Thank you Danielle! Yes, I would say that is a great start. I have to agree, anything by Anne Stuart, is a must read. I read her Ice series and loved it. Also loved the Kresley Cole and Shannon McKenna series. Harry Dresden Series seems to be mentioned quite often so that bad boy will be added to my list. Matthew Reilly looks interesting as well. Kinsale, Thomas, Shannon K.Butcher and Beverley are new authors for me so thank you for mentioning them.
This is such a wonderful forum. I love it and truly enjoy reading the posts by the commenters on this forum. I am sending a special thanks to all who developed and moderate the DHASG. Your efforts are much appreciated.

So many good choices! I've personally really enjoyed and have continued reading all new books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Psy-Changelings, The Hathaways, Kate Daniels and Iron Seas.
Without everyone's participating, this group wouldn't be the success that it is. We really appreciate each and every member.
I would also add Anna Campbell to my list. I think she writes the historical romance that packs a punch that I enjoy. And Courtney Milan (what I've read of her meets what this discerning HR fan desires very well).

Thanks Chocolatesoup for your input. I will move all of those books up on the list. Now I just need to settle down and make a decision to start reading!

GhostWalkers-Christina Feehan
Dark Hunter/League-Kenyon
Druid Glen-Donna Grant
Nightwalkers-Jessica Anderson
The Bellum Sister-T.A. Grey
I have crazy love for the GhostWalkers. Definitely going in my desert island for ten years pile!

Fever
The League
Nightwalkers
Black Dagger Brotherhood
In Death
Fairy Tales - Eloisa James
Vampires in America
Guardians of Ascension
Eternal Guardians
Love At Stake
The Science of Temptation
And a lot of other books that got lost in my cabinets and computer... I need Naruto. Kagebunshin...

I never started to read Dark Hunter series by Sherilynn Kenyon. When I jumped on PNR/UF boat I heard so many good things about Acheron, but sheer number of books before this one needed firmer resolve from my part... Also it didn't help that first book starts with "witty" dialogue between heroine and her friend I can't get past... :(
I need to catch up with:
Elemental Assassin by Jennifer Estep (I stopped after book #5, but kept buying them)
Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost - I need to catch up with this ASAP since final book in series is coming out soon. And also, Bones. :)
I gave up on most of PNR series (and became devoted fan of bunch of new UF series), but ones that still keep my interest are:
Nalini Singh- both series
Demonica/Lords of Deliverance by Larissa Ione

Start BDB ASAP!

I need to get past book one in the Psy-changeling series... Everyone I talk to loves the series but for some reason I can't get myself to even start the second book. And I liked the first one.
I wanna start the Dark Hunters series too. But am still unsure about it.
I am excited and just downloaded the first book in the Midnight Breed series.
And I am thinking about trying to throw some non-PNR in there too but am not sure where to start... I was thinking Lora Leigh, I've heard fun things about her. But should I do Elite Ops or Tempting SEALS?
Thoughts on L.L. Series?

lol I am one of those people who did not like the highlander books. Karen Marie Moning is my favorite author but I dislike her Highlander series and regret buying the first three or four books.
@IMHO If you end up not liking what you read, I hope you try other paranormals before you give up on the genre since it is a very entertaining and intriguing genre.
