message 101: by Grampy (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) Hey, everybody! I don't know if anybody is still getting notifications for this thread, more than 2 years after the previous post, but here goes.

I just now found this thread, and I have a question. I deregistered my KK quite a while ago, after I dropped it and decided to buy a new Touch. It still worked after I dropped it, but it had a new gray bar across the top 1/2 inch of the screen, which became rather annoying in a short time, thus the new Touch.

I still have it, and it hasn't been charged in years, but it is now plugged in, charging, so I can see if I ever got upgraded. I'm curious to know whether the update might fix the gray bar that appeared at the top of the screen when I dropped it.

HERE'S MY QUESTION: can I re-register it and then get the update? If nobody answers before the thing is fully charged, I'll go ahead and try it, and may post the answer here just in case anybody else every has that question.

I currently am on my second Fire HDX, after going through 4 Touches (long story, and boring). But I always liked the KK and would love to be able to use it again as a spare, if nothing else.

Thanks, everybody!

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Hi Grampy, I hope you can get it fixed and are able to use it again. I've had mine since they came out, must be about 4 years now. It still works but is a bit slow and keeps re-loading. I think that's down to the thousands of books on it, and I'm not exaggerating there.
I've just replaced it with a Voyage but I'm gradually going to take the books off the KK and see if that speeds it up. I'll be really sad if it dies as I've had it so long and I can still read it perfectly well in good light.
Sorry I don't know if you can re-register it, I hope you can.

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) Thanks for the reply. Turns out I could re-register it, no problem, so that's what I did. But I still can't seem to get it to update. I may end up going the USB Cable route.

One thing that may shut me down is the serial number. On the Update page Amazon shows three options, depending on what the first four digits are of your serial number. Mine was WAY before the oldest number listed! In spite of that, it's also categorized as "Second Generation"! So there may be a bunch of them out there even older than mine, that the upgrade won't work on.

Got mine at Christmas, 2009. I now use the Fire HDX, and I'll never be without one again, but the good old KK would make a great spare unit.

message 104: by Grampy (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) Well, I've tried all the suggestions, but I think mine is just too old. The serial number starts with B003, and it's sporting software version 2.5.8.

The upgrade guide on Amazon tells me what to do, depending on the serial number's first 4 digits. However the lowest they go is B008, which is quite a bit later than mine.

They also tell you what to do to upgrade if your operating system is older than 3.1, so I did those things, but at no point did I see an option to "Update Your Kindle" on my Settings menu.

Oh, well, I gave it the old college try.

Thanks for the help, Vanessa, and all the good folks who posted here a couple years ago.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments You could try giving their customer service a call. They're very good and might offer a solution.

I very rarely read on a tablet as I find it makes my eyes ache after a while. But it's great for books with illustrations though.

message 106: by Grampy (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) Dealing with their customer service is sometimes worse than the original problem!

I now use a Kindle Fire HDX, which is backlit, and the back-lighting is user adjustable so your eyes aren't straining as you read. Plus it's in full color and stunningly high definition, so images are exceptional.

On the KK I finally took the 'nuclear' option, and clicked on "Restore Factory Settings". That completely wiped out my personal info and all my books. It became as barren as the day I got it. Then I re-registered it again (re-re-registered?). I hoped maybe I could upgrade it if it didn't have all the clutter taking up memory, but no such luck.

That's okay. I only became interested because I found this thread and thought it would be nice to fix the old KK for a spare. I tried, it didn't work. Life goes on!

Thanks!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Try doing the online chat option with CS. Worked really well for me.

message 108: by Grampy (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) I agree. The Chat option is best, in my opinion.

I've had really good experiences going that route, but I've also had some very frustrating ones. Sometimes I honestly think the person on the other end either: 1) takes a potty break; 2) goes out for lunch; or 3) is doing the same thing with 10 other people on 10 other computers. I'll type a simple 'yes or no' question, and it's many minutes before I get a 'no' reply. But of all the options, that is certainly the easiest, quickest and usually most satisfactory.

What works best of all, is to not have any problems that require the attention of the CS people! If I could just figure out how to make that happen....

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments As my KK was so clogged up with thousands of books I decided to do a "Restore to Factory Settings".

Well that's cleared everything off it apart from the manual and dictionaries. Now it's asking me to register it although it's showing as registered already on the laptop, on the devices section of Amazon. Won't connect to my wi-fi either so I can't register it. There's no problem with my wi-fi as I have a few other things connected to it ok, including the Voyage...grrrrr.

I've been on the phone to Amazon for over 40 minutes and we've tried everything we can think of, but still no joy. They're going to call me back in an hour or two to see if they can offer a solution. Got to say they've been really patient considering my poor old KK is over 4 years old now. They don't really have to do anything to help me. Fingers crossed it can be fixed. ** sniff, sniff**

By the way Grampy my serial number starts B00A.

message 110: by Grampy (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) Mine said it was still registered, too, after I nuked it, but a little later it changed to unregistered. But I can't remember what I clicked to make that happen! If I think of it, I'll let you know.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Ooh thanks Grampy. I'm still waiting for customer service to ring me back.

Although when I try to register it says it can't connect to wi-fi I know the wi-fi is working on it 'cos the experimental browser is working??? Yet it won't go to shop from the drop down menu but I can get to it on experimental browser...I'm confused!

I've de-registered it from my laptop and I still can't re-register it...I think I'm up the creek without a paddle at the moment :0(

message 112: by Grampy (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) You aren't the only confused one! That doesn't make sense, but then the whole concept of 'wi-fi' doesn't make sense, either, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I got an email back from Amazon C/S. They are going to phone me tomorrow.

I've been looking through the help forums and sometimes it says to make sure you've got the latest update. I think I've got the latest on mine as it's 3.4.1

message 114: by Grampy (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) That's the latest I'm aware of. At least they contacted you AND are apparently still working on it. That's encouraging.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Yeah, they've been really good. I've done the switch it off and hold for 20 seconds, 40 seconds, switched my router on and off, re-started it I don't know how many times now and it still won't see that it's already connected to the blooming wi-fi.
Must be something I'm missing. Hope they can help me to fix it tomorrow.
I reckon it might be sulking 'cos it knows I've bought a Voyage ;0)

message 116: by Grampy (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) That could be the answer. It wouldn't be the first time!
