As I am Belgian and French speaking, I used to pronounce it like reading a book, but when I met my husband, he tought me the correct way to say it! I must say he was born in Reading! But I believe he read more books up to now than all of us together : he is a bookaholic!
Same idea : I was driving from Dover direction London and was searching the hotel I had booked. I stopped and asked people which was the direction for "green witch", and nobody knew this town! After asking several people, I showed the copy of my reservation, and the person told me : ah, "Grenitch", it's here!
