RE: Alt Eternal PleasureWhat did you think of the writing style? I had a bit of trouble adjusting to it. It seemed... abbreviated?
Casting of Ty, Kelly, the Eleven?
Will you go on to read the other 2 books in the series?
What did you think about the hilarious last love scene where Ty rubs vanilla lotion, in an attempt at foreplay, all over his legs while bent over in front of her naked? Awkward!! I did not find that sexy or appealing at all.. not even in a stripper kind of way.
There was one story, "Optional on the Beach at the Festival of Shug Niggurath" that really didnt seem to relate with the rest of the stories. I know that Nyarlathotep is connected to Mr. Whately somehow but i dont see why this story was added to Cthulhurotica. Maybe I missed something?
For some reason I have a lot of questions for you this week:Which story in Cthulhurotica:
- Scared you the most?
- Did you like the most?
- Was the worst thing you have ever read?
Why can't you swear anymore on the hangout?
Even though Eternal Pleasure is extremely cheesy and bad I feel weird giving it a low star rating because it was entertaining to talk about. I never have highlighted book quotes until this book. Do you women think the Author of this novel could have possibly been taking this book seriously? It is so off the wall crazy.
Quote: "Thou shalt not make love with a dinosaur no matter how sexy he is."
What awesome silly quotes did you find while reading?
You guys should have a (smart and hansom?) male guest one week, just to see what he thinks.
Which story (if any) do you feel might have gone too far past your comfort zone? Were any of the stories not quite out-there enough?
Did you feel the anthology stories stepped away from the prejudices Lovecraft was known for and that were mentioned in the intro?
Karen wrote: "There was one story, "Optional on the Beach at the Festival of Shug Niggurath" that really didnt seem to relate with the rest of the stories. I know that Nyarlathotep is connected to Mr. Whately so..."No, I totally agree. I gave it to my wife to get her response, and she thought it was amusing but not particularly relevant to anything. So there we have a sample size of 3! :P
I was really excited about Eternal Pleasure but just haven't had time to read it this month :( Is it worth keeping it on my to-read list? Or should I forget about it?
Also, getting back on topic -- just a comment about Cthulhurotica. I don't really like short stories, and I was sort of disappointed by a lot of the stories in the anthology, but I did appreciate that there were so many female pairings. I know I'm biased, but it's really a nice change sometimes.
Cthulhurotica:1. Which story most stayed within the style and framework of HPL?
2. Did you think it was important for the short stories to maintain the same style or did they merely need to have some elements of his stories in them?
3. Isn't the mixture of creepy and sexy just end up being way more creepy?
4. Were the stories enjoyable without knowledge of the mythos?
I've been meaning to read HPL for awhile thanks for giving me the motivation. I've read one collection of short stories and have more waiting for me. And I'm playing elder signs!
PS. The Austin group is active and is hosting a watching party for the hangout!
I've already posed this question in the forums but I think it is worth a discussion.Re: Cthulhurotica
Do you consider Cthulhurotica erotica? If so why? If no, why not?
There's an Eternal Pleasure casting thread, that made me wonder -- do you think any of the Cthulhurotica stories would translate into a movie? If yes, which one?
Did you guys read Alan Moore's "Neonomicon" and if you did, what do you think of his original take on whole Cthulhu mythos and role of sexuality in it?
Did any of you read J.R.Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series books? And/or Fallen Angels series in the same universe? Also Molly Harper's Nice Girls series (Jane Jameson) and/or Naked Werewolf series (How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf and The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf)?
If you have, could you comment? Or do you intend to read any of them? :D
Did Cthulhurotica meet your definition of a "Vaginal Fantasy" book, and what IS your definition? It seems like a lot of people think Romance = sex. Do you see the group moving more towards erotic books, away from them, or a mix of everyone's preference?
Why haven't you considered the release of Mists of Pandaria, in your decision to have your livestream at the exact time that it comes out! Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy world!
I managed to read Cthulhurotica whilst (the first fiction book I have made it through to the end in a while) on the beach in Cornwall, enjoying the last of the sun. I have to admit to being a little disappointed. Although I enjoyed nearly all the stories, even if I did think they stopped just as they were getting interesting, but I have to admit that I didn't find them nearly as 'smutty' as I'd hoped.
That's not to say there was no stirring of my loins (whoop!), but maybe I have become a little desensitised to the more classical smut (hmmm classical tentacle smut?).
My question is:
Do you think that, as a whole, people have become far less prudish and shockable thanks mainly to the internet and all of its worldly charms?
Also is this the normal level of smut? Or is there far smuttier smut that you have read in the club or have yet to recommend?
Sorry, I am coming across a little smut hungry. Of course I enjoy a good story with the smuttiness, otherwise it would be just pornography.
If you ladies could shapeshift into any one animal/dinosaur, which one would you pick and why? If you were dating a shapeshifter (whether you were or not), which animal/Dino would you want him/her to be and why? Also, the Canadian live Hangout: Beaver Dreams is going to be Fri Sept 28 at 11pm EST. We're reading/have read another Nina Bangs novel - Wicked Edge.
Ooh! New question - after reading Eternal Pleasure would any of you want to read another Nina Bangs novel?
That was going to be my question too - did some of the stories seem unfinished to you? I felt some of them REALLY needed an extra paragraph, or an extra couple of pages. Some of the endings were far too abrupt. Also, big shoutout to the Edinburgh, UK hangout group! :D we've had one meet so far, but hopefully there'll be many more!
Good idea Christine! The Northern Central Florida group met for lunch this past Sunday. Next month we are meeting up for a local BOOK SALE benefiting Friends of the Library - Alachua County. Proceeds go to a variety of causes relating to keeping the libraries running in Alachua County, FL!
Were there any preconceptions about what you were expecting from Cthulhurotica that you didn't see represented in the story collection, and what was unexpected and surprised you about the stories?
In the final essay in Cthulurotica Justin Everett makes the case that female dominance and subversion of patriarchy are the major themes of Cthulurotica. I am wondering if the whole thing isn't just a metaphor for Felicia's growing influence over the traditionally male dominated geek culture? The correspondence between Felicia and the Cthulhuoid creatures should be obvious
.Reinforcing this however is the Role played by Wil Wheaton in Felicia's series the Guild. Wil's geek cred is inextricably tied up with his masculinity due to his rescue from Wesleydom by his beard.
.Throughout series 3 and 4 Wil's character Fawkes wears a skirt (it's called a kilt but we know what it really is) and is a worthy partner and opponent to Felicia/Cyd/Codex. In series 5 however Fawkes attempts to reclaim the traditional male role by wearing (furry) trousers and becomes a minor character quickly disposed of by Felicia/Cyd.
Enternal pleasure:Did all of you finish it?
What do you normally think about book trailers?
What did you think of this one?
Would you have picked this book as an alt read if you had read it beforehand? Why/why not?
I'll have to second Christine and Mika with their questions.Christine:If you ladies could shapeshift into any one animal/dinosaur, which one would you pick and why? If you were dating a shapeshifter (whether you were or not), which animal/Dino would you want him/her to be and why?
Mika:Would you have picked this book as an alt read if you had read it beforehand? Why/why not?
I'm not sure I understand William's question regarding Cthulurotica and The Guild.
So many props from Bonnie. So impressed!
Weird question: Do the erotic scenes in Vaginal Fantasy novels...umm..."arouse" you? If so, did Cthulurotica do the job?
First, I absolutely loved Cthulhurotica and I am totally telling all of my Call of Cthulu friends to read it. Thanks for the awesome pick Bonnie! My question though is what did you guys think about all of the art in the book and did you think it complimented what you were picturing in your heads?
Is Bonnie on Twitter? I couldn't find her.
Lara wrote: "That was going to be my question too - did some of the stories seem unfinished to you? I felt some of them REALLY needed an extra paragraph, or an extra couple of pages. I've missed my chance for questions and am yet to watch the hangout but I loved the book but I think that some of the stories would have benefited if they were a smidge longer...the first short was just about to get epically creepy and weird and it was definitely cut short!!
