We recently redesigned the homepage to make adding a status update easier! But if it is still unclear, here are some step-by-step instructions.

Note: Feel free to include both general status updates and page number updates in your story. (Maybe one of your characters is reading a book?)

TO POST YOUR FIRST STATUS UPDATE:
IF YOU HAVE ONE OR MORE BOOKS ON YOUR CURRENTLY-READING SHELF:
-click "home"
-select "add a general status update" from the drop-down list under "I'm on page X of" (which is on the right side of the homepage in the "I'm currently reading" box)
-type your story segment
-click the save button

IF YOU HAVE ZERO BOOKS ON YOUR CURRENTLY-READING SHELF:
-click "home"
-click "Add a general status update" (on right side of homepage in "I'm currently reading" box)
-type your story segment
-click the save button

TO POST YOUR SECOND (AND ALL THEREAFTER) STATUS UPDATE:
-click "home"
-click "update status"
-click anywhere inside the text box (the previous post's text will disappear) and type your next story segment. DO NOT click "clear" unless you want to delete (remove from your story) the previous post.
-click the save button

TO VIEW ALL YOUR STATUS UPDATES:
-click "home"
-click the time beside any update (X minutes/hours/days ago)
-click "all [your name:]'s updates (right hand corner)
-Or put your User ID (the number you see in the URL when viewing your own profile) at the end of this URL:
http://www.goodreads.com/user_status/...

TO DELETE STATUS UPDATES
-click "Hi [your name:]" in the upper right hand corner
-on your profile, click the X next to any update in your feed you wish to delete. If you story grows long, please note that you will only be able to delete recent posts, so it might be a good idea to plan your story out in advance, rather than post on the fly and make lots of edits.

Tanja Cilia (Anjta) | 2 comments I would have liked to do it BUT the system is telling me "cannot do it, operation aborted", when I click on "status" and gives a noise like a death knell!
It would be wonderful if we could post the updates in this box, which I have managed to find...

These are not warnings we use on Goodreads, so they must be coming from your computer, not our site. It sounds like actions that require javascript are not working for you. Make sure you have javascript enabled in your browser. Javascript is a browser feature that most sites require for use. Here is a page with a decent description of how to enable
javascript:

Let us know if other technical issues pop up!

David (gojiro) | 4 comments I'm not seeing the stories that have already been posted. All I see are the last status updates. And my own status update test now only shows the last update. Is this actually working? How can we read the stories?

message 5: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 6 comments Got that. But how do we read status updates?

Also, is it okay to post the same story here and on twitter?

Sheila, yes feel free to post on Twitter instead of Goodreads. Please read the special Twitter instructions:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

David, after the final day of the contest I will post easy-access links to all the stories and also create a poll to vote for a winner.

If you'd like to read the stories as they happen, click "add a comment" next to any one status update on the writer's profile. On the right of the next page you will see "all [writer's name:]'s updates."

For example, for writer Gilee Corral, you can see her story here:
http://www.goodreads.com/user_status/...

Hi Ariel: here is your page:
http://www.goodreads.com/user_status/...

Each post is limited to 140 characters. As you type, you will see a number counting down in grey text below the box (for example, 139 characters remaining, and so on). If the countdown turns red, you are out of space (-5 characters).

HELP! I wrote my story according to the guidelines,
but my "I'm currently reading" said, "The Appeal."
This is where I put my Story on the update status.
I CAN'T find my entire post to read, and even according to the directions on how to get to all status updates to read my full entry. After all the work, I need to verify that my story is posted properly to the contest!
Annette

JESSICA:
IS IT ALLOWED to write some alterations to an existing book...just blurbs of what I may have changed or made it more interesting...I don't want to step on any copyright toes...If I don't hear back I'll probably do it, but note at the top anyone who hasn't read the book not to read my "story."
If it is against the rules, just eliminate it!

I want to read my stories via these status update posts, but I've followed the directions above and cannot seem to get to see all my statuses...
Advise Please?
Much Appreciated!
Annette

Betty (nightreader) I can't even find the place to look. I've posted 3 updates but I can't find anywhere to look at them, and I can only see the last one where I've posted them. If it's because I clear the box with each update, I can't help it, every time I click on update after saving the box still contains my last update and when I click to see if anything else is on there it disappears so I put my newest update there. Please, what all am I doing wrong? I used the URL with my ID added and I still can't see where to look.

message 14: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) This is difficult, it's counting each "soft return" as another character. I'm lucky if I can get a whole sentence in each time!

Betty: Here are your updates.
http://www.goodreads.com/user_status/...

For each new update, after clicking "update status," click anywhere inside the text box (the previous post's text will disappear) and type your next story segment. DO NOT click "clear" unless you want to delete (remove from your story) the previous post.

Betty (nightreader) Thanks Jessica, I'm bookmarking that so I don't lose it again. Now I see with all my edits to get text to fit I've missed a very important phrase. I wonder if I'll be able to fix it, right now it looks like I left one of my kids home alone!

message 17: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) Well, my story is done for good or bad. I know there is one repeated sentence and (hopefully) one spelling error. What concerns me is that there is no way to put spacing in. For instance, sometimes my sentences had to be halved into two separate updates, and whereas my story itself has 15 distinct paragraphs, the update does not put any breaks between. This is going to make the story hard to follow as it covers a year.

Assuming I can't fix the missing phrase, "It was the cat! The house is full of smoke!" should have been in between "What was that flying out of the house?", and "Oh my god! how did she get any air,
