I'm probably no help there cuz I'm in a situation almost similar to yours and I've never told him how I feel...no matter how many times we've gone out together. I don't know of it's as just friends or dating. :(

just start asking him about hw stuff (even if u already kno it) and gradually slide into friendzone, stay there for awhile until u guys can hang out together comfortably. once you guys have hung out just u two a few times ask him what he would say if u said u liked him. easy and the LEAST awkward. (still VERY awkwad though, no matter HOW many times u hang out.)
