Lily Bug The movie was so bad it made me want to cry! (Not literaly) They DID change EVERYTHING in the movie. It was utterly HORRIFIC!

message 252: by Lily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lily Bug The books ROCK though!

message 253: by Lily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lily Bug lol the movie made me so mad I watched it over and over just to find all the things they got wrong so I could make fun of/shout at it. By the way, I counted 83, but I'm positive thats not even half.

message 254: by CAPTAINPRICE79 (new)

CAPTAINPRICE79 Well, if you are like me and never read the books, then the movie was really good. I even liked the AvP movie and we all know how many fans were mad at that, and I still like both to this day. Hate me if you want, but I enjoyed the movie from an entertainment perspective and I enjoyed the fight between Saphira and Shruikan(just looked that up to seem like I knew it) at the end. Not knowing the source material helps with liking the movie, regardless of how faithful it is.

message 255: by Sophia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sophia S. The books are WAY better!! Even though everyone told me the movie was bad I wanted to see it for myself. I wish i didn't, it was TERRIBLE! This movie makes me Cringe!! If you have read the books and not seen the movie please don't watch it!!

Sudharman Sitaraman There are three adjectives for the movie: Horrible, Pathetic and Useless. The one good thing about it is that it does not reveal anything about the book itself. I totally hate the fact that by tweaking minor details, they change the story. If they had given the movie a new name and not said that it was based on the book by Paolini, it might have passed off as an original work (although it would still not be exactly a hit).

message 257: by Antonio (new)

Antonio Nevels Ima huge fan of the book Eragon ,but the movie was so bad that I felt like crying. when I first heard about the movie, I made sure to watch it and even included my mother, but just 2 min into the movie I COULD NOT stop commenting on how HORRIBLE and WRONG it was. Like the fact Sapphire goes from a hatch-ling who could barely fly, to a full grown dragon after ONE FLIGHT, just because Eragons palm tingled!! It was outrageous and I had to let my mom watch it alone because I would not stop commenting. She thought it was okay, but she didn't read the book : ).

Colleen Myers I read he was writing another one soon. Anyone know if that is true?

Parinaz When I read the book, I absolutely ADORED IT! When I found out there was a movie, I was intrigued to see how accurate the director made it compared to the book. Later on I watched it, and absolutely HATED it! Not only were many of the events not included, but many of the events that were included were messed up and changed, like Brom's death! This just proves my opinion that books are always better than movies. Who agrees with me?

message 260: by Ruth (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ruth Prophete My friends and I don't even mention the movie anymore it was so bad. The books were amazing and the movie didn't even come close to doing it justice.

Madison Roth I do

message 262: by Dylan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dylan Hamlin He is doing. Sci-fi and then returning to this story with a prequel (Brom) or sequel following another character most likely.

As for the movie. This is why you have to be careful with writers directors. Even Star was last Jedi was trash (IMO) because they used new writers from Disney and a new director not named Jj Abrams.

Gabriel Q. The only people with the ability to enjoy that horrible movie are the ones that haven't read the book

message 264: by Robert (new) - rated it 3 stars

Robert Cooke I think probably everyone. Film was a train wreck and excluded whole characters and story arcs that made ever making a sequel impossible. Would love to see it done again properly but never hold out great hopes when it comes to book to film adaptations.

message 265: by Kaye (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kaye Salter Any else hear about any of the plagiarism in the book series? I know he was just a kid who wrote the books, but it made me loose a lot of respect for him and his parents (who apparently worked for the publishing company that punished his series)

From my comment in this thread of 2015 -

Then there is the thing that the Eragon is a poor retelling of Star Wars:
Eragon v Star Wars
[Old link no longer works]

Everything is pinched. Whole scenes from the Belgariad, story structure from Star Wars, magic system from Le Guin, too much is "borrowed" from Lord of the Rings: Similarities to Tolkien

And here are a few more points for you: Inheritance

But mostly... a book about Dragon's called Eragon? Seriously? That has to be the dumbest title I've ever seen...

message 267: by Robert (new) - rated it 3 stars

Robert Cooke I never noticed it when I read it as a kid, but the comparison to Star Wars is pretty damning really. Still he was 15 when writing Eragon, hardly surprising he lifted bits from his favourite films/books.

Magnus Robert wrote: "I never noticed it when I read it as a kid, but the comparison to Star Wars is pretty damning really. Still he was 15 when writing Eragon, hardly surprising he lifted bits from his favourite films/..."

Every author draws inspiration from different works of film or literature

message 269: by Magnus (new) - rated it 5 stars

Magnus I usually read the book before watching the movie, but I barely got through half an hour before I turned it off to prevent screaming at the screen. The video game of Eragon is not as bad but wasnt really good either.

message 270: by Robert (new) - rated it 3 stars

Robert Cooke I agree, it's hard not to take inspiration from other works. That said the comparison made to star wars in a companion thread to this is a bit too close to the wire. Still, I feel as the series progresses it becomes a lot more it's own beast and moves away from the initial plot comparison.

Books lift things from other books, it happens. I mean if anyone reading Harry Potter can tell me Horcrux's haven't been lifted from Lord of the Rings has got to be joking. People aren't saying that's not an original work.

message 271: by R.S. (new) - rated it 4 stars

R.S. Merritt EVERYBODY.

message 272: by Magnus (new) - rated it 5 stars

Magnus In all honesty I can not see that the comparison of Eragon and Starwars is true. I saw nothing to fit that hypothesis.

myannamarr The movie, Eragon, was absolutely terrible, and din't even cover half the facts in the book. Plus it ended on a cliffhanger the same way the last book did, and they didn't make a sequel!!!!! WHO DOES THAT!!!

message 274: by Emma (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emma Hörberg I think the movie is too short to be a good work of the book. It´s too much missing. Someone agree?

message 275: by Magnus (new) - rated it 5 stars

Magnus I barely made it 30 min in to the movie, and I was about to gauge my eyes out before I quickly turned it off

Folger A.M. Didn't read this book but I seen the movie which was awesome to me.but there is another story out just as good.. Has dragons as well.. Hmm.. Yup. Its on Amazon, title is Galex the shilling tales. By Folger A.M.

message 277: by Asha (new) - rated it 4 stars

Asha I don't think the film was bad, but a film in hardly ever as good as the book, is it? No matter how good the film is, it doesn't matter, because characters will not be the way you picture them and scenes will be altered, deleted or added.

message 278: by Kennie (last edited Apr 23, 2018 09:03PM) (new) - added it

Kennie Fleharty I think the way Saphira looked in the movie was beautiful. I didnt like that she matured in like... 10 seconds. That was stupid. And her voice was too airy for me.

As a teen, I liked the book and the movie for what they were. I was there for the dragons and was amazed that Paolini was my age when he published it and and it inspired me to write. The movie was bad and just seemed like a shallow b rated fantasy movie. Just over all poor story telling. The movie just didnt have the time to hold such a big story.

message 279: by Robert (new) - rated it 1 star

Robert Connor Although I am no great fan of the book, I did read it. However, the film was on network TV here in the UK the other week and I think I lasted about 3 minutes. It was toecurlingly awful. Movie adaptations of young people's fantasy does seem to be very hit and miss in quality—more hit than miss I should say.

message 280: by [deleted user] (new)

The main problem is they left out dwarves, elves, and changed the storyline too much. I could have lived with it if they at least included other races besides Urgals, but the damage was too great. And they got the appearances wrong as well, and Angela was . . . just wrong! But watch the movie anyway, it gives you a slight idea about how good a reboot could be!

message 281: by Shayna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Shayna Cox I am a huge fan of the Eragon books, so last year when I heard that there was an Eragon movie, I was really excited to see the world of Alagaesia come to life on the screen! I'd heard from a friend that the movie was bad, but I brushed it off as a bad opinion.
I was wrong.
It was worse. A LOT worse.
It's literally the WORST NON-SPOOF movie that I have EVER had the MISFORTUNE to see in my ENTIRE LIFE. There's no competition. Seriously, that thing doesn't deserve to be called a real movie. If any of you reading my rant actually LIKED the so-called "movie" (which I seriously doubt if you read all 4 of the books), then I'm sorry, but I'm entitled to my own opinion, so no complaining allowed. But really, only the most basic elements of the story were correct & included in the movie.
If I were Paolini & my book got so atrociously tortured, I'd sue. Probably.

I'm gonna list as many wrong things as I can. For a more official list, go to this unbiased URL address (sorry it's not an actual link):
https://inheritance.fandom.com/wiki/L...

1st, the Characters They Got Wrong:

Roran: Roran in the book was dark-haired, a bit older than Eragon, & madly in love w/ Katrina. In the movie, though, Roran wasn't in love w/ Katrina (cuz she isn't in the movie at all), & he & Eragon looked so alike in age & blonde hair that in the brief time they were shown together, I couldn't tell them apart! It was like they were TWINS instead of cousins!

Katrina: Like I said above, Katrina WASN'T in the movie.

Eragon: Eragon himself wasn't changed much in the movie -other than him getting his brown hair & eyes changed to blonde hair & blue eyes- but his actions WERE. No, wait, movie-Eragon was a LOT MORE STUPID than book-Eragon. & he had bad emotional reactions. He was 15 in the book, but 17 in the movie.

Brom: In the book, Brom was an old man w/ a long white beard, a staff, a dragon-less Rider, & Eragon's dad, as we find in book 3. But in the movie, Brom looked middle-aged, had a short grey beard, & no staff.

Murtagh: In the book, he was definitely a lot more somber, less cheery, a bit older, & less of a go-w/-the-flow guy than he was in the movie. I did like his voice, tho.

Galbatorix: GALBATORIX WASN'T IN THE BOOK, BUT WAS IN THE MOVIE! HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE????!!!!!!

Arya: Arya was 1 of the worst parts in this fiasco of a movie. In the book, Arya has long, raven-BLACK hair, striking slanted GREEN eyes, wears MAN'S clothes (as Paolini calls them, a tunic & breeches/trousers), is STRONG-willed, mentally & physically strong, ISN'T just waiting around for someone to save her, is over 100 years old, & is totally UNINTERESTED in Eragon for the ENTIRE 1st book. In the movie, however, Arya has AUBURN-ish hair, BROWN eyes, wears DRESSES, is weak-willed, neither mentally nor physically strong, is doing NOTHING BUT being a damsel in distress, acts like a TEENAGE HUMAN GIRL in front of Eragon, and is CONSTANTLY flirting w/ him!! In short, acting NOTHING like the brave elf warrior she's supposed to be!!!

Angela: Angela's another disappointment. Her movie-self lacked Angela's spunky, interestingly different, sometimes confusing personality that I love. It felt like Angela's character was someone else entirely, someone I don't like. Plus, she referred to herself in 3rd person, for example: "Would you like Angela to tell your fortune?", or something along those lines. She's not supposed to do that, & it feels wrong.

2nd, the Other Things They Got Wrong or Didn't Include At All:

Age and the general concept of time. The Gedwëy Ignasia. Zar'roc. The Ra'zac. Durza. The Urgals. The cities Therinsford, Yazuac, Teirm, Dauth, and Dras-Leona. Shruikan's size. A whole bunch of spells that Eragon learned in the book but not the movie. That dragon-sight spell, which Eragon uses to see infrared, how Saphira apparently sees things in the movie, was in the book as Saphira pulling Eragon's mind into her body, so he'd see through her literal eyes, & she doesn't see infrared, she just sees blue & green more clearly than red, & it wasn't a spell. Arya's ears aren't pointed, making her look human. Tronjheim's security is dismal at best, & nonexistent at worst. The only thing separating the interior of the hollow mountain from the exterior is a WATERFALL, which would be fine if there was also the cool massive stone doors like in the book (I haven't read Eragon in a while, so forgive me if I got the details of the entrance to Tronjheim a bit wrong).

But you know what kills me? Certain events occurred in the movie that make any other "accurate movies based on the other books" impossible to produce without remaking the current Eragon movie. The main event is this: "If a Rider dies, their dragon dies with them", because that rules out any possibility of Eldunari, Glaedr, Umaroth, the Rider-less dragons, etc.
