Josette, are you a published author?

message 3: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5530 comments Josette wrote: "Should i be? "

Well, sort of. The quotes system on Goodreads is for quotes from books, stories, famous wits, other famous people. Goodreads likes to call them "notable people". It isn't intended for us ordinary people to add their own personal catchphrases and suchlike although I'm sure we all have a few that we could add.

Manuel Vega (manuel_vega) How can i remove or edit my quotes? If i do not have this option, could someone please delete the ones i already put in my page? http://www.goodreads.com/author/quote...
Thank you

message 5: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5530 comments Manuel, I've deleted one quote but the other has a system error on it. It will be deleted when the error clears.

message 6: by Manuel (new)

Manuel Vega (manuel_vega) Thank you Bajomike. Even quotes resist loosing their minute of fame... I'll have to live with my creation as a reminder of its system error.

Yes. The error is still there.

message 8: by Manuel (new)

Manuel Vega (manuel_vega) It's there and in my spelling of your name. Sorry, Banjomike.

message 9: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5530 comments OK. The error has just cleared and the quote has gone.

message 11: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7027 comments Why? Users are entitled to add quotes. If you had added it yourself then that is a different matter but someone else appears to have added it.

If the quote is not from your book or is mis-quoted then we can correct those things

Since it looks like you added them yourself and no one had "liked" them I have removed them. Generally, we don't remove a quote that has been liked unless it doesn't meet the Goodreads criteria.

Kaz (imuzak12) | 30 comments I spelled author's name wrong. Could you delete this quote?
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/732269

One question. When the author's name is spelled in other than Roman alphabet, what is the best way (or default) to add a quote, with his name spelled with Roman alphabet or with original language? "Haruki Murakami" or "村上 春樹"?

If you tell us what the author's name is, we can fix it for you.

The author's name can be listed either way.

Gone. With a Japanese language quote it would make sense to use the Japanese version of his/her name. It could depend upon who you expect to read the quote.

EDIT: I deleted it 'cos only the adder/OP had liked it. A page of Japanese script was a lot to decode. The OP is probably in the best postion to re-add it correctly.

One of them has been liked by someone else, so strictly speaking, No. You can post the correct versions here and both will be fixed.

okay...

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/73264...

“How long were you standing out there?"
"I don't know. Forty-three minutes."
"You must be freezing. And a stalker.”

This quote was supposed to be filed within the title of the book (Wolves, Boys & Other Things That Might Kill Me) not the author but I accidentally hit "save" before I could click the book title.

I wonder why a person who added the quote can't edit it if they made an error or delete it. Strange.

message 42: by Diogenes (new)

Diogenes d'Mayberry | 4 comments Why do we need a librarian to edit/delete our own quotes? Surely that is something the author can control for themselves. Goodreads has some funky polices!

Banjomike | 5530 comments Diogenes wrote: "Why do we need a librarian to edit/delete our own quotes? Surely that is something the author can control for themselves. Goodreads has some funky polices!"

In 99% of cases the person who adds a quote is NOT the author, just someone who likes the quote

Mike (mikewellsauthor) | 8 comments Hi, I have a quote on my author page that is not from me or from any of my books, have no idea where it came from. I don't understand why I don't have the ability to delete it myself when there are so many other more serious things I can change.

Anyway, if someone could delete it for me it would be greatly appreciated.

message 48: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7027 comments Since no one had liked it I have deleted

Only librarians can edit / delete quotes, not even the person who adds the quote can edit for a number of reasons

message 49: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikewellsauthor) | 8 comments Hi, Paula, thanks so much for that.

I want to say again that I think this is a very strange policy on the part of Goodreads. You're telling me that if a person likes a quote that is not by the person's name it's attributed to, it can't be deleted? If someone posts a quote by Stephen King it's attributed to me and someone likes it, for example? Very strange for a company that's dealing with intellectual property and copyright issues on a daily basis. It also can be construed as libel.

I know you didn't create the policy, Paula, and I'm not attacking you--I appreciate what you've done--I just think it's all very odd.

message 50: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 2459 comments Mike wrote: "You're telling me that if a person likes a quote that is not by the person's name it's attributed to, it can't be deleted?"

Not quite.

In this case, since no one had liked the quote it was a no-brainer to delete.

If someone had liked it we would have wanted to make sure it was incorrect before deleting it. It might have been wrongly attributed due to a typo or belonged to another author with the same name, in which case a librarian would have edited it to be attributed to the correct author instead of deleting it outright and the record the user had of liking it.

For what it's worth, librarians are volunteers and deletions are permanent. Librarians who delete things unnecessarily and/or incorrectly risk loosing their editing privileges, so I think we all tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to deletions.
