Some help needed in understanding certain phrases

Can anyone help me understand these phrases, as I cannot seem to get it :

1) ....."But Winfield was still a trifle of a snot-nose, a little of a brooder back of the barn, and an inveterate collector and smoker of snipes.".....

What is meant by : ...."and an inveterate collector and smoker of snipes." ?

2) Tom said, "Don't roust your faith bird-high an' you won't do no crawlin' with the worms."

What does that entire sentence mean ?

1 - A snipe in this context is a partially smoked cigarette, so Winfield would search for discarded cigarettes and smoke them.

2 - Don't set your hopes too high and you won't fall as far when your hopes are dashed.
