There will be a review of this book in Sunday's NY Times. I can supply the link, unless it is considered a spoiler.
Great everybody. Let us know. I fear Bentley might be affected by power outages etc. from Sandy. I am confident we will hear from him soon.
I'm past page 100 and loving this book. I received it in the mail this week and started it immediately. First rate! This my first time to do a book discussion. I'll look to the rest of you to guide me in this. I've had lots of thoughts already.
I'd be pleased to participate in the discussion as a new group member. I've read and agree to abide by theT's and C's.
Tom wrote: "I'd be pleased to participate in the discussion as a new group member. I've read and agree to abide by theT's and C's."Tom, the offer has closed, but check in for the next opportunity. Thanks.
Book received, way down here in Texas. Just had tooth surgery and a car wreck in the same week so I was late in checking the box, but there it was. Will start the read immediately. I cut off my TV so Monday night football is no more.
I just noticed this is an uncorrected proof book, my first. Want to do the read in that light as any errors if found are going to be corrected in the finished book.
I have the book and looking forward to the discussion. Sorry for the late post as I have been out of town.
Here are the lucky recipients of the Jon Meacham book:THE BOOKS ARE ON THEIR WAY!
The discussion will begin on November 19, 2012.
We are asking all of you to check in and/or send me a PM (you all know how to do that now) indicating that you have received your book.
This helps everybody know how soon they should be getting theirs and also lets us know that you have your book in hand and nothing happened to it during mailing. During the last mailing, we did have a couple go astray so we need to know who has recieved the book and hopefully not the case but who has not.

I'm trying to finish the list while Bentely comes back. So, here are the folks we are missing this week:
Jason Page, Michael Blackburn, Logan Beirne, Jason Clearfield, Brad Kalmanson, Frank Morrison, Iris Lagrimas, Marissa, Tere, Cheryl, and Judith
Let me know if you got yours.
Tomerobber, I don't know your name, so I know you got yours. Let me know, so I can cross you off the list.
Had the opportunity to hear Jon Meacham speak and do a book signing yesterday at the best of all places to hear it -- Monticello. Was a great speech with good, direct answers to questions. Can't wait to read the book!

Hi Bryan . . .
I sent Bentley an email that I received my copy on 10/30/12 . . . but I guess he never got it. I also posted to the message earlier as well. Judith

I was part of the giveaway
Marc wrote: "uh, now what? today is the 19th!"Marc, our week 1 thread is open. You can start posting your thoughts.
As is my luck Jon Meacham was in Chattanooga yesterday. To bad our local media said nothing about it till the event was over. I guess I am just out of the loop. I am enjoy the first assignment and will post my thoughts when I finish chapter three. The prologue was very insightful.
I am on a trip cross country to California and took my Jefferson book with me. Just got through the prologue and starting the first chapter. What an awesome book and I am loving this author! Insightful and makes history so easy to read... So excited to be reading this and to have the time to read it as I travel!
Thanks Bryan for digging in....I have been hard hit by Sandy and am just starting to get back on - will not be back in my house for months.
Hope others faired better. And I hope that everyone had a happy thanksgiving.

Thanks for the update, Bentley. I've been thinking about you and wondering how you were faring. So sorry for what you are going through.
Yes, many thanks to Bryan for all the books he has been moderating. Bentley, I have friends going through what you are (storm surge up to the ceiling of the first floor, etc) and I hope the transitions go more easily and more quickly than any of you expect. What a terrible storm this was. I know we are all looking forward to things righting themselves, and to your input again.
Very sorry to hear about the storm damage -- good luck Bentley with your house. I hope you can get things back to normal there as soon as possible. I am just coming out the other side of a bout of the flu, so I too am bit behind where I probably should be -- but I am feeling a lot better and I have started reading Jon Meacham's book. I will be posting about it in the upcoming threads.
I'm also sorry to hear about your troubles, Bentley. I wish you the best of luck.

I know, I saw it too. The notice was on the Chattanoogan.com, but it cost $50 (to have him sign the book) or $100 to be a participant. I don't have that amount of money right now. So I will enjoy him on this site. I just finished the book and it's one of the best I've ever read. Jefferson is so human and someone who I would have loved to have known as a friend. More on that later.
Hi Bentley,I was worried about you, my friend . . . Bryan filled me in. Sorry to hear that you were in the path of Sandy . . . hope you get things settled soon . . . glad to see you are able to post.
Hi all, my building in NYC just reopened post-Sandy and I did not receive the book, unfortunately. It was likely lost in the storm (the mail room is on the first floor). I hope Bentley is alright and everyone had a happy Thanksgiving!
Congratulations to the author on being listed in the 100 Notable Books of 2012 by the New York TImes

Thank you Logan...where have you been relocated. Send me a PM and I will notify Random House. They may be able to send you one considering the circumstances. I am sure that they might.
Send info via PM. Logan, things have been difficult from Sandy but we are digging ourselves out of this mess. Thank you Tomerobber, Donna R, G, Mike, Clayton, Laura, Mark and all of you who have contacted me privately.
ALL, JON MEACHAM HAS LOGGED IN AND IS ANSWERING QUESTIONS ON THE Q&A THREAD. As you are all aware, he is in the middle of his book tour so it is a great opportunity to have him join us.
