Michael Brookes (technohippy) A new drabble (100 word story) written by me has been posted in the Indie Bargains newsletter - visit http://www.indie-book-bargains.co.uk/ to sign up for the daily newsletter of free and bargain Kindle books.

One More Breath

It doesn't matter how tough you are. There will always come the point where your body has no choice but to breathe. Of course you'll swallow a lungful of water. The body will react and attempt to expel the water.

Your thrashing will take on a distinctive frenzy when this happens. Now an amateur would panic and pull you out. But patience, that is the key. Soon you will calm and swallow more water by choice, at peace with your fate.

Only then are you pulled out and learn that you might have accepted your death, but you'll talk anyway.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Goodreads giveaway for 'Conversations in the Abyss' ends tomorrow:

Stealing Lazarus’s miracle gifted him immortality. Combined with his natural ability of invading and controlling people’s minds this made him one of the most dangerous people on Earth.

But the miracle came with a price. His punishment was to be imprisoned within the walls of an ancient monastery and tormented by an invisible fire that burned his body perpetually. To escape the pain he retreated deep into his own mind.

There he discovers the truth of the universe and that only he can stop the coming Apocalypse.

I've posted the latest Elite: Dangerous Fiction Diary, in this video I describe the state of the galaxy at the start of the game. You can amuse yourself watching the video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDurmI...

I've also written a drabble that was included in the update:

An Explorer’s Life by Michael Brookes

Some find it too lonely in the unexplored regions. This far out, you rarely meet other ships. Or not ones you’d want to meet.

It’s not for everyone, but me? I love it.

The solitude, the thrill of finding the trace that leads me to a new dark system. I’m out here forging a trail that others can follow.

My ship might not have the range of the other explorers, but it’s tough. And I have a trader friend that helps me resupply.

But it pays to be careful. There’re darker things than pirates hidden out here amongst the stars.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Welcome to the first drabble for 'Tales of the Imp'. A drabble is a short story that is exactly 100 words, like my other drabbles these are first published in the Indie Book Bargains website (http://www.indie-book-bargains.co.uk/ - which is a great place for readers to discover UK Kindle bargains). Unlike my other drabbles these form a series all about a man and his imp. So without further ado...

Tales of the Imp - Meet the Imp

I have an imp on my shoulder. He's always there, whispering malevolence into my ear. He's three inches tall, with olive skin and two tiny horns on his forehead. His hair is bright red hair. His teeth are small and sharp.

He reeks of burning sulphur, which like him, follows me everywhere.

He says he's here to protect me, that I am someone special. What can such a diminutive creature protect me from? He doesn't answer my questions, but he enjoys telling me things.

Like whom I should kill.

I don't listen to him.

Not yet.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Here's the latest Tales of the Imp drabble, sometimes he's a useful fellow to have around.

Tales of the Imp - Saved by the Imp

It was a tense moment. The drunk towered over me, bits of kebab spluttering from his lips. In a slurred voice he demanded an apology. I had looked at his woman without prior permission.

In a flash the Imp leapt from my shoulder and onto his. The little creature stuck his head in the brute's hairy ear hole.

The next thing I knew, the bruiser had vomited everywhere, all down his front and all over me. He then lurched away in a confused daze.

The grinning Imp hopped back onto my shoulder. For once he smelled better than I did.

The Boss

It took a while for everything to settle down, I counted time’s passing in sleepless nights. The Imp kept me going through those dark days. At every moment I expected the police to knock on my door.

Work was even worse, as you can imagine the boss’ death was the hot topic for weeks. It became a personal hell for me, the guilt of what I had done reflected in the gossip of my colleagues.

The Imp was true to his word though. One month after the involuntary demise a letter arrived from head office congratulating me on my promotion.

Exciting news! My short story 'Forced Entry' from the collection 'An Odd Quartet' has been turned into an audio short thanks to the talented team at The Radio Theatre Workshop (you can find out more about them here: http://www.radiotheatreworkshop.com/).

Assuming all goes to plan then Forced Entry will be available this weekend.

If you can't wait that long (and a few days is a long time to wait!) then grab yourself a copy of 'An Odd Quartet' and read three other great stories as well.

Michael Brookes (technohippy)

Great news! Forced Entry audio short is now available!

Terrorists have seized a suburban dwelling and a special forces unit is despatched to rescue the hostages. They're trained for every conceivable eventuality, but they haven't trained for what they encounter inside the house.

Forced Entry is only £1.99 and can be downloaded from the Radio Theatre Workshop online store:

Beowulf is the latest in my Drabble Classics series where I take classic pieces of literature and recreate them in drabble form. As always the drabbles are posted first in the Indie Book Bargains newsletter (www.indie-book-bargains.co.uk) which is a great place for a daily drabble and the latest Kindle bargains.

I first read Beowulf when I was in school, it's a good example of Saxon epic poetry and is considered one of the earliest examples of classic English Literature.

You can read the rest of the Drabble Classics series here:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/p/d...

And now, let's enjoy this classic tale in drabble form:

Beowulf

Three great battles are sung of Beowulf’s life, the first in the hall of King Hroðgar where the celebrations angered Grendel who slew many warriors within.

Beowulf wrestled the fell creature and tore off the creature’s arm. This caused his second battle, now against Grendel’s mother. They fought in her lair under the lake and with a magic sword he beheaded her.

King Beowulf’s final battle was against a dragon enraged by a theft from its horde. All but loyal Wiglaf abandoned him and together they slew the dragon, but Beowulf was mortally wounded and buried with the cursed treasure.

Mine is: Why is your avatar a Viking?

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I asked an artist I knew to draw a caricature of me many years ago and that was what he came up with. I don't have the long hair anymore though :-)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) An Odd Quartet by Michael Brookes

Today is a good day to pick up your copy of An Odd Quartet, a collection of four dark and strange short stories, it's currently available from Amazon for only 82c (49p for UK readers). Here's what one reviewer thought of this book:

"All of these stories were excellent. I enjoyed the darkly satisfying twists that surfaced in a couple of the tales, and I loved the imagery throughout. I was impressed by how atmospheric the third story really was, even though the entire story is a dialogue exchange of a radio conversation. Don't get me wrong, the other stories were very good but the third one was just brilliant."

We continue the macabre journey through the alphabet with the latest in the ABC Drabbles of Death series. This week we reach the letter 'E' and while it's an obvious choice it was a lot of fun to write! If you haven't read the previous drabbles in the series then you can read them all here:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/p/w...

If you hunger for more short stories or flash fiction then I know just the place - come and join the dediacted Facebook group only a click away:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/short...

And now it's time to see what people are made of...

E is for Eviscerate

These days I prefer to use a hook. I started with a knife and that works fine. Too easy for my taste, I like there to be some skill. A hook takes more effort, a good swing to get it in, and then a yank to pull everything out.

There’s a knack to not nicking the bowels on the way in, not a pleasant smell if you do I can tell you!

The highlight for me is watching them weep and try to stuff everything back in. How it all ever fit inside is a wonder if you ask me.

Michael Brookes (technohippy)

It's a lovely sunny day out there and I've bought a new suit! To celebrate this wonderful day lets take a macabre look at the next letter in our journey through the alphabet. This week's letter is 'G' and it was a tough choice until I remembered a story I was told as a child.

If you've not read the previous drabbles in this series then you can find them all here:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/p/w...

And if you're looking for more flash or short fiction to read then come and join the Facebook group dedicated to these forms:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/short...

G is for Grind

As a boy I lived near a quarry. My best friend and I played there whenever we could. We weren’t supposed to and we got into so much trouble whenever we were caught!

We didn’t stop though. Climbing the huge pile of rock was our favourite game. It wasn’t easy with the stones slipping beneath us, but the view from the summit was worth the effort.

We didn’t know that the mounds were positioned over trap doors; the rocks would pour through and be ground up into gravel.

I never played there again and Paul never played anywhere ever again.

In my youth I developed a talent for reading other people’s minds and with practice, forcing my will upon them. I have never encountered anyone capable of resisting my thoughts and for a time I enjoyed the fruits of my power. A terrible tragedy led me to darker place and then I wielded my ability not simply to satisfy my desires but to torment and judge the throng of humanity around me.

Years passed until I realised that my life lacked meaning and I lived without purpose. It wasn’t a difficult change to make. And with that choice I have one final act to inflict upon the world and they will remember my name with fear for ages to come.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Cult of Me by Michael Brookes

This is the final week of The Cult of Me's half price sale. If you're undecided about reading this supernatural thriller then take a look at some of the comments from Goodreads reviews I've copied below. If they liked it so much then maybe you will too!

"This book is so hard to define. It’s a dark, psychological thriller but also philosophical, metaphysical and totally unusual. " Kath Middleton

"In a nutshell, The Cult of Me is for you if you like characters with a tortured mind and if you like psychological thrillers/conspiracy theories. It deserves its 5 stars because this is the kind of book that I would have read in one sitting, had I been able to. It just drew me in." Frenchie

"It is a real feather in Mr Brookes cap that most writers create a main character that is either a likeable sort or so bad that you can hate them. The main character in this book is ultimately self serving and cynical but even so you still hunt for indicators that he could be redeemed and just occasionally there's a glimmer of possibility, it only lasts for a moment before the author mercilessly dashes it. But, however often your hopes are dashed, you still feel that there may yet be hope." Marie Brown

"Brookes offers an interesting anti-hero with his novel and promises more in the sequel Conversations in the Abyss where the trilogy continues. I liked his narrative voice and the story flowed very smoothly. It'll make a great read for fans of action, suspense and intrigue. " Amanda Lyons

"This is a meaty, lurid read but don't be fooled. The excellent writing and plotting will stay with you long after the book has reached its Apocalyptic conclusion. The anti-hero is totally unlovable, but it seems as if his strange gift enables him to get inside the readers head and mess with it, just as he messes with peoples' heads in the book, often with devastating consequences. " Jayne

Michael Brookes (technohippy) As you can imagine I'm pretty excited with the approaching launch for my next novel - 'Sun Dragon'. To celebrate I've set up a virtual launch event to take place on November 1st and will continue through the day with giveaways and contests. You could win a signed copy of the paperback when it's released or an Amazon gift card, or one of the other wonderful prizes!

The event will start at 10am (UK time) and will continue all day until 9pm. You are more than welcome to bring friends along.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) As well as working hard on the Elite: Dangerous game and the soon to be released Sun Dragon - I've also been writing the tie-in novel for the game. Find out more below:

The mining colony Freeholm in the Artemis system is celebrating ten years of independence. Once a penal colony for political prisoners from the neighbouring planet of Laphria, the station is now a thriving mine and refinery.

The brutal murder of two of the station's resident traders when ambushed in the surrounding asteroid belt sends shockwaves through the community. With the identity of the attackers unknown, Freeholm's head of security and hero of the rebellion, Darik Cavus, must discover the deadly conspiracy unfolding against his home.

They cannot face the threat alone. Darik's daughter, Julia, must travel and find help before the station's small defence force is overwhelmed. The forces moving against the colony seek to prevent her mission.

Events start to spiral out of control for Julia and her small band of allies, and nothing is as it first seems.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Seance A Gothic Tale of Horror and Misfortune by Jack Rollins

Continuing the countdown to the Sun Dragon release on November 1st here's a feature for another one of the books generously donated by other authors. I'e read Jack Rollins' Dr Blessing books and enjoyed them a lot - I'm a big fan of Victorian era horror! I was also fortunate enough to test read The Seance and all I can say is that I'm looking forward to the release. I have my copy pre-ordered!
