Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments LMAO! Love the "Squidward Tentacles" pic, Heather! I'm more than happy if you'd be captain. I was captain for 3 rounds of BSB & the first rounds of CC4 & this year I just don't have the time. THANK YOU for volunteering.

@ Steph: Sorry to hear about the Typhoon. Be safe, my dear friend!

@ Josie: I actually read
A Mermaid's Kiss last & A Witch's Beauty second. You're introduced to Mina in AMK but I wasn't lost at all reading AWB.

I'll be back in a bit with my pick. I forgot Steph's Sunday is my Saturday night.

Amanda A | 812 comments Love the pic! I'm all for you being the captain, Heather!

I've narrowed my choice down to Rises The Night (Gardella Vampire Chronicles, #2) by Colleen Gleason and Shadow City (Horngate Witches, #3) by Diana Pharaoh Francis . I will decide when I finish my current book.

Michelle (michelle_mc) | 2158 comments I will be reading Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews for Kick Ass Heroine (I panicked at first when it was shelved as heroines but I found the singular kick ass heroine on another page).

I think I'm going to read Consumed (Dark Protectors, #4) by Rebecca Zanetti or Crave The Moon (Nightcreature, #11) by Lori Handeland for the free space. That may change though. I'll finish my current book then start on Gunmetal Magic and I'll let you know after that :)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments I've decided to read A Blood Seduction (Vamp City, #1) by Pamela Palmer for Free Space (which I got from the SOS bookshelf).

I'm undecided about my Kick Ass Heroine read. I've narrowed it down to Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson & Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman . Badass dragons or Peter Pan in a pair of tights? Hmmmmm.

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I had Serephina as a choice for almost every shelf in round 5. That book seems to be shelved as everything. Lol.

I think I decided on Easy by Tammara Webber for the kick ass heroine shelf.

Regina, I've got Dustlands #2 TBR, so I'll be interested to see what ya think if you choose that one. Same w/Wolf's Glory. Haven't read the others (series).

LOL! Thanks for the ickless squid pic. Love it! :D

Lethal, I've been wanting to read that one (A Blood Seduction) too. Maybe I'll make it my FS book too. Or, maybe The Immortal Rules. Not sure yet though. SO many books ....

For this week's shelf, I'll be reading:
Biting Cold (Chicagoland Vampires, #6) by Chloe Neill 13 (Women of the Otherworld, #13) by Kelley Armstrong Haunted (Anna Strong Chronicles, #8) by Jeanne C. Stein
Just not sure which one yet; I'll let ya know.

Michelle, I just finished that one. I like Andrea more after reading that book. It wasn't as good as for me (probably b/c Raph instead of Curran), but still a very good read.

Easy by Tammara Webber

This book was exactly what I needed. A perfect escape. The setting is a state university and the main characters are college students. There is some overly dramatic issues happening (rape, really bad history/childhood) but it was presented well and I like how the author dealt with it. The "hero" was damneddddddddd sexy. He makes me want to go back to college. :D There are several exchanges via email and text which are so funny and cute. I loved this story. If you are looking for a sweet romance, with a sexy sexy man that is strong, protective but not abusive or controlling then this is the story for you. Oh and there are really positive female relationships in this book -- such a nice refreshing course.

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Easy sounds like a nice read. I'll keep an eye out for it at the library.

I liked learning more about Andrea, esp now that she's working with Kate. I enjoyed the book, but for me, it felt like Jeaniene Frost's move from more UF to PNR with her NHW spin-off. Did this feel similar in that way to you too?

Looking forward to your review, Michelle.

I have a tendency to buy and start reading books within my favorite series or by my favorite authors without ever reading the cover blurb. I go into a lot of books without ever really knowing what the story will be about other than who the characters are and (if I've read other books in the series) what the world is like. I've run into blurbs that contain serious spoilers, which I hate. So, I figure what's it matter, I know I like the author(s) and want to continue with the series. LOL! Anyway, I'm even more anxious for the next Kate book after getting the little tease of those two in GM.

I'm about 60% into my book for this week's shelf. I chose Haunted (Anna Strong Chronicles, #8) by Jeanne C. Stein . I want to finish it today, but gotta get to class. I'll be finished by tonight and drop a review tomorrow.

message 68: by Heather ~ Marceline (last edited Sep 17, 2012 07:29PM) (new)

Heather ~ Marceline | 1017 comments I finished Kiss of Snow (Psy-Changeling, #10) by Nalini Singh on 9/16 and give it 4.5 stars. I finished this book in bed last night and had trouble trying to go to sleep after. I LOVED this book! Throughout the series I have gone back and forth on my feelings about Hawke, but mostly I have liked him and his playfullness with Sascha. Sienna on the other hand, I felt like I never got to know her much. Then this book started and Sienna had this big horrible Psy power that had never been elaborated on too much before and it didn't look good. I found parts of the book frustrating, otherwise it would have had 5 stars. Hawke bringing in the other woman to help with his frustrations was especially irritating. The side story of Walker and Lara was also enjoyable. I was wondering how all three Lauren family adults being involved with SnowDancers would affect the LaurenNet, so that added and interesting devlopment to their story. I definitely enjoy the books with shifters involved along with the psy rather than the psy only stories.

Heather ~ Marceline | 1017 comments I will be reading Bound to Shadows (Riley Jenson Guardian, #8) by Keri Arthur for my free space read from the SOS bookshelf.

Michelle (michelle_mc) | 2158 comments Kick-ass Heroine
Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews Read 17/9/12 4★

When we first met Andrea in the Kate Daniels books I found it really hard to form an opinion of her, I liked her to an extent but I wasn't really attached to her, now after getting to know her better and spending time with her as the main focus I really like her!

I feel like Andrea grew up a little through this journey and it was something she had to do if she wanted a life with Raphael. Which brings me to Raphael... Where oh where do you start with him? He has p*ssed me off through the series and that continued into the beginning of this book, especially their first meeting. If ever I wanted to slap someone silly, that would do it!

The little teasers with Kate & Curran made me hungry for their next book. I love Curran, he dominates the page whenever he is around even just for a sentence or two. I miss him.

I loved the interactions with Kate & Andrea and I liked Aunt B in this one.

(view spoiler)

Michelle (michelle_mc) | 2158 comments Free Space Shelf (chosen from Group Bookshelf)

Consumed (Dark Protectors, #4) by Rebecca Zanetti Read 18/9/12 5★

I was a little confused in the beginning, it starts with Katie & Jordan's first meeting when she was 4years old and then jumps to the present day. The present day however is 10yrs after the end of the previous book. I must admit I felt a little cheated innitially but Rebecca soon won me over.

Katie is the type of heroine I adore, she fights for what she believes in, for what she wants. Giving everything she has for the slightest chance of hapinness at the end. You have to admire her especially since Jordan can be an ass when it comes to their relationship or lack there of.

I love the world Rebecca has created it's easy to follow, the characters are intriguing, the bad guys are evil and everyone is constantly evolving. Lots of action in this one and although the main focus was on the Shifters, the Werewolves, Vampires & Kurjan's were all envolved.

Poor Jase...

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Haunted (Anna Strong Chronicles, #8)
Haunted by Jeanne C. Stein

Series: Anna Strong #8
Rating: 3.5-4 of 5 stars
Shelf: 'kick-ass-heroine'
Read: 18 September
Review:
In Haunted, Anna learns about Culebra's past and how he and Max met. Culebra has been an intriguing character throughout the series and it was nice to learn who he was and what he did before owning Beso de la Muerte, a bar in a cave in Mexico.

Feeling lonely on Christmas Eve, Anna heads to her favorite Mexican hangout. There she finds Culebra and Max knocking back drinks at the bar. When someone from Culebra's turns up seeking help, he cannot refuse. He believes he's repaying a debt, but his "friend" has something very different in mind. Thankfully, Max and Anna tag along.

This story is quite different from the previous books in the series. The storyline offers readers a mix of real-life cartel nightmares* and urban-fantasy style payback. If only the people suffering in Mexico (and other countries around the world) had vampires and shapeshifters to save the day.

{*Drugs, guns and sex slave ring involvement. Kidnapping and rape take place, however no detailed descriptions of the rape exist.}

With this type of storyline, it's easy to understand why this book didn't focus mainly on Anna. I really enjoyed getting to know Culebra a bit better and more interaction with Max, Anna's ex-beau and DEA agent. But, I'm anxious to see what happens in book 9 now that she seems to have made a big relationship decision.

Up until the last 3/4 of the book, I would've rated this a solid 3-★, but had to bump it up following an emotional scene.

Heather ~ Marceline | 1017 comments @ Regina - I am SO sorry, I knew you did, but I was also messing with the html for the first time posting the link so I was very flustered when I was posting your review, so please forgive me :D I was trying to do it with help from my hubby, an old post of Steph's I found in a search and not have to ask the group for help if I could avoid it. It is a sickness of mine, trying to figure out stuff on the computer with as little help as possible.

ETA: I should add, it wasn't cause I didn't want anyone's help, it is just stubborness, trying to figure it out, to be able to say "I did that!"

@ Steph - since you said 3.5-4 I decided to round up :D Hope that works for you!

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments UGH! I am hating my FS read. The world is as deliciously creepy as I've heard but the heroine, Quinn, is getting on my last damn nerve. From the beginning, she's been panting & moaning over the bad guy-& when I say bad, I mean BAD. He's only slightly less evil than the other bad guys but that's still a shitload of evil. It's gotten to the point where I'm smacking my Kindle while imagining it's the back of Quinn's head.

Steph, I almost picked Girl of Nightmares for this week's shelf. Can't wait to hear what you think of it. I really liked the first book too.

Sorry about your book, Lethal. Hope it gets better for you. I have to admit that I find your status updates for this book hilarious! :-)

Heather ~ Marceline | 1017 comments So, I officially rely too much on electronics. Apparently, at some point I read Bound to Shadows, and forgot to update my Goodreads status. So, though I was smart enough to go out to the digital site of my local library and check out Moon Sworn (Riley Jenson Guardian, #9) by Keri Arthur , I was neither smart enough to realize that was what I was reading because you never look at bookcovers with your kindle(I just saw the Riley Jenson part of the title and thought "There it is!"), and since Goodreads was telling me Bound to Shadows was my next book to read in the series, of course that was right. I am off to hang my head in shame in the corner while I ponder what to write for my review.....

Heather ~ Marceline | 1017 comments I finished my free space read... Moon Sworn, on 9/19 and give it 4.5 stars. As stated above, I had absolutely no idea I was reading the final book in the series, really this was an all new low for me. I love my kindle, adore the ease of carrying it around with me and the anonymity of some of my more crazy covers that my books have, but I have to say there is a serious drawback with rarely seeing your book title :D

Reading this, not knowing it was the final book, makes it interesting to look back on. In ways I love how she wrapped up the series. In others, I feel it left us hanging. I have already put in a request for the spin-off series at the library, but I know it takes place years in the future so I am waiting to see what it is like.

The main plot to this story had an interesting take on it, revenge killing for hires of ex-cons recently released from prison. Riley then is also kidnapped and has her memory erased, all she can remember is a voice telling her that this is her last week on earth. As she starts to solve a murder that ends up being part of the above case, her memories start to return and what really matters to her in life becomes more and more clear as the book comes to an end. There was good wrap up of several of the storylines that existed throughout the books. I know I'm not the pickiest reader, but I really enjoyed this entire series. I loved Rhoan and Liander, and even got to the point that I liked Quinn quite a bit. Riley isn't my favorite lead female, but I really enjoyed her.

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments LOL! I've done that too. Glad you enjoyed the finale. I miss that series. I loved the vamp/wolf combo. I've read the first book in her Dark Angels series w/Risa. I like it, but I don't love it like I did Riley. I have #2-3 on-hand TBR, maybe it'll get better for me as I move on w/them.

How's that series, Amanda? I have many of the books, but haven't started the series yet.

I'm about 1/2 thru Girl of Nightmares and it's not as beautifully spooky as the first, but not bad. The boys are off to London and I'm anxious to see how that plays out.
