Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments Oohh... it's that good? Then I've decided:

My book for the Free Space shelf is: Some Girls Bite using option (3) A book off of the group's bookshelf: Any shelf or tag; No date restriction - books added at anytime may be chosen

It's on the vampire, first in a series, witches-magic shelves.

Heather (Heatso) (hyperweather) | 68 comments Eck! Now I really want to read it! I swear it was like $4 on kindle a few months ago, I should have gotten it then. I think I'm going to go with Angelfall for this category (since I could get it free from amazon prime lending library), and maybe try to find it at my library for another one.

I think I'm going to read Slumber (The Fade, #1) by Samantha Young for the free space, its on the young-adult shelf.

Lina I'm not sure how this works as far as bundles go?
I have The Study Series Bundle (Study, #1-3) by Maria V. Snyder as an ebook, but I'd like to just read the first story Poison Study from that bundle. Would this still count as one book? Or would I have to read the whole thing as with anthologies?

message 54: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments I'm pretty sure you can just read the first one and it would count. It's over 200 pages and is on the list as a separate book.

message 55: by Lina (new)

Lina Cool! Thanks Kate :-)

message 56: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25913 comments Definitely read just the one, in Study series case they are all more than 200 pages.

message 57: by Lina (new)

Lina :-D Thanks Sandra!

Alyssa may I make a recommendation :) I just finished reading Obsidian and Onyx by Jennifer Armentrout and Loved them both, it's a fantastic series :)

message 59: by Diane ~Firefly~ (last edited Sep 16, 2012 07:40PM) (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I finished my Kick-Ass Heroine shelf today (9/16) and gave it 3 stars.

Review:
Another good book in a great, and long series. This time Eve and Peabody are looking for dirty cops. You are told who the bad guys are pretty close to the beginning so most of the book is about how to prove it. Eve takes a look at what it means to command/lead. I would have liked a little more pay off at the end.

Treachery in Death (In Death, #32) by J.D. Robb

message 60: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments That's a series that I'm always debating whether or not I should start it or not. It looks really good.

But then I always get intimidated by just how many books there are... Once I start a series I usually feel compelled to finish it.

message 61: by Lina (new)

Lina I've read the first three of the In Death series, and I like them... but I don't love them like everyone else seems to. And I'm the same way, Kate, so it bothers me that it feels like hard work to keep going with them sometimes.

message 62: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I'm the same...like it but no undying love. I've started it, but going slowly~now up to book 3, LOL! Hopefully will catch up before I kick the bucket, but not too worried about it either way!

message 63: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25913 comments I get my In Death's from the library, so I've read all out of order, which hasn't stopped my enjoyment of the series, read just over half of them. Now going back and reserving the ones I've missed, but definitely don't feel any pressure. Just think of them as you would a homicide TV cop show.

message 64: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Galloway | 140 comments I'm going to read Poison Study Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder for this shelf.

message 65: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments Week 1: Kick-ass Heroine

Book: Frostbite by Richelle Mead
Frostbite (Vampire Academy, #2) by Richelle Mead
Rating: ★★★★
Finished: 18th September, 2012
Review:I loved the first one book in the series and this was a great follow-up. Rose is just as feisty and strong. Lissa's entertaining and I liked the development of her powers, her relationship with Christian and her accepting her position amongst the Moroi as the representative for the Dragomir Royal Family.

This book is a lot more concerned with the politics of the race as well as their evil enemy, the Strigoi, with less attention paid to the dynamics of high school. I liked how the series is progressing and I can't wait to read the third book however I missed Rose interacting with the rest of the students at St. Vladimir's.

In terms of action - this book had a lot. There was a lot of violence, murder and a fantastic fight scene towards the end of the book that near broke my heart. I loved the new characters of Tasha and Adrian who were introduced and I can't wait to read the next book to see what we find out next - about the world of the Vampires and about just what happens next in Rose's life romantically.

message 67: by Alyssa (last edited Sep 18, 2012 11:15PM) (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments Thanks for the recommendation, Kat!

I ended up picking River Marked (Mercedes Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs for the Kick-Ass Heroine shelf.

I'm definitely gonna try to get to Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout some time soon though.

I have no idea what I'm going to pick for my Free Space book yet, but I'll figure it out soon.

message 68: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments Soo.... I think I've caught most of what everyone has said they're planning on reading so far. Check it out for me HERE.

I think one I was confused on was CaroB. Are you reading Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder ? And if yes, is it for the Free Space or Kick-Ass Heroine shelf?

message 69: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments That's right with respect to my books, Alyssa :)

Now I just need to wait for the postman to deliver Some Girls Bite...

message 70: by Lina (new)

Lina I'm reading Poison Study for this week's shelf, Alyssa. I'm still ummm-ing and ahhh-ing over the Free Space but I hope to have it knocked over by middle of next week :-)

I'm reading Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, #4) by Chloe Neill for the free space. :)

Oh yeah, I meant to say something yesterday. While Kate did an awesome job knocking out her Kick-Ass Heroine book, Diane was actually the first one to read her book. She finished it like the same day as the shelf announcement! (I'm sorry, Diane, we must have missed it because others were still picking their books. You just finished soo fast!)

Anyways, great job to both Diane and Kate for reading super fast. Enjoy your Free Space books!

If you decide to change your book for whatever reason, no worries. Just let me know. I've done it too. Picked one right away and then found something better later.

I'm just checking on you all. I'm about half way through my kick-ass read. Hope to be done maybe tomorrow evening. (For once I don't have to work at 3:30AM on Sunday morning!! Party!!)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I finished my free space (it is on the group's bookshelf) read today (9/22) and gave it 3 stars. Here's hoping for a shelf call today with Drink Deep on it because there better be some payoff.

Review:Well that was certainly some ending. (view spoiler). I like this series. I like that Merit tries to do what is best for her house and city, not necessarily what is best for her or the GP. I like the group she has around her, they all bring something to the table even in books where they stay mostly in the background. I'm not fond of the fact that every hot guy/supernatural seems to fall for Merit, but that is fairly common in UF. I like the bits of Chicago that come out in the books, like the food in this one. It will be interesting to see how human/vampire relations play out in the future.

Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, #4) by Chloe Neill

message 81: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments Yay, Diane! You're kicking all of our butts! I still haven't even picked a Free Space read....

Almost new shelf time. I think there's probably a pretty good chance you'll get a shelf that has Drink Deep (Chicagoland Vampires, #5) by Chloe Neill on it, Diane. I think that series is on a lot of shelves. Unless we get one of those wild card shelves where you have to pick a New2You author or the First in Series book.

message 82: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments *drumroll* And the new shelf is...... Favorite Author. (This is a personal shelf. Any book (200+ pgs) written by one of your favorite authors is allowed. Please let us know if you have any questions.)

message 83: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments This shelf is always tough for me. I'm usually fairly caught up on my favorite authors, and unfortunately, Chloe Neill and Drink Deep don't qualify. I'm thinking of reading either Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews or By a Thread (Elemental Assassin, #6) by Jennifer Estep . Any recommendations?

message 84: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25913 comments I loved them both Diane, in fact I'm re-reading Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews for my read this shelf.

message 85: by Lina (new)

Lina I''ve finished Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder for the Kick-ass Heroine shelf. I'll post my review shortly.
I'll be reading Magic Study (Study, #2) by Maria V. Snyder for my Free Space read and I'll be reading something from Kristen Ashley for this week's shelf. Probably Creed (Unfinished Hero, #2) by Kristen Ashley

Hmmm, if it is worth a re-read so quickly, it must be good...

message 87: by Heather (Heatso) (last edited Sep 22, 2012 07:23PM) (new)

Heather (Heatso) (hyperweather) | 68 comments I know that PNR and UF are encouraged but I happen to have some library books of some of my fav authors right now so would Hide and Seek or Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim be ok? Or does it need to still have a paranormal theme?

If not no biggie, I have tons of other books to choose from :)

message 88: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25913 comments Read whatever you fancy Heather, PNR/UF is encouraged just so others can add more to their TBR.

The shelf is favorite author and that is the only criteria, apart from the 200 minimum page limit.

message 89: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments I always find personal shelves harder to choose a book than the other ones...

I'll have to give this one some thought. Most of my favourite authors I have read all the books that have out because I can't help but read them the week they're released.

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments I'm jealous of those of you who are reading Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews .... Wish I had it, cuz I've been missing that world since I finished Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews a few months ago. *whines* Now I have to hunt around for something.... Too many to choose from....

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments I finished my Kick-Ass book, but I'm too tired to right <---- (I couldn't even spell write right....) a review that doesn't solely consist of me squealing like a little girl about how much I loved River Marked (Mercedes Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs . Somehow I don't think just saying "Squeeeeeeeeee!!!!!" counts as a review. (I don't need any ninjas with whips coming after me.) Lol.

message 93: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments Oh Alyssa... I know exactly how you feel :P

I often mind myself having to restrain my inner fangirl to keep from my reviews just being squeals of excitement when I finish reading books that I loved that much!

Glad you enjoyed Mercy!

message 94: by Alyssa (last edited Sep 23, 2012 01:37PM) (new)

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments I finished River Marked (Mercedes Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs for the Kick-Ass Heroine shelf on 9/22/12.

Rating: ★★★★★ + ♥♥♥♥♥

Review: I loved it. I think even more than the others before it.... I read the whole second half of it in one sitting last night. It was just.... fantastic.

Adam and Mercy just made me go "Aww...." like the whole time.

It was cool to get some concrete information about Mercy's background. I thought all the new characters were pretty awesome.

Now, I'm all sad, cuz I wish there was another out that I could read. I'm definitely going to be pre-ordering the next one. Can't wait.

Squeeeee!!!! (I just had to squeal once....) :-D

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments And we're updated.

We've halfway earned our Kick-Ass Heroine stamp.

I didn't fill in anyone's choices for Favorite Author, because it seemed like you all were choosing between a couple of good books. So, I'll fill it in later.

I'm off to start on Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout .

message 96: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Galloway | 140 comments I finished Poison Study for my Kick-Ass Heroine 9/21/12. A friend had recommended it and she was right. I loved it!! 5 stars! Wonderful strong female lead character with a great supporting cast. I don't like the whole deal with the commander, especially the way she pays back the great favor Yelena does for her. Can't wait to read the next book after the way things ended.

Lina Shelf 1: KICK-ASS HEROINE

Book: Poison Study, read from
The Study Series Bundle (Study, #1-3) by Maria V. Snyder

Rating: ★★★★
Finished: 21st September, 2012
Review: I must admit I'm not usually a fan of Young-Adult fiction, but having heard so many things about this series, I was curious to read it and this shelf gave me the perfect excuse to begin with the first book. What I found was a well-woven world of courtly intrigue, an intelligent but tortured heroine who is finding her strengths and her place in her new life, and an unexpected romance. The writing was great, the plot sucked me in and left me wanting to read further. I went straight into Assassin Study, and plan on starting Magic Study this week. As is often the case with a good book, I was left thinking, "Why didn't I read this sooner?"

message 98: by Lina (new)

Lina Shelf 2: FAVOURITE AUTHOR

Book: Creed
Creed (Unfinished Hero, #2) by Kristen Ashley

Rating: ★★★
Finished: 24th September, 2012
Review: This was a 3.5 stars read for me, from an author who is usually a solid 4 star read. It's not that I didn't like the book. I did. Let's face it, Kristen Ashley even on a bad day knows how to weave a good yarn with some ass kicking of bad guys and some steamy sex scenes to boot :-) But it was less than I was hoping for.

I loved Sylvie's character. She. kicked. ass. And it's so novel to see a female lead in a Kristen Ashley book (apart from Jules in Rock Chick Renegade), who can lead. Who can be tough, who smokes, who can separate her heart from her body and who swears. Because she is meant to be a badass, through her job and through her own perceptions of herself, so for me, it worked. I found it refreshing to see a heroine who wasn't a cookie-cutter version of every other and whose history completely explained why she had become the way she was.

What disappointed me was that the plot (except for the backstory) and the hero seemed so much like others in the K.A. lineup... Don't get me wrong, there's an element of "if it aint broke don't fix it" going on here, because I have to say K.A.'s heroes are smokin' hot! But I felt that in trying to get these two characters together, they changed from the tough bad-ass H/h we meet at the beginning of the book into something too mushy. I loved the angst, loved the backstory, loved the characters at the beginning of the book. But when I finished, I was left flat and wondering if K.A. has started writing from a formula. I hope not.
