Reflection Ch. 1

Based on the first chapter I read, Tom is a handful. He is sneaky and doesn't like to listen to the rules. His mom died and so he lives with his aunt. But, his aunt is scared to lash him because her heart breaks every time she does. But she knows she needs to to keep him under control. Tom picks a fight with a kid that was wearing fancy clothes and beat him up.

I don't think it was so much Tom picking a fight but two boys, strangers, meet and they must decide who is top dog. Twain describes the same phenomena in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. When two or more knights meet they must try to beat each other even unto death. In this case Tom triumphs.
